An organization’s mission statement communicates the purpose and values to not only the customer but also to the employees. A mission statement should not be confused with a vision statement. A mission statement is clear and concise, clearly stating who and what is important along with the direction of the organization. On the other hand, a vision statement communicates what needs to be done to achieve the mission statement. Furthermore, a mission statement should be brief, concise, and easily recitable by all employees (S. M. Coleman, personal communication, March 11, 2017). The reader is quickly lost in all of the detail in the statement leaving them with no sense of direction or empowerment. The statement has the necessary content to be a quality mission statement if the current version is shortened.
The mission statement is more of a combination of a mission and vision statement because of the length and detail provided. Perhaps, making the statement concise and read something like: “CitizenKARE- Placing citizens first through Knowledge, Attitude, Respect, and Excellence in all we do.” This version is clear, concise, memorable and inspiring ("Topnonprofit," n.d.) while providing a purpose for the existence of the fire department.
The mission statement of an organization should clearly communicate the purpose and values of the organization. The statement should be clear, concise and memorable by every member of the organization, providing inspiration and direction. Failing to create an effect mission statement will distract employees and leave the customer unclear about the purpose of the organization.
