As a mother and wife, I'm always looking to save time and money. I can sometimes achieve that by choosing to shop at our local Dollar General. Because I am a frequent customer of their company, I was interested in learning what their mission statement contained and whether or not they did a good job relaying that message in their “About Me” section of the company website. Here are my findings... I feel as though Dollar General Corporation has a fairly vague mission statement. It simply states “Serving others, For customers a better life, For shareholders a superior return, For employees respect and opportunity.” [missionstatements.com] However, as vague as it may be, it does address all of the concerns and priorities that they share in their “About Me” section of their website. …show more content…
The very first line of their “about us” page does address their mission to provide their customers with a “better life” by way of providing the customers with low-cost products for the last 75 years.
It also mentions that on top of the cheaper, but still of good quality, private brands, they offer customers widely known and popular products from manufactures such as Clorox, Nestle, and General Mills. I think that is a good representation of how they are trying to improve the lives of their customers. Right under the website's “About Us” drop down are 4 other tabs. They're headers are Profile and Mission of DG, Historical Milestones, Store Maps and Locations, and Serving Others. Aside from the store locator, I found these to contain other elements that were mentioned in their mission
statement. Under the Historical Milestones tab, a person is able to take a trip down memory lane and learn about the company from the very beginning all the way until the present. In this section, there is ample mention of early investors and their impact on the continued success of Dollar General Corporation. The 2 men who started the company both invested $5000 (back in 1939). The company did not open it's first Dollar General Store until 1955. It goes on to talk about shareholders and how much shares cost back in 1968. Then there was mention of how Dollar General started selling greeting cards, two for $1, buy the owner searching for and finding a partner willing to work with them to offer the cards at such a lower price than other stores. They also speak about the growth of the company in terms of warehouses that were built and the buyout of Eagle Family Discount stores, allowing them to open 206 new Dollar Generals in their place. Onto the subject of Dollar General Corporation's mission to serve the community by helping others. The website offers a thorough look at how the company is trying to offer assistance to others through good deeds. First, back in 1987, the company started it's very own reading program designed to help those that are illiterate learn to read and also help people study for and pass a high school equivalency test. They took it a step further, “Since 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded nonprofit organizations and schools more than $85 million in grants, helping more than 4.8 million people learn to read, get their GED or learn the English language.” [dollargeneral.com] During the holiday season, Dollar General sets up donation boxes to collect gifts for the Toys For Tots foundation and also Angel Tree's to help out the Salvation Army give people in need a little surprise during the holiday season. To add to all of their generosity, in 2006 Dollar General became partners with Saint Jude Children's Hospital to raise money for children that are fighting cancer. The list for all of their donations, contributions, and community services seems to go on forever. I am extremely impressed by this and happy to know that I give my business to such a kind company. Lastly, the mission statement states that Dollar General Corporation strives to provide their employees with respect and opportunity. The company touches on this subject several times within their “About Me” section of their web page. Back in 1989 the company had more than 7,000 employees. Dollar General also prides itself on supporting veterans with job opportunities and their “Paycheck to Patriots” program. I've never heard of a company choosing their employees as their advertisement models, but that is another opportunity that has been offered to their employees. In 2013, Dollar General opened their 11,000th store!!! They are supplying jobs and careers all over the country. With employees commenting that they receive “training, continued coaching, and honest feedback,” it appears as though the organization is hitting the goals that they set out to achieve and strive for when catering to their employees. My analysis is that though there could have been more thought put into a better detailed mission statement, that Dollar General Corporation really goes into depth to prove how they are sucessfully obtaining the mission that they created. The “About Me” tab of their website offers a more comprehensive breakdown of their mission statement, and nothing was left out.
GEICO has a multi-dimensional mission statement, that encompasses the core values/beliefs that the company wants to represent itself to the general public and especially, to customers. GEICO’s seven operating principles help define the unique corporate culture and have been the basis for some of the company’s greatest achievements. The first operating principle centers around the notion of respect: to respect, support, and provide opportunity for its associates. The second operating principles centers around service and to be fanatics for outstanding customer service. The third principle is focused on low-cost.
This allows them to purchase high volume for a lower cost. Bringing over 20,000 products into one convenient location and with over 450 brands they provide a large selection.
An article discussing the importance of a mission statement states that a mission statements’ job is to outline the organization’s unique purpose and establish the basis of its values and traits, as well as describe the attitude that is to be expected of those a part of the organization. Furthermore, this philosophical foundation sets the “tone” for physical actions, meaning that the content of the mission statement can determine the behavior of personnel (Hitt & Ireland, 1992).
Because Dollar General does not sell in bulk, they tailor their supply chain to focus on more frequent deliveries of goods to smaller stores. Although this creates some inefficiencies relative to their big box rivals who were able to ship larger truckloads to their stores, Dollar General benefits from a denser network of stores in many areas as they had more than twice as many US locations (11,061) as Wal-Mart (4,807) in 2013. Additionally, Dollar General owns all trailers moving to and from distribution centers, but subcontracts trucking [dollar general 10K]. This reduces their necessary capital investment, while retaining key distribution activities including control of the loading, unloading and delivery scheduling of products to both retail stores and distribution centers.
The company had to be the second largest retailer shop in the US; it has many advantages that come along. The customers well acknowledge the company and its brand have been well established.
A mission statement is a powerful message that companies or organizations set to be the focus and reason behind why or how they manage things. They are used to help their potential members, employees, or buyers understand their passion. It is of great importance that the mission statement is upheld or it becomes ineffective. These statements are written differently, but they are used for the common objective. The mission statement at Spring Hill College is a well written statement that uses effective style, has a clear focus, and can be interpreted by a varying audience.
