Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, published in 1954 is a book detailing the challenge of civilization versus savagery. The book is written in third person, with focus on the main character Ralph. Taking place on the deserted island in which they crashed, the boys begin to fight between civilization or savagery. Ralph, and his foil character Jack repeatedly find matters to fight over, leadership, course of action, safety. Ralph wants to focus on returning home, keeping the fire lit; Jack on the other hand wants to be leader, and continues to challenge Ralphs ways and authority, his plight to do so eventually turns all the boys against Ralph, killing many other boys, such as Piggy and Simon. In the end, Ralph is rescued by an officer who spotted the forest fire meant to draw Ralph out right into the hands of the the savages. Written following World War Two, this novel details how horrible mankind can be with a heartbroken tone.

In his adventures, Jack doesn’t realize that not all the boys want to be savages. Ralph is safe; he will protect the boys. Jack’s actions; especially calling the boys away for a hunt; instead of tending to the fire cost the boys their passage home as they were unable to get the ship's attention. Even with his desperate obsession with the beast, Jack is sending the younger children, or “little ‘uns” to Ralphs safe rule. His hunt for the beast makes it more real, thus making the children more scared of an unknown animal. Lastly; Jack’s attempt to kill Ralph with the fire actually sends Ralph and some of the other children home. With him burning down most of the forest, a passing ship comes by and rescues those not in the forest, giving Ralph his final revenge, he calls himself the leader and says he doesn’t know who else is on the
