Who plays the most pivotal role in the Lord of the Flies? The Lord of the Flies contains many interesting characters from the cruel Roger to the curious Simon. The interaction between these characters determine the plot with some characters influencing the story more than others. Ralph has influenced the story greatly because of his personality trait, group relations, and the underlying reasons for his group relations. . Ralph contains many traits that optimized him for fair and just leadership while also having other distasteful qualities. One of his most defining attribute is his intelligence, for example, “We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us-”(16). He quickly determined that the conch can be used to rally the others show his quick mind. Another one of his traits is his courage, for example, “I’m chief. I’ll go”(104). An undesirable characteristic is his poor treatment of other which can be see when he called Piggy’s character piggy and making fun of Piggy’s asthma by calling it “ass-mar”(9). The littluns supported him in the beginning but became disinterested in him. As the story progresses, the children grow tire of his orders and turn to Jack for fun and excitement. Eventually, his only supporters left are Sam, Eric, and Piggy. Ralph becomes defenseless against Jack’s claim to leader the island. In Jack’s words regarding him, ”He isn’t a proper chief ”(126).
