Arthur Miller created numerous characters for The Crucible, each with their own personalities. Some characters like Abigail Williams and Reverend Parris are greedy and selfish; however, other characters like Rebecca Nurse are saintly and innocent. Some characters are dynamic characters like John Proctor and Reverend Hale that undergo changes throughout the play. Mary Warren has been portrayed as an innocent girl from the minute she was introduced into the play, but is she really this innocent girl that everyone portrays her to be? Mary Warren has a pliable nature, meaning she is very moldable, and Abigail used this to her advantage. When Abigail uses this, Mary Warren gets wrapped up in this hysteria with the rest of the girls that are “afflicted”. Mary cannot see the events occurring right before her eyes. This allows the audience to feel sympathetic for her, because of her obvious vulnerability. Mary is extremely frightened of confessing about the witchcraft and how the whole thing was made up by Abigail. On page 1244 Mary Warren is trying to get Abigail to confess about the witchcraft hoax but Abigail takes advantage of the pliable nature and persuades Mary do things that she doesn’t want to. She took pleasure in the power when she accused people of witchcraft, but she soon felt bad to see innocent people condemned. Mary has a guilty conscience when Elizabeth Proctor is accused of witchcraft by Abigail because of the poppet that Mary had made Elizabeth, on page 1283. This proves that that Mary felt guilty of Elizabeth being accused by Abigail because of the poppet. She made the poppet in court for Elizabeth. Mary is innocent because she tries to clear all of the hysteria up after she feels
