To the Stars “It [the rocket] will free man from his remaining chains, the chains of gravity which still tie him to this planet. It will open to him the gates of heaven.”
— Wernher von Braun, 'The Jupiter People,' Time magazine, 10 February 1958. Franklin Chang Diaz was born April 5, 1950, in Costa Rica. He is of Chinese and Costa Rican Spanish descent. Diaz created improved versions of the Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket (VASIMR). He created, imagined, and innovated to overcome challenges. He also illuminated by changing the world’s view on rocket engines and by improving Latin America’s technology.

When Diaz was seven, he imagined that he was in a spaceship. At age fifteen, he was building and launching homemade rockets. He sent a mouse 100 meters into the air on one of his rockets as a science project. Sputnik and the USS Nautilus inspired him. In the spring of 1980, Diaz was selected to be an astronaut by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). After seven flights, he retired. Eventually, he came up with VASIMR. He stated, “My vision is a future for humanity where we will be completely free to pursue activities outside of our planet”(“Quotes by Franklin Chang Diaz | A-Z Quotes”, 2015). Undoubtedly, he was a very creative, imaginative, and innovative …show more content…
He promoted science and space technology in Latin America. He also led scientists to search for collaboration in space technology, resulting in the First Space Conference of the Americas. Two years later Diaz helped form the Chaga Space Project (“Biography of Franklin Chang Díaz”, 2011). Diaz has made plasma rockets more promising for future uses. He stated, “For decades, people have known the chemical-propulsion approach to space travel is really not going to get us that far. Chemical propulsion is essentially like the horse-and-cart approach to the exploration of the American West, instead of the steamboat or the railroad” (“Quotes by Franklin Chang Diaz | A-Z Quotes”, 2015).He is the most famous person in Costa Rica and holds the record for the most spaceflights ever done. He also leads the implementation for The Strategy for the 21st Century, which is a plan to turn Costa Rica into a fully developed country. Without question, Diaz has changed society in a big
Blasting off into space was once an all-male’s game. But on the heels of such trailblazers as Sally Ride, engineer and inventor Ellen Ochoa became part of growing breed of NASA female astronauts who have since helped change all that. Ellen Ochoa, a veteran astronaut, is the 11th director of the Johnson Space Center. She is JSC’s first Hispanic director, and its second female director. In 1993, she made history by becoming the first Hispanic woman from any country to travel in space. She would follow up this journey with three more space flights in 1994, 1999 and 2001, logging more than 700 hours in space. Despite being rejected two times from NASA’s Training Program,
This quote is definitely one of the most important quotes in this book, but it doesn’t contain the main theme. It does, however contain one of the minor themes in the book, and this quote is directed at all parents and guardians. This quote actually has two ways of interpreting it. The first is the answer that you get by just looking at the quote, which is, you must actually light the fuse in order for a rocket to fly, but there is a much deeper meaning to the second way of interpreting it.
The 1960’s were full of questions, and one of the biggest questions the world was pondering about was regarding the Space Race: was the USA going to beat their communist enemy, the Soviet Union? The Space Race was a series of events that helped to symbolize and determine in the worlds’ eyes which form of government was better, communism (Soviets) or democracy (United States)? In the beginning of the race, the Soviets had the lead, and it was not looking good for America. Then the United States picked up the pace and spent well over eight billion dollars funding the space studies. This period of time made many scientists and astronauts heroes in the eyes of Americans. The Space Race was a combination of determination, intelligence, space projects, and American pride, all used to reach our exploration goals and surpass the Soviets.
Through this national address Reagan hopes to reach out to the public and encourage them to keep their faith firm in the American space progra...
For a long time, people have always dreamed about traveling in spaceships or flying cars. The closer people have ever gotten to that reality is through fictional stories. But, what if there is a chance to start traveling to any destination around the world within less than an hour? Elon Musk’s new idea about traveling around the world by rocket would help humanity to evolve into a much more intelligent species. It would also give rockets a new purpose that hadn’t been thought of before. However, is it possible to accomplish such an ambitious task? Rocket traveling seems to be an accomplishable form of transportation because (1) of Elon Musk´s history of innovation and overcoming challenges, fast advancements
...n is that I was made for another world. If none of my earthly pleasures satisfy it, that does not prove that the universe is a fraud. Probably earthly pleasures were never meant to satisfy it, but only to arouse it, to suggest the real thing. If that is so, I must take care, on the one hand, never to despise, or be unthankful for, these earthly blessings, and on the other, never to mistake them for the something else of which they are only a kind of copy, or echo, or mirage. I must keep alive in myself the desire for my true country, which I shall not find till after death; I must never let it get snowed under or turned aside; I must make it the main object of life to press on to that other country and to help others to do the same." This is true that we must have been made for a different place or desire than earth could give us. That place and desire is Heaven.

Taylor Hagood did a review on Tracy K. Smith’s “The Speed of Belief “ and observed how, while Smith’s father worked on the Hubble Telescope, “this tremendous thing he has helped create still cannot allow anyone to see far enough to find whatever beyond he might now inhabit” (Hagood). But that did not stop Smith. She was able to imagine him lost in the cosmos but still close enough to watch over her. She believed that even though she could not see or touch him, that he was still with her in a sort of way.In the last few stanzas of “The Speed of Belief “ Smith asks herself what her father will become. In the end, she finally decides

Nikola Tesla was born July 10th, 1856 in the town Smiljan which lay in the Lika province of Croatia. Nikola’s parents were Milutin Tesla and Djouka Tesla. His father, Milutin, was a clergy man after failing to stay in the army. The cause of his father enrolling in the army was due to how “an officer criticized him for not keeping his brass buttons polished.” (Aldrich, 1) His mother Djouka gained mature and maternal responsibilities after her mother had gone blind when she was a young girl. Djouka was an inventor and invented many things like butter churns, looms, and kitchen tools such as a mechanical eggbeater. Nikola was the second eldest out of his siblings. The oldest was Dane, and he had three younger sisters called Angelina, Milka, and Marcia. They spent their childhood in the countryside they were born in. As a young child, Nikola did invent many things and was even a hero. At a young age, Nikola’s family moved to Gospic. One Sunday, the fireman brought in a new fire truck and wished to demonstrate how well it worked. They lit an example fire, and when it got too big, tried to extinguish it. The hose did not work however and Nikola suspected a kink in the hose as it drew water from the river. Nikola dove in, untangled the hose, and emerged from the river as a hero to the people. This act and applause for him edged him on to continue inventing for he realized accomplishments such as untangling the h...
When talking about the current space program, Neil Degrasse Tyson once said, “I got angry with America, because advancing is not just something you do incrementally. You need innovation as well, so that your advances are revolutionary, not merely evolutionary” (Tyson 3). America used to have the top space program in the world. Being first to the moon excited the country and gave everyone a sense of pride and fulfillment. Lately, though, we have been falling behind in space exploration.

Most people think that the costly downside to funding space exploration is a reason to avoid spending money on sciences and instead spend it on problems here on earth, but such funding for space exploration actually promotes economical as well as scientific benefits. Space exploration is an important expenditure for the high cost because of the potential for numerous benefits such as the possibility to find useful resources to cultivate, space exploration and satellites produce many thousands of jobs in our economy, and it creates and discovers newer and better technologies through research and development.
The modern day space environment is no longer a mystery to humans. Yuri Gagarin of Russia was the first person to experience space adventure in 1961. Since then, technological advances have enabled space exploration, with new discoveries being made from time to time. Scientists have significantly contributed to the development of space tourism. Noteworthy inventions by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have transformed human life through increasing accessibility to space. The agency has made it possible for astronauts to go to the moon and also to walk around planet Mars with robotic automobiles. The invention of the tri-axis control design has had a significant influence on modern space explorations, helping astronauts to effectively focus their satellites on the target. This has been important in increasing efficiency and precision in astronomical discoveries (Birchard, 2003).
