Women are often referred to as weak and definitely not heroic in mythology. However, Atalanta definitely contradicts this as she showed many people that they were wrong. She is very inspirational as not many people believed in her and she proved to them that she was capable. Atalanta is a hero. She is independant, she is always positive and she is an exceptional huntress.
First, Atalanta is very independent which is definitely a heroic characteristic. Her father wanted a baby boy, so when Atalanta was born, he was very mad and left her in a forest so that she would die. However, a few bears found her before anything could attack her, and they raised her as their own. Even though she didn't have any parents growing up, she showed a lot of independence and courage as she became a great huntress on her own. Atalanta also knew what she valued, and she protected those values when she was in trouble. She wanted to stay a virgin, and when people came to attack her, she fought them off in order to protect what she believed in. When she was waiting for someone to beat her in a race so she could marry them, she fell in love with a man she was racing. Instead of being competitive and trying to beat him, she let him win so that they could live a happy life. She had a good attitude about the whole situation which was heroic. Atalanta is also very passionate and happy while she is hunting which helps her do well and improve. Even though her father abandoned her, she didn’t hold a grudge when she returned to him many years later. Not holding a grudge and having a positive attitude showed she was the better person, which benefited her because she became closer with her dad. Due to a accidental exclusion of sacrifice to greek goddess of hunt and moon named Artemis by a the king, Artemis got furious and sent a huge boat to come down and terrorize the people. Atalanta was able to join the hunt full of men heros because of her talent. No one thought she should be there but Atalanta proved them all wrong by killing the boar just before anymore people got hurt. However Atalanta had shown that she could do things just as good as a boy could leading to her father taking her back into his home, this step in the Hero's Journey is called the atonement with the father yet that does happen until later in Atalanta's life. In considering the relationship between the meanings of myths and their representation of women, we learned that the major role in shaping the narratives was played by men. Myths reveal to us the experiences of women living in the patriarchal society and we gain the symbol value accorded to women and we come to realize what the term "Woman" meant to the ancient Greek man. Reading through the various stories on Goddesses and queens, monsters and more. Princesses, we learn that there are three major levels of women in Greek mythology. The first level is composed of the divine beings known as the goddesses.
The women presented throughout The Odyssey provide a respectable representation of women in ancient Greece in general. There are several women introduced in The Odyssey, all of various backgrounds and social classes. The most notable women or type of women in this epic include goddesses, Penelope, and the housemaids and servants.
In Homer's composition, The Odyssey, the roles women play are very significant. The best examples of the true nature of women occur when Odysseus encounters Circe and Calypso. These two characters illustrate the thoughts and feelings of how women how a woman feels and how they think. As the quote states, Circe and Calypso illustrate how women really can be crafty, intelligent, sneaky, disloyal, and cruel. In contrast to battles with men, Cyclops, or animals, sexual battles with women are sometimes much more difficult to win.
Homer's great epic, "The Odyssey" was written several thousands of years ago, a time in human history when men played the dominant role in society. The entire structure of civilization was organized and controlled by men; It was an accepted fact that women held an inferior position in society. Society was constructed as if women were around only to serve the men. The involvement of women in any circumstance was almost completely dominated by what the men allowed. The women were valued in society, only they were not given important roles or any decision making power. It is as if they held no power in the ancient Greek society. This is why Homer's Odyssey is very unique, Homer put women into roles that were previously unheard of for women to possess. Unlike in The Iliad, where women served merely as an object to men; female characters of Odyssey are distinctive because they possess personality, and have intricate relationships with the male characters of the Odyssey. By characterizing the women in "The Odyssey", a reader may come to some conclusions about the role of women in this epic. Along with the belief that women played a secondary role to men in society, the female characters displayed certain traits that could not be exhibited by the men. Athena demonstrated the most intelligence and valor out of all the characters in "The Odyssey." The male characters play the most significant roles in this epic, but without the support of the females in "The Odyssey", Odysseus would not have made it through his journey.
Mortal and immortal women inspire many of the events that take place in The Odyssey and The Epic of Gilgamesh. For example, without the harlot, who “tames” Enkidu, the story of Gilgamesh would not be, as we know it. A chapter entitled, “Women in Ancient Epic” from A Companion to Ancient Epic by Helene Foley compares Ishtar in Gilgamesh to Calypso and Circe in The Odyssey. By comparing the role of immortal and mortal women in both The Odyssey and The Epic of Gilgamesh, one will be able to discern how the feminine figures have played a pivotal role in shaping the destiny of the epic heroes, as well as, understanding the interrelation amongst the female figures of both ancient epics.
People are heroes in different ways for different reasons. American soldiers are heroes because they fight boldly for their country. Corrie Ten Boom is also a hero because she took risks and saved hundreds of Jews. Abraham Lincoln is another example of a hero because he fought for what he thought was right and helped free all slaves. Similarly, Odysseus, the main character in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, possesses all of these characteristics and many more, making him a true epic hero.

Due to the emotional distance between Reyna and her parents the siblings foster a stronger bond as an act of resilience against their complex relationships with their parents. Taking in consideration the achievements of Reyna Grande as an author, aside of growing up in poverty and the difficult relationship with her parents is an act of personal resilience. To me, a hero is someone who can show courage when faced with a problem, who Is able to help others in various ways, someone who gives others who need support the strength to push and go on through life’s difficulties. When one thinks of heroes, names such as Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and Mother Theresa often come to mind. Not only did these people had a lot of achievements in their lives, but they also left a mark in our world. They have definitely changed the world. When I personally think of two heroes that changed the world’s idea on women I always remember Oprah Winfrey and Malala Yousafzai.
