During this essay I will be describing how rappers use rhetorical appeals. Rappers throughout the hip hop genre use numerous different styles in their lyrical writing. I will be using Eminem’s song “When I’m Gone” as an example. I think this is a perfect example since he expresses a lot of feelings and talks about his life.
Ethos is presented all around this song, if you listen to the whole song by the end you would know that it’s just a dream he was having. Anyways he makes us believe that it’s actually happening. The song begins with him waking up in the morning, Hailie goes up to Eminem but he’s writing a song “Daddy's writing a song, this song ain't gon' write itself.” During the song the day keeps passing and he has to catch a plane

but his daughter won’t let him leave. “She's piling boxes in front of the door trying to block it, Daddy please, Daddy don't leave, Daddy - no stop it!" Since he’s dreaming after that incident, he goes through the door but the door turns into a stage and he’s singing. At that time he was a best-selling artist and was also at the top his game. “And just as I go to walk out of my bedroom door it turns to a stage, they're gone, and this spotlight is on, and I'm singing.” We can conclude at the end of the song that this song is actually about a dream, and this dream makes him realize how important his family really is. “That's when I wake up, alarm clock's ringin', there's birds singin” He wakes up from a nightmare to a beautiful sunny day. Glad that it’s over, he goes out back to spend some time with his family. The argument in this Eminem song is his daughter realizing that he’s not a good dad.
He never has time for Hailie because he’s so focused on his music and always working, sometimes even ignoring her. "Daddy where's Mommy? I can't find Mommy where is she? I don't know go play Hailie, baby, your Daddy's busy Daddy's writing a song, this song ain't gon' write itself.” He tells Hailie that he’s not leaving no more, she says he’s lying, and Eminem swears he’s not for the last time: “Baby, Daddy ain't leaving no more, Daddy you're lying, You always say that, you always say this is the last time, But you ain't leaving no more, Daddy you're mine." And even after that he ends up leaving, Hailie is mad and sad because all she wants is her dad, “you told me that you weren't leaving you lied to me Dad, and now you make Mommy sad.” He makes a metaphor by saying the walls were talking when it’s actually his conscience telling to do something before it’s too late, “These fuckin' walls must be talking, cause man I can hear 'em, They're saying ‘You've got one more chance to do right’ – and it's tonight, Now go out there and show that you love 'em before it's too late.” Eminem’s support of his argument is that it’s his life he’s talking about; no one knows his life better than him, …show more content…
“Yeah it's my life in my own words…” Pathos is presented here from how much he loves his daughter.
He starts off by asking if you ever loved someone so much you would give an arm for: “Have you ever loved someone so much, you'd give an arm for?, Not the expression, no, literally give an arm for?,” Even though “I will give my right arm” is a common expression to describe how you are willing to do anything to protect someone, Eminem means it literally, he has a picture of Hailie tattooed on his arm as if he has dedicated that arm to her. “When they know they're your heart and you know you were their armor, and you will destroy anyone who would try to harm her,” Eminem protects his daughter, his daughter is his emotional center and the person he wants to protect. It establishes that she’s the heart and he’s the armor. We can see that Eminem loves his daughter a lot but says that the crazy things he does aren’t done by him they are done by his crazy alter-ego ‘Slim Shady’. Also says that ‘Slim Shady’ is the reason of his fame and everything he has. “That's Slim Shady, yeah baby, Slim Shady's crazy Shady made me…” But this song doesn’t come from the ‘Slim Shady’ perspective, this is the Real Marshall Mathers talking. Everything he talks about is honest and coming from deep down his heart, expressing a lot of
emotion. Through the song a swing appears in every verse. In the first verse he doesn’t have time for it, in the second Eminem is pushing Haile but she shows how she’s unhappy about him leaving, and in the last verse the swing is like a final painting of a happy family. This shows how he actually is changing and it just took some time, but at the end it is accomplished and his life is better than before. This song is to show how much Eminem loves his daughter and would do anything in order for her to be happy, even if it means changing himself. The audience for this can probably be anyone that has kids, it can make them realize that maybe they’re doing the same thing. Also this song can be towards an audience between ages 15-30, because some kids younger than that might not understand the message this song gives. I’m 18 and this song made my eyes watery the first time I heard and saw the music video, even then every time I listen to it
“Consider the lobster” by David Foster Wallace and “Letters from Birmingham Jail” by MLK Jr. apply rhetoric such as pathos, logos, ethos, and diction in order to create a firm persuasive essay. In Wallace’s article the audience is questioned about the morality behind killing and cooking a lobster, while in MLK’s article we are persuaded to take action about social injustice and inequality. Both authors try to prompt their readers with different types of rhetoric, but together they apply pathos more than ethos and logos.
In 1997 he went to the Rap Olympics in Los Angeles where a few producers were very impressed and took a demo to Dr. Dre. After the two met, they recorded four songs within the first six hours of working together, creating his first album Marshall Mathers LP. That album was the first rap album to ever be nominated for “Album of the Year” and won 3 Grammy awards. In the first week the album was released, it sold 1.76 million copies in the U.S. which is a record for a solo artist. Eminem has released 10 albums, all rap music. He would spend hours...

Throughout the course of this novel, Ishmael Beah keeps the readers on the edge of their seat by incorporating interchanging tones. At the beginning of the novel, the tone can be depicted as naïve, for Beah was unaware to what was actually occurring with the rebels. Eventually, the tone shifts to being very cynical and dark when he depicts the fighting he has endured both physically and mentally. However, the most game changing tone is towards the end of the novel in chapters nineteen and twenty. His tone can be understood as independent or prevailing. It can be portrayed as independent because Beah learns how to survive on his own and to take care of himself. At the same time, it is perceived as prevailing and uplifting because Beah was able to demonstrate that there is hope. Later in the novel, Beah travels to
In Adam Bradley’s “Rap poetry 101” he shows us how rap is more than just songs being sung, it is poetry; it is something that has an empowering ability to make the familiar unfamiliar. In this chapter Bradley creates a new viewpoint too rap. Bradley shows us how rap and poetry has become a very similar piece of art that should be further appreciated. In the chapter poetry 101 Bradley describes how rap is a form of public art, and how rappers have become our greatest public poets. The importance of rap as poetry is shown throughout Bradley's book as well as the evidence behind the reasons rap is poetry.

“He say Mr. Parris must be kill! Mr. Parris no goodly man, Mr. Parris mean man and no gentle man and he bid me rise out of bed and cut your throat!” (Miller 47).
Despite there being hundreds of video game releases every year, most of these games are unoriginal and therefore unplayable. There are countless video game genres, but one of the most popular genres in the past few years have been the zombie games, also called survival games. I was thoroughly convinced that all the games in this genre were clichéd and overdone, until I played the video game The Last of Us. Even though it is a survival game, the focus is not on gruesome zombies or gratuitous violence, making it already vastly different from the others. Instead, the focus is on telling a story. Between the gorgeous graphics, serene music, and flawless acting, it already goes beyond being just another “zombie game,” but this isn’t even accounting
20 were executed” (Blumberg). The Crucible setting is based on The Salem Witch trials, but the plot is based on The Red Scare. The author employs strict tone and rhetorical questions to convey power. This connects to the purpose of how a occurring can devastate a whole community and the people in it. Arthur Miller, the author of The Crucible, employs empowerment by expressing the challenges within each character and their influence on the trial through the characters John Proctor, Abigail, and Danforth.
He uses specific tone through his text his tone is meant to inform and persuade giving him creditability towards his argument. He uses pathos through his text by saying the way music makes people feel a certain way and understand the argument making it stronger, he also uses the story of his mothers death to play with the readers emotions. He uses words like ghetto, Blacks, love , soul, gangsters, etc to show persuade the audience and she if the emotions of the reader would be affected. He then brings in ethos by using creditable mentions of Fetty Wap and statistics like “At the time of this writing, “Trap Queen” is the #2 song in America. To have the #2 song in America is to hit pretty much every demographic…” To provide the audience a sense of trust with him making his argument gain power. He also includes tweets to validate his argument and create stronger support from his intended audience and giving the audience a sense of
In 1729, Jonathan Swift published a pamphlet called “A Modest Proposal”. It is a satirical piece that described a radical and humorous proposal to a very serious problem. The problem Swift was attacking was the poverty and state of destitution that Ireland was in at the time. Swift wanted to bring attention to the seriousness of the problem and does so by satirically proposing to eat the babies of poor families in order to rid Ireland of poverty. Clearly, this proposal is not to be taken seriously, but merely to prompt others to work to better the state of the nation. Swift hoped to reach not only the people of Ireland who he was calling to action, but the British, who were oppressing the poor. He writes with contempt for those who are oppressing the Irish and also dissatisfaction with the people in Ireland themselves to be oppressed.
He discusses how his mom got him christmas presents and how he was shocked due to being from a very poor family due to not having the advantage of being white. He continues to say how his emotions are pouring out of him as in he is letting all of the stuff that he has gone through that was hard out and he is ready to let it all out for the best of his health. He mainly discusses the pain he has gone through and how it is hard growing up as a young black male. After this main song, he continues to open up on how he coped with this heartache that he has gone through.
This is a compare and contrast rhetorical analysis paper focusing on a print billboard advertisement and television commercial. The billboard advertisement is centered on a smoking death count, sponsored by several heart research associations. In addition, the television Super Bowl commercial illustrates how irresistible Doritos are, set in an ultrasound room with a couple and their unborn child. The following paragraphs will go in depth to interpret the pathos, logos, and ethos of both the billboard and the television advertisements. Clark (2016) suggests that rhetoric isn’t limited to oral communication, but currently has a permanent foothold in written works: magazine or newspaper excerpts, novels, and scientific reports.
Director Steven Spielberg and auther Markus Zusak, in their intriguing production, movie Saving Private Ryan and book The Book Thief, both taking place during World War II. However , in Saving Private Ryan Spielberg focus on a lot of complications that occur during war , but guilt was one difficulty that stood out to me. Zusak, on the other hand , showas that having courage during war can be a advantage and also an disadvantage depending on the situation. Both director and author grabed the audience attention with emotional and logical appeal.
