THE IMPORTANCE OF RHETORIC
‘Rhetoric is the study and art of writing and speaking well, being persuasive and knowing how to compose successful writing and presentations.’ (The University of Iowa, Department of Rhetoric, n.d.)
Rhetoric is the art of effective communication, either in forms of verbal and non-verbal communication that is oral speeches, written speeches, and other forms of paralanguage such as gestures, accent, voice tone etc. It is important to note that language is a paramount aspect of rhetoric, as it is the means through which ideologies are shared with an audience, thus causing the members of the audience to be influenced.
Rhetoric is something we all come across daily, it is a way of life and it is of importance in various works of life; such as education, religion, business, …show more content…

Good use of rhetorical skills when interacting with fellow human beings helps promote good and healthy relationships, while bad communication or miscommunication often leads to conflict and confusion. Some examples of the use of rhetoric in everyday life are; in marital situations, effective communication between spouses makes for a healthier relationship. Also, an employee pitching an idea to an employer, or making a presentation requires good use of rhetorical skills in order to succeed.
The media and entertainment industries which are responsible for films, novels, dramas, magazines, etc, also make use of rhetoric not just to boost sales and readership, but also to teach their audience some life lessons, educate them on certain topics, and if possible influence their perception of certain issues. Screen writers, film makers, journalists, broadcasters, editors, have ways in which they present certain controversial topics for example same- sex relationships such that they are most likely to succeed in persuading their audience into believing what they want them to
