Genetics play an important role in development as far as I have experienced. An early experience, which contributed in my development, would be education and my culture. School has always been an immense part of my life for development. Teachers and classmates played a major role for good educational experiences. They helped me to enhance and learn academic abilities. Also, culture contributes in child growth and the person they eventually become. My parents played an active role shaping my cultural and spiritual life by providing me a continuous opportunity to interact with my peers and adults of all ages who share same religious belief and who can act as cultural role models. I practiced same customs and belief, which made me feel a sense of belonging and pride for the community. As a child, my developmental experience was substantial through the observation of family behavior. Healthy food choices aren’t that eye appealing. When I was a child, I used to follow peers path. TV commercials for junk food seemed to be impossible to avoid. For my parents, it was always difficult to convince my elder brother and me that an apple is as sweet as a chocolate chip cookie. In other words, an apple a day keeps a doctor away. Moreover, my parents ensured our diet in nutritious ways like motivating us to eat more fruit and vegetables rather than sodas and potato/tortillas chips. When I grew little older, I was given education about well-balanced nutritious foods, which help us to live a long and healthy life. I used to read books written by different nutritionist about eating well, as well as I used to visit my doctor every six months to gain the knowledge about healthy food versus unhealthy
food. My eating habits definitely acted as a forerunner for not having a weight problem today because it encouraged me a lot of physical exercises. People, who eat right and equal amount, have more energy to play and to engage in different sports activities comparing to people who consume high fat and sugar. I made it possible by reinforcing my new healthy habits. For instance, making my own lunch. My eating habits are totally different nowadays than I used to eat when I was a kid. Getting a proper education from teachers, parents and my doctor definitely helped me to choose the foods I eat wisely.
As a child I remember that I wanted many things I saw on T.V. like Carl's Jr, Lucky Charms, Mcdonald's, Gushers, ect… When eating these food products, as you get older it affects your health. A good advice we can take from Wendell Berry is “Eat responsibly.”
Although avoiding foods that contain certain ingredients is helpful, it seems to be unavoidable to those with a low socioeconomic status based on their economic, environmental and personal factors. Nutrition and health have become more popular in today 's society. Our generation is becoming more and more indebted to the idea of being healthy and eating nutritious meals. However, in “The American Paradox,” by Michael Pollan he argues that our unhealthy population is preoccupied with nutrition and the idea of eating healthy than their actual health. He also mentions the food industry, nutrition science and how culture affects the way we eat and make food choices. While Pollan is right about all these factor that affect our eating habits, there is more to it than that. Proper nutrition is important in maintaining a long and healthy life. Most Americans are rushed due to their busy work schedules, and do not take the time to plan their diets properly. Like me, most Americans are unaware of the importance of eating a healthy diet and consume too many foods without the proper nutrients. Throughout my life I have been fortunate. I have not had any major health problems, and have been able to consume most foods without having to worry about gaining weight. These last two years, however, I started to gain weight and have become concerned with my diet. Genetics is a scientific discipline that deals with how individuals inherit their physical and behavioral attributes. Generally, genetics is a branch of biology that deals with the science of heredity, genes, and differences in living organisms. It’s the process with which a child inherits traits from his/her parents and the molecular organization and function of genes. The question of what determines the development of a child has been an issue that has attracted considerable concerns and debates across educators, biologists, and psychologists. This issue has attracted huge concerns because it’s impossible to explain each and every factor that eventually determines who a child becomes. Notably, the development of a child involves a mix of various influences such as parenting, genetics, individual experiences, family relationships, friends, and school. One of the most important influences on a child’s development and growth is genetics, which primarily is the process of traits inheritance from parents to offspring.
The distinction between nature versus nurture or even environment versus heredity leads to the question of: does the direct environment or the nature surrounding an adolescent directly influence acts of delinquency, later progressing further into more radical crimes such as murder or psychotic manifestation, or is it directly linked to the hereditary traits and genes passed down from that individual adolescent’s biological parents? To answer this question one must first understand the difference between nature, nurture, environment, and heredity. Nurture, broken down further into environment, is defined as various external or environmental factors one is exposed to which can be more specifically broken down into social and physical aspects. Nature, itself broken down into heredity, is defined as the genetics and the individual characteristics in one’s personality or even human nature.
From the day that I was conceived my genes were randomly given to me from my parents. My genetics influence my development. I know my genetic make-up determine my characteristics and reveals the limit of what I can do. Most genetic influences can be observed since they are expressed as physical characteristics. For instance, I am a female, I am short in height, I have green eyes with 20/20 vision, I also have fair skin (“caucasian”), I have curly, dirty blonde hair, and I have a skinny stature. These are a few examples of what I believe are genetic influences on my development.
First, I will address the root issue of many people’s eating habits, and then I will expand on why and how to develop a healthier lifestyle.
