Everyone’s standards towards a great book can differ from person to person. What others consider as good reads are not necessarily the ones that will suit my personal preferences. If I do not have an idea of what books are worthy of reading, then it is simply impossible to differentiate a good book from a great book. There are thousands of books in this world, but what makes them all different and unique is the literature. Literary quality is substantial, and that is why the key elements that makes a great book are the theme, the ability to capture my attention, and ultimately being able to take away value by learning through reading. The theme of a given book is very important in terms of distinguishing someone to pick up an award winning book, rather than an amateur read. …show more content…
It can challenge our minds, and you never know when the knowledge acquired can help us in the real world, when we seek opportunities to apply it to our everyday lives. Thus, I learn and become captivated by the fascinating books I read. One example I have is when I had read the book #Girlboss. Prior to reading this, I never knew a company called Nasty Gal ever existed. That is something I have learned, but because of this book it also changed my outlook on life. This is because Sophia Amoruso had shared her life experiences with her readers including myself, and let me tell you it is full of hardships. However, she went from a high school dropout to becoming the CEO of a multi-million dollar company. This truly amazed me, and she is so admirable too. That is not all, she also gave many tips about personal development, along with career advancement. Immediately, I fell in love with this book because I have learned from someone else’s mistakes, it is humorous, it gives me confidence, it feels personal, which makes it all the more
My parents have always stressed the importance of reading. Throughout my whole life, they have motivated me to read and they have encouraged me to find books that I find interesting to read. Because of their encouragement, I am an avid reader today. When I was a child, just starting to enjoy reading I liked to read books that were fiction. Some of my favorite books to read as a child are series that I still love today and I think I still have every book in each series stored in my attic. They are The Boxcar Children, Junie B. Jones, and The Magic Tree House.
Any great novel seeks to explore human nature, our morality, our trust in each other, the delicate inner workings of our societies. A classic that does more than explore the ways of our world, it exposes them, down to the nitty-gritty bare bones. These books force us to look at the world around us and truly see everything that is happening around us, not just the outer layers.... ... middle of paper ... ...
My dad taught me that books could be my teachers, my mom taught me that our backyard could be my classroom, and my sister showed me that you could bring books into the swimming pool. I did not know it when I would spend hours in the pool reading a book that my parents weren’t encouraging it in vain, but my family life, for good reason, was centered on books. We were the planets orbiting around one sun that was the bookshelf. Little did I know that books would be the catalyst to academic success in my early life, and I owe it all to my family. Although a life with a book in your nose might seem boring, I was never bored. Living through the characters vicariously, I explored Narnia with Lucy, attended Hogwarts with Harry, and rode dragons with Eragon. Of course
What makes a “good” book? Although many may argue it all depends on the person reading the book, a list of standards have been developed so that all kinds of works can be evaluated to determine if they hold literary merit, removing most subjectivity from the matter. These standards ensure that the literary piece is judged on far more than just a personal preference. Some works that uphold the outline for literary merit include To Kill a Mockingbird, The Kite Runner, and Jane Eyre – to name a few. The 2014 novel Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult also claims the honor of possessing literary merit, given that it meets nearly all the requirements.
How the theme of the novel is developed and enhanced by plot, character and setting.
For an abundance of authors, the driving force that aids them in creation of a novel is the theme or number of themes implemented throughout the novel. Often times the author doesn’t consciously identify the theme they’re trying to present. Usually a theme is a concept, principle or belief that is significant to an author. Not only does the theme create the backbone of the story, but it also guides the author by controlling the events that happen in a story, what emotions are dispersed, what are the actions of characters, and what emotions are presented within each environment to engage the readers in many
What is the definition of a good novel? Opinions on this question may differ, but there are many things that good novels have in common. Most importantly, the reader must enjoy the novel. When I use the word enjoy, I don’t necessarily mean that it should make the reader ‘happy’ or ‘joyful’. The novel should give the reader a valuable or worthwhile experience. Many good novels often address topics that relate to our own reality. In George Orwell’s Animal Farm, one of the main focuses is on power and corruption.
To make a great book, there are certain criterion which a book must meet. A book needs to be entertaining so the reader will enjoy it and continue to read on. A great novel needs to be well written. It should have a message or a lesson for the reader to pick up on. All great literature also needs to be timeless so it can be applied in different times and places.
The theme of any literary work is comprised of various things, such as symbolism, tone, structure, plot, and even the characters. The theme is one of the main
These Harry Potter books showed me to open my mind and to let it fly. When you read a book it is important to visualize the story, this
Reading leave me a lot of good things, such as learning what is going on around the
Books have magic and they have taught me so much. " Divergent" taught me that your parents don't define you, and neither does your government. " Harry Potter" taught a lot, such as that there is always someone who loves you, and that you can survive anything. New books provide a sense of adventure and curiosity, while old books
Trying to define what is “good” literature and if it is a “must-read” is a difficult task to do because good literature can be must-reads, but not all must-reads are considered as good literature. It’s like trying to define why all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares. It doesn’t work the other way around. There are countless number of ways to define “good” literature and which ones are “must-reads”. It could be defined as having a strong theme, a lot of figurative language, imagery, if it questions the reader, not a plot-driven story, if it is enjoyable or not, or even by popularity.
In the contemporary era, if you don’t have any desire or need for information, there will be no good future for you. Life is very much pre-determined. Books not only increase your intellect but also influence your reading and writing skills. Books can be read again and again as they are the most credible and precious media of mass communication.
It gets you to think about what really goes on in your life and how you came to these conclusions. Such as who has made an impact in your life. Like how my parents have shaped my views on sexual mates so much and me not ever really having knowledge of it. Also how certain professors have made a big impact on your thought of prostitution. I am not going to lie at first I saw prostitution it 's okay, but then really got to thinking and remember a book a professor had me read called Half The Sky and how it made an impact on how I view prostitution. I feel like I have gained more knowledge about myself that I always had but was not
