Something you might not know about me is that I love to read.When I started school, I already knew how to read. While we were learning how to spell words like "five" and "truck" in kindergarten, I was years ahead of my peers and was reading whole books by myself. So why do I love to read? Anyone who has ever read a good book knows that it will take you to a whole new world, with new characters and new places to explore. Books have magic and they have taught me so much. "Divergent" taught me that your parents don't define you, and neither does your government. "Harry Potter" taught a lot, such as that there is always someone who loves you, and that you can survive anything. New books provide a sense of adventure and curiosity, while old books
My parents have always stressed the importance of reading. Throughout my whole life, they have motivated me to read and they have encouraged me to find books that I find interesting to read. Because of their encouragement, I am an avid reader today. When I was a child, just starting to enjoy reading I liked to read books that were fiction. Some of my favorite books to read as a child are series that I still love today and I think I still have every book in each series stored in my attic. They are The Boxcar Children, Junie B. Jones, and The Magic Tree House.
Instead of mom reading children’s books to me, I read them to her. And if I stumbled upon something I didn’t know or understand, mom helped me out! Soon enough I started reading to her without stuttering of not knowing how to say a word. I started being able to sound out words easier and my fluency became much better than before. First grade came around and I started reading bigger books such as Junie B. Jones and also the Magic Treehouse books. Books became easier to read as I aged and the books I read were getting bigger and bigger. In 5th and 6th grade I read The Red Pyramid, The Throne of Fire, and The Serpents Shadow, a trilogy called The Kane Chronicles written by Rick Riordan. I thought these three books were the greatest three books ever written! I even thought they were better than the hunger games! Especially with the series being based around Egyptian gods and theology, and also managed to tie in kids around my age that I could relate to. Those books made me love reading more than I ever have and I would read them again if I had the time to. Once 8th grade came out along I decided to read a “big boy” book: DaVinci Code by Dan Brown. I thought I was so cool because I was reading a book that my parents have read. It has been the best book I have yet to read so far because it sparked my interest from the first sentence, to the last, there was intense suspense throughout the whole book and I could nonstop
Reading a book is in many ways the same as exercising the muscles in your arm, as you are feeding your brain new information and ideas of life. Life is short and I believe that you should always be positive and do the things that you want without people telling you that you are wrong. The following Novels have taught me various aspects, which I have and still am using to make my life a memorable one as well as a positive one.
I am a passionate reader. I enjoy reading. It has given me the tools I need for my academic success and to have a wider vision of the world and my surroundings. I love to read; it is what I do, I read.
Everyone loves to sit down and read a good book that really makes you get into it. What about a type of literature that really makes you wonder and is not realistic but fun to read about because it is different. Then maybe you should read the book called Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, which was written by a talented writer named J.K. Rowling. This is an amazing book that is very popular, but then at the same time very disliked by some also. Witchcraft and other mythical actions happen upon this novel and can capture your mind in the first chapter. It can capture children and adults alike; this is not just a book for children. Some adults think otherwise though because many of them have been trying to ban Harry Potter books from public schools. Many adults that think this have caused a great amount of arguments between the school districts and community. A vast amount of parents say it is evil and inappropriate to read to students accounting that they may believe in bad beliefs from now on. Harry Potter should not be banned from public schools because you have your own rights, it is your belief with different views, and you can’t control the whole public school.
“Books are uniquely portable magic,” Stephen King wrote on “On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft”. I quite agree with this view. In retrospect, the genres of books which I read gradual vary as my age periods. Additionally, those books which I have read browsed my horizon and improved my understanding ability to some degree.
My favorite book is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling. This book is full of adventure, mystery and suspense. It is about a boy named Harry Potter, whose parents died when he was at a very young age whom later on Harry found out were killed by Lord Voldemort, the Dark Wizard. He was then raised by his Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia and their son, Dudley who were not kind and abusive to Harry. His life changed on his 11th birthday when he found out that he is actually a wizard. Hagrid, a groundskeeper at Hogwarts helped him to shop for everything he would need to go to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He took the train from platform 9 ¾ where he met his new friends, Hermione and Ron. They were housed at the Gryffindors ( a house known for bravery). He learned how to make potions and fly a broom ( Harry realized he’s a superstar on a broomstick) and earned himself a spot on a Gryffindor Quidditch team as a Seeker, which is a very important position on the team. My dad taught me that books could be my teachers, my mom taught me that our backyard could be my classroom, and my sister showed me that you could bring books into the swimming pool. I did not know it when I would spend hours in the pool reading a book that my parents weren’t encouraging it in vain, but my family life, for good reason, was centered on books. We were the planets orbiting around one sun that was the bookshelf. Little did I know that books would be the catalyst to academic success in my early life, and I owe it all to my family. Although a life with a book in your nose might seem boring, I was never bored. Living through the characters vicariously, I explored Narnia with Lucy, attended Hogwarts with Harry, and rode dragons with Eragon. Of course
Growing up, we had one television in our house, and most of the time my older brother would take control of the remote. After I would argue with him and lose, I would have no choice but to go in my room and read. I preferred reading over watching movies anyway, I just wanted to give my brother a good fight. I liked reading better because I had the power to choose what the scenery and characters looked like. If they turn one of my favorite books into a movie, I am usually disappointed because it is never the way I imagined
Besides this immersion into a world of books, I credit my love of reading to the fact that my parents only let me watch an hour of TV a day. I learned to use my mind and imagination to entertain myself. It's not really surprising that literature became my vocation. When not reading or writing, I enjoy watching films, baking, going to the city to eat Thai and Ethiopian food, walking, and relaxing with my friends.
I also remember as young girl learning how to read and my favorite book that I could quote word for word was “Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr.Suess. I loved that book so much I still have that today. As I got older my love for reading and books started to diminish, I went to a private school for my elementary years and their curriculum was very intense. It was required to read a book from their approved list and complete a book report each summer before the school year began. Not to mention the numerous books reports I would have to complete during the school. At an early age books and reading was something I had to do and not what I wanted to do.
Before reading Harry Potter, I very rarely read for pleasure. I found reading boring, almost old fashioned. My frame of mind more readily paralleled Danny Divito in the movie Matlida, who says that “[t]here's nothing you can get from a book that you can't get from a television faster.” While my view of reading as a child could be summed up in that quote, everything changed when I was introduced to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. I can remember to this day when my Dad began reading Harry Potter to me, and how I did not understand just how much this book would change me. Harry Potter and his world of wizardry became my own personal Shangri-La, my escape, my own world. Anytime I wanted, I could ascend to a world of fantasy and explore the depths of my own imagination in a way that I had never been capable of doing before. Writing has always been one of the things that I’m passionate about. Whenever I have something on my mind, I would jot it down or type it in my notes. No matter how small or pathetic it seems, I would always write it down, because you never know when you’re going to go back to it and create something grand, out of inspiration. People would think that a person like me would write down poems or novel ideas. That’s completely true, but I also write down recipes, grocery lists, hate lists and literally anything that comes to my mind. I’m the type of person that does not like to miss anything, forget anything and likes to include everything. People would say I’m a perfectionist or a control freak and as much as I would hate to admit that, it is true. While these traits of mine might hinder my writing process, during this school year I learned how to embrace them.
