Have you ever wondered how to mend all the things that are wrong in the world and make them right? Have you ever felt that things need to be changed? Volunteering is an important contributor to our society. It is also a great opportunity to learn different skills, especially young people, and they will become a part of who you are. A real volunteer does it because they see a need and want to help. It may, however, as an extra benefit, increase your career prospects tremendously. The type of work you decide to do is as varied as anything out there. You might volunteer at home, in your neighborhood, or in the city. You might decide to volunteer with the elderly or the homeless. You might volunteer in a soup kitchen or even in a project to rebuild a part of the neighborhood. You might volunteer with young disadvantaged people or paint a community center. Volunteer agencies even offer placements abroad. You could consider getting involved in recreation or you might prefer arts or culture. Whether it is animals or the environment, there is bound to be somewhere that is right for you. People become volunteers for all different of reasons. They find out new things about themselves that they had not even thought of before. I am going to take the class Practicum, which is a health science class where I get to work at a hospital and learn how to become a medical assistant. At the end of the year I will take the licensing exam and hopefully will be able to get a job as a medical assistant. I am also thinking of rejoining HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) because there are medical volunteering opportunities as well as school medical competitions. I now volunteer with the other members at elementary schools, parades downtown, etc. I think volunteering in any form is very good for teaching the values of service, how it’s important to give back to the community and help those who have have helped you. I volunteer for AVID and NHS.
It helps a person make new friends and it is good for increasing the number of people one can fall back to when they need someone to listen to their problems. My main focus on volunteering is to help and/or improve other individuals lives. Whether it’s a small thing like shoveling elderly neighbors driveways during the winter or a bigger thing like running youth group at the local church and leading prayers. Not only do the people I help get joy from it, but helping others surely puts joy in my life too. Also, with the knowledge I have acquired through high school, tutoring others is something I enjoy doing because helping others understand something difficult is very important. During school, assisting teachers with going to grab printed papers or picking up excess garbage in the cafeteria after lunch are many of the things I do to improve the school and the people in it such as students and faculty staff. I went out to collect cans for the food shelter, I helped out at the bowling special olympics, and in December I volunteered to help set up a 5k races Autism, and the thing I took out of my volunteering experiences so far is that everyone has a story and to take the time to listen to others and connect with the world around you. In my experiences you can learn more serving people for an hour than you can learn in a week of classes. My only regret in my freshman year of college is that I didn’t figure out this sooner than I did.
Why I want to volunteer I am directionless. Lost in a sea of people; people who all seem to know what they want to do with their lives. This summer, I had the opportunity to volunteer at many diverse locations. From the hospital to the local library, I truly value my experience and treasure everything it has thought me. Volunteering lets us experience and learn things that we otherwise would not have learned; volunteering opens doors for us that we may not have been able to open before. Volunteering provides us with guidance and tolerance which we may use in the future to aid us in our decisions. A reflection of my volunteering experience can be summarized in two words: Life-changing. In other words, it is a feeling in which you want to share with others. Maybe with a friend, maybe a classmate, maybe a family member, or maybe even a stranger.
