Why Do I Volunteer?
Some people volunteer to gain career experience, to build their resume. Develop skills or learn new ones. In addition volunteer work enables others to make contacts with people in their chosen career.
Some people volunteer to build self-esteem, to make themselves feel better. To feel needed, to feel that they have a place in this world. To truly feel like they are making a contribution to society.
Some people volunteer for the social aspect, to climb the social ladder while helping those less fortunate.
Some people volunteer as a result of the instilled set of values they have a set of values that compel them to act on deeply held beliefs about the importance of helping others.
Some people volunteer because they have felt the cruel sting that life may have afflicted them or a loved one with. For example someone might volunteer for the American Cancer Society because a family member died of cancer.
And some people do it because they want a better understanding about different people or the organization they serve, "bridging the gap," so to speak, in order to better understand their community and themselves.
However, I volunteer to give back to my community. I am grateful for the help I received from others. When I was in high school I participated in the Upward Bound program.
There I was influenced by the
A major difference though is that each deals with racism differently. Tommy blows it off because he just tries to overcome it and become better than the opposing person. Richard becomes angry over it, but acts naively towards it. This can be seen when he gets caught selling the paper, and he doesn't know what it is. "I protested naively, feeling unsure of the entire world now, feeling that racial propaganda surely could not be published in Chicago, the city to which Negroes were fleeing by the thousands." On the other hand Malcolm decides to act white instead of being upset by it. He dyes his hair and walks around with Sophia a white woman.
In "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker, two sisters want the handmade quilt that is a symbol of the family heritage. Alice Expresses what her feeling are about her heritage through this story. It means everything to her. Something such as a quilt that was hand made makes it special. Only dedication and years of work can represent a quilt.
volunteering is important in the public sector because it helps the public services save money other than the military as the military reservists get paid but it is still voluntary. I got all my information from the websites which are for the organisation. the benefits of volunteering are:
Hills Like White Elephants displays the differences in the way a man and a woman view pregnancy and abortion. The woman looks at pregnancy as a beautiful aspect of life. In the story the woman’s pregnancy is implied through their conversation. She refers to the near by hills as elephants; "They look like white elephants" (464). She is comparing the hills to her own situation, pregnancy. "They’re lovely hills. They really don’t look like white elephants. I just meant the coloring of their skin through the trees" (465). Just as the hills have their distinct beauty to her, she views pregnancy in the same fashion making the reference to the hills having skin—an enlarged mound forming off of what was once flat. The man views pregnancy just the opposite. When the girl is talking about the white elephants and agrees that the man has never seen one, his response is, "I might have, just because you say I haven’t doesn’t prove anything" (464). This shows the defensive nature of the man, and when the woman implies the he is unable to differentiate between what is beautiful and what is not.
Why I want to volunteer I am directionless. Lost in a sea of people; people who all seem to know what they want to do with their lives. Volunteering can help me find a direction, a path that I want to be on. Assisting patients and workers provides more information on working in a hospital than any course or the internet can provide.
Ray Bradbury grew up in Waukegan and in Los Angeles, where he founded a magazine called Futuria Fantasia while in high school. He sold his first short story when he was 21 years old. His early stories were published in pulp magazines, but Bradbury later published stories in such mainstream magazines as The New Yorker, Mademoiselle, and the Saturday Evening Post. His science fiction and fantasy short-story collections included 'The Martian Chronicles', 'The Illustrated Man', and 'Dinosaur Tales'.
Kim, in the United States, grades are not the only factor in evaluating school applicants and job candidates. From Rhodes Scholar selections to college applications, excellence in other areas such as leadership, volunteer activities, sports and arts is equally important (p82-90). In American schools, students are encouraged to do volunteer work. So much so that many schools have guidelines for how much time students are expected to spend serving in the community. Children learn the value of giving from an early age. Volunteer activities is one way Americans feel a part of things and share the goal of serving and contributing to build their communities. From neighborhood watch programs to environmental issues, Americans do not wait for the government to initiate action: they take action to bring about the changes they desire. Therefore, Americans view volunteer work as a way to teach children and young adults values such as cooperation and teamwork, dedication and work ethics, equality and social justice, leadership, generosity and compassion for
When a person contributes to their community, they gain more than a just a sense of accomplishment. The experience a person gets in return from helping the community is invaluable. It is a mutually beneficial experience. A person who helps those in need gains knowledge and experience that can help them in future endeavors.
My main focus on volunteering is to help and/or improve other individuals lives. Whether it’s a small thing like shoveling elderly neighbors driveways during the winter or a bigger thing like running youth group at the local church and leading prayers. Not only do the people I help get joy from it, but helping others surely puts joy in my life too. Also, with the knowledge I have acquired through high school, tutoring others is something I enjoy doing because helping others understand something difficult is very important. During school, assisting teachers with going to grab printed papers or picking up excess garbage in the cafeteria after lunch are many of the things I do to improve the school and the people in it such as students and faculty staff. Like my dad always says, life isn’t about bettering yourself, it’s about offering your skills and traits to better the community and the people in
His family lived about four blocks from the Uptown Theater on Western Avenue in Los Angeles. That is the theater for MGM and Fox. He skated there and all over town. Bradbury was a big reader and writer when he was a kid. One of Bradbury's earliest influences was Edgar Allan Poe. When he was almost twelve he began writing scary stories and said he tried to write like Edgar Allen Poe for almost eight years. He read a lot of comic books and different genre books. When he was young he listened to the radio show Chandu the Magician.(biography.com)
Volunteering is an important contributor to our society. It is also a great opportunity to learn different skills, especially young people, and they will become a part of who you are. Your future employers will thank you for it, as will any college or university that you decide to apply too. It is also a perfect way for everyone to meet different people and experience different things. Volunteering not only actively will help people; it also helps the environment. Most of all, it allows you to become a better person for what you have
If we open our lives and give service to those less fortunate than ourselves, we allow our hearts to receive immeasurable happiness. When we sacrifice our time to help someone in need, whether it is a great or small need, we become a part of their life and can help alleviate heavy burdens. Making time to help people in need creates opportunities for us to develop new and lasting relationships. Serving our fellowmen allows the best in each of us to shine through and we can become examples to our children.
...teer experience. I highly recommend volunteering to anyone, because of all the great things it will teach and because of the positive impacts it make on one’s life. Volunteering will teach an individual many of life’s greatest lessons, and lets an individual grow into a better person. Volunteering teaches to let go of their ignorance and false notions of world problems and lets the volunteer learn about the real, and sometimes unattractive, condition of people in the world. Many people think that one person cannot make a difference in the world, but volunteering teaches a person to at least try to make a difference in one person’s life and to build on that. Additionally, volunteering teaches a person to be leader who can inspire others to volunteer. Volunteering is an incredibly didactic experience that will forever inspire the volunteer to be a better person.
A reflection of my volunteering experience can be summarized in two words: Life-changing. It is hard to explain the feelings that occur when you involve yourself in selfless acts for your community, such as volunteering. There is a feeling in your heart that you cannot ignore, maybe it is the happiness you feel or the overflow of emotions in helping others. In other words, it is a feeling in which you want to share with others. Maybe with a friend, maybe a classmate, maybe a family member, or maybe even a stranger. Either way, spreading how life-changing volunteering can be is a great start to making a positive change in your community by simply by involving others.
A common misconception about volunteering is that it only helps the cause. Often times that aspect is the only part that is highlighted when the topic of donating time comes up. There is a different side of volunteering though. Many volunteers donate their time to help better the community they live in and the people that live in it. When they choose to do this they not only help others but they are also helping better themselves. Volunteering benefits a person by building connections with peers, improving family life, expanding career skills, overcoming self doubt, having lasting life impressions, and creating new opportunities.
