Describe the students in the classroom: Ms. Parker’s morning pre-k class of 15 students started their day by working on a coloring sheet where they were supposed to color the rainbow in the correct sequence. This was a warmup activity. After the pledge, the students submitted their homework and sat on the rug for circle time. Students seemed fresh and ready to learn. They did their everyday circle time activities and as always enjoyed the matching number game the most. 2. Describe the purposes of the activity/lesson taught: The main activity that took place in this hour after the circle time was the group reading. Ms. Parker chose to read a book related to spring. As he started she asked students to explain what the difference between an author and an illustrator. Ms. Parker instructed them to follow the rule of raising hand and waiting for their name to be called. Ms. Parker overheard two students discussing something about boyfriends and girlfriends. Ms. Parker interrupted them and talked to the entire class in a very polite manner and told them that they are all just friends and there is not anyone’s boyfriend or girlfriend. Other than this there were not any problem behaviors observed. This class has always been well- disciplined during my observations. 5. What did you think about the teaching you observed? I really liked how Ms. Parker took her time to slowly read the book to the students. She deliberately spent 2-3 minutes on every page so that students can point out things and share opinions. At the age of 4-5 years, students are learning to engage in meaningful conversations, process information and express their opinions. Another good idea is have students create their own story through illustrations about friendship. This book is ideal for non-readers who are just beginning to show interest in reading books. They can read this story on their own without help from an adult. It could also be used for older readers who are working on building their skills in written expression. With this picture book, teachers can introduce the concept of helping students deal with disappointments in order to gain solving problem strategies for dealing with sadness, loss, and disappointment. This shows them that things usually turn out all right in the end.
Early childhood education, although constantly evolving, was actually established and practiced as early on as the times of Ancient Greece and Rome. This project focused on one first grade classroom. It was selected because the science teacher also acts as the homeroom teacher. As the homeroom teacher, the teacher spends an additional thirty minutes with this first grade class. Students see the science teacher during breakfast and morning meeting. The class then was able to have more time to discuss and review homework expectations. This homeroom has three Latin American students, one of which is an English Language Learner, and twenty African American students.
This particular class period consisted of around 3 students, but one student was working particularly just by himself with his teachers aid. Even before it started Ms.Metcalf classroom energy felt a bit off, and come to find out that during lunch one of the students had been teasing the other student. The student that had also been causing trouble had out of nowhere stolen paper clips off of Ms.Metcalf. The other student was not able to stay on task, because he still felt upset from the incident that occurred during lunch. This soon became more of a discipline class rather than the student learning about math, and apparently the "bully" had created pointer with the paper clips that could have actually hurt someone. Soon after Ms. Metcalf had to call the assistant principles to step in to discipline the student, and lost a entire day of instructions due to one student misbehavior. Preschool is a highly debated area of a child’s educational journey. One of the primary goals of preschool is to prep the child for traditional elementary school. There are various contemporary models of early education that have been constructed to help children develop their educational career. A few examples of these models are the Bank Street Approach, The Reggio Emilia Approach, The Montessori Approach, and the Head Start Program just to name a few. The Waldorf approach is the program of discussion in this particular paper. This semester I had the pleasure to be in Mrs. Smith’s kindergarten class at Normal Park Museum Magnet School. For the last four months I was able to observe and do a guided reading lesson. During this time I was able to reflect over what I have learn from Teacher Reading and connect it to what I have seen happen in my classroom during Guided Reading, writing, and reading. During Professional Development School I had the opportunity to see many different reading levels and see how my teacher taught her many different reading levels.
Have you ever thought for a while,” What is my favorite book that my class has read this year?” Well if you have ever read the book Wonder you would know what I mean when I say, I think Wonder is the best book we have read this whole year. When you sit and think, you realize so many things. The things I have realized is I connect to the characters, I love the humor, and the type of book it is.
Announcements signal the end of time to work on the bell ringer, and after announcements Ms. Schreyer leads the class in checking their work. After morning work is completed, the students begin their science block, then the students had their technology special. During this time, Ms. Schreyer had a planning period. When the students return from technology, a few students leave for a pull out emotional support class, a student from second grade joins the class, and the rest of the students have math class. After math class ends, the students went to lunch as I completed my time in the classroom. On Thursdays, I arrive a few minutes into math class, typically as they finished checking homework from the night before. I observed the remainder of the math lesson until it is time for lunch and recess. During recess most weeks, Ms. Schreyer's classroom was the workroom for students who did not complete their homework or lost recess time for whatever reason. From the moment I walked into the classroom, I knew Mrs. Shoemaker was going to be a great mentor to learn from. Mrs. Shoemaker was very intentional with explaining her reasoning behind all of her activities. Working in a fifth grade charter school classroom, there are many differences in instruction than a public school. It was interesting to learn the different regulations that are followed in this environment. To start off her day, Mrs. Shoemaker instructs the class to look over the objectives for the day which she writes new every morning. The first lesson is math.
