A topic we went over at the beginning of the course in chapter one was what really became a part of my everyday life. It covered smart goals, what to do during college, and what is expected of me after graduating from college. It covered the reasons for attending college and why it’s important for me. Smart goals really attached on to me as I started using them more and more. They got me on the right path to success, and help me realize what I needed to do to make my goals come true. The S stood for specific. Meaning a goal that has a result behind it, such as getting a 4.0 gpa throughout college rather than just saying I want to have a high gpa. M is for measurable. Measuring where you are and where you need to get to in order to achieve …show more content…
R for relevant meaning it should be related to my life or major. And lastly T, which stands for the time period you want to achieve this goal in. smart goals where a good way for me to organize my goals and find the best possible route in order to make them come true. During college you should be thinking of many things. One of is why you are going to college. As well as what you plan on accomplishing during your college experience. For example I am in college to further my education as well as major in biology, because I want to attend medical school. Something that has been a goal since I was only in first grade. In order to be successful in college students learn they need to change a lot of old habits. Especially there study habits. Many people, even me did not know the proper way to study for tests and quizzes. I …show more content…
I struggled through the first few months because I couldn’t keep you with my assignments. I always pushed them till the last day and was more interested in going to play tennis and watching videos on youtube. However I couldn’t bluff my essay for English and art like I thought I could. In high school I was able to write something up in a few hours, and still get an A. In college it’s a whole different scenario. I can’t write an essay that’s well developed and grammatical correct in a few hours. I kept that up for a few months until it really effected my grades. Afterwards I started going to the learning center to have someone edit my essay, which showed a great increase in my grades. Another struggle I had was in UNIV1000. I was horrible with weekly assignments, because I would always forget I had to do them on my own time. Until we learned in class to start using a calendar to keep track of assignments and important days. After that I stopped missing journals and was able to turn everything in on
Coming to college as an adult, we have many expectations and preconceptions of what college will or will not be. The expectations we have can influence our college life for the better or the worse. My experience since starting college has been an interesting one. People have misconceptions about college because they do not know what to expect. After doing some research, I have concluded that there are three major factors that are often misunderstood about college life. The first is the financial aspect of college. Second, is the relationship between the professors and students. Third is time management. These three factors play an important role in why people are afraid to go down the path to college.
Students entering college for the first time become concerned with their college life. The students are on their own once they enter college. There are no parents or guardians telling them when to do homework, when to go to bed, or how to eat healthy. These students are now responsible for how they are going to succeed in school and meet their own needs. From the beginning, these students wonder what their experience is going to be like and are they going to handle the demands of college?
Most people today think of college as simply a place to get a better education, or merely as a steppingstone to financial success. College is far more than that. College is an experience that shapes a person, which can have both positive and negative outcomes. It is all up to the students to make the college experience worth their time and effort. Students must realize the importance of the responsibilities now demanded of them by higher education.
When any adolescent enters High School they are still young and on the search to find themselves. High Schooler’s often make bad decisions, but quickly see that these mistakes there to be learning experiences rather than to dwell on them. Often, for many students, High School does not present an extreme amount of stress, rather it is a a place to learn more about yourself. Once college hits, stress is the only thing on the mind. College students are always worrying about if they did their homework, if they have a big test coming up, if they studied enough, and if they even have enough money to pay their bills. So the key to college is to know that the fundamentals of college are different than high school, be responsible and reliable to yourself, do all your homework, and most importantly be respectful to your peers and teachers
I have lost track of how long I’ve been doing this goal but I know that it has not been going well. However, I suppose that depends on perspective. As far as doing the goal goes, I’ve not been successful, but as far as learning from this experience, I have been extremely successful. I was supposed to be accomplishing a SMART goal. A SMART goal is almost like any other goal except that it is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. These five attributes are supposed to make any other goal better. They’re supposed to make any other goal more likely to be accomplished. So far, however, my goal has hardly been accomplished. My goal was to learn American Sign Language through watching the ASL discs I own every week until the end
College instills attitudes, skills and other characteristics that make college graduates different from those who do not go on to college. It will help the student develop skills specific to their career path and crucial for future job success
Secondly, the main thing is to be responsible and make the right decisions. In college you have to make decisions and it is hard. Peer pressure come in hard when you get to college, for example you could have a test that you need to study for and there is a party that you want to go to, and all of ...
I know that college will be challenging for me because I am a recent high school graduate and college is new to me. In college, many things easily distract me, but in high school, the teachers kept me on track. Now I have to do this by myself. In addition, college work is very difficult, especially when I have homework in every
The first step in reaching a long-term goal is to understand the S.M.A.R.T. goal process. Simply using the words specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound can be a bit confusing. After a bit of research, I was able to better define the method. Using a S.M.A.R.T. Goal worksheet provided by Tatt (2012), I was able to understand the definition of each word in the acronym. In other words, specific stands for the who, what, where, why, and when of the goal. Measurable is explained by asking how much, how often, and how many. Attainable asks if the goal achievable. Relevant is defined as how it applies to your ultimate vision. Finally, time-bound is a time-restraint you establish to complete the specific goal. Furthermore, there is a section for intention or in other words, the long-term goal (Tatt, 2012). By filling out this worksheet I was able to first state my intention and then break it down further into smaller specific goals that would eventually lead up to the final picture. By choosing just one specific goal at a time and achieving that success, it becomes much easier to complete your overall dream.
Goal Setting. In my organization for goal setting we follow the SMART method. SMART stands for S-Specific, M-Measurable, A-Achievable, R-Realistic and T-Timely.
...e very important. When these goals are specific, measureable, attainable, realistic and timely they are the most effective. When I set my SMART goal in order to increase my physical activity, the goal was to feel better about myself and to have a clearer mind so that I could do well with my studies this resulted in increasing my physical health and wellness. There were a few challenges of having to force myself to get out of bed even though I was feeling really anxious. I think when making a SMART goal and changing that particular behaviour there will be changes that need to be faced and overcome. These might include psychological, family and work commitments, health challenges and many other duties. Motivation and time management therefore need to be considered when making a SMART goal to make this possible and therefore can succeed in their new behaviour change.
One of the best ways to follow a successful path is to set goals for yourself. They are important to keep yourself on task and to get to a desired point of self fulfillment. The issue can be how to achieve goals in a successful manner. The issue is "Although people may desire or intend to attain some outcome, they are not committed to that as a goal until they are willing to invest affect, cognition, and behavior in attaining it" (Traci Mann, 2013). This is why it is important to have a set path on how to accomplish important goals. I have chosen three goals that I want to accomplish to demonstrate a Process known as SMART, to help accomplish them. There goals are that I want to finally earn a college degree(personal), I want to make it into the honor society while earning my degree(academic), and I want to earn my degree in order to contribute to Autism research(professional). All of these goals range in the amount of time it will take to accomplish them. Some are long term, but I can still use the SMART goal process in order to achieve them. The SMART steps to follow are:
Out of everything that we 've learned this quarter, goal setting was something that stood out to me. There are a few times where I set a goal in my head but end up never achieving them, wether it was something very simple or more of a long term goal. A technique that stood out to me in our notes is, writing down your goals. I don 't I 've ever written down a single goal that I 've had. In class and in our notes we talked about how it is important to write down your goals and how you cannot just write the general idea of your goal, but how you need to be very specific in what it is you want to achieve. I think that in college it 's very important to set long, mid, and short term goals because somedays will be harder than others and you need
It takes discipline to stay on track with online classes. I feel like I matured and grown into a better person by keeping up with my schoolwork. In week two, we learned how to make the most of our time by using a weekly timetable, daily to-do lists, and a master calendar. I use a weekly timetable each week to keep track of everything I need to complete so I do not get behind with my schoolwork. My second expectation for my first year in college was to stay motivated by obtaining good grades, and thinking about why I started college. I am proud that I earned good grades in my first year of college. Although the amount of school work I had to complete each week seemed overwhelming in the first couple of weeks of college, I quickly got better at managing my time during the week. My last expectation I had for my first year in college was to learn some of the interesting aspects of journalism that will be beneficial to me in years to come. I learned many beneficial things in the writing and speaking lesson during week seven. I learned the best techniques for getting started and writing a first draft such as free writing and brainstorming. Identifying the audience when you write is an important technique that writers must learn to do. One of the most important techniques every writer should know is to organize a paper into an Introduction, body, counterarguments, and conclusion. I learned how to complete a paper in APA format edition in my first-year experience class. Admittedly, I was nervous when I completed the Lassi completion and reflection video in week three. After I completed it, I gained more confidence in public speaking. I am proud of myself for exceeding my expectations for my first year in college. As I move forward in college, I expect myself to continue to work hard and obtain good grades. I
Everyone has goals, some are as simple as saying that you plan to wash all your jeans on Thursday. This is not a smart goal but it is a goal. SMART Goals are goals that are Specific Measurable Attainable Relevant/Result Focused/Realistic and Time-Bound. I believe that all goals should be SMART. This way you can create a step by step path on how
