In Chapter 5, “Getting Off to a Good Start, Emmer and Evertson assert that the major focus of the elementary teacher should be strengthening the students’ belief that school tasks are important and that the students’ can be successful at these tasks. It is important that teachers understand that classrooms do not magically become well-managed, rather teachers understand that the first few days of class will require explicit guidance and expectations of how students are to behave, interact, move, and perform within the classroom setting. Effective teachers plan for classroom management before actually beginning the school year and spend a significant amount of time ensuring the classroom management is understood by the students, generally accepted by the students, and practiced until they become routine. The first week activities should focus on the whole group and not small group. Specific activities for the first week of school should include a discussion of classroom rules, procedures, and routines. Personally, my first week activities involve modeling the use of the classroom behavior management system. As the students become acquainted with the rules and procedures, and demonstrate understanding by doing, I utilize the Class Dojo system. As students meet expectations throughout the first days of school, (or do not meet expectations) they are awarded DOJO points immediately. As students obtain points in increments of 10, they are immediately rewarded openly by being allowed a trip to the Treasure Chest. Communication is the key to any successful profession. A lack of understanding due to miscommunication to lead to harming the business causing losses. In the case of a physician – patient relationship it is not just the revenue that is effected but also the health or even life of an individual depends on effective communication where both parties understands each other.
As a teacher in training, I have very limited in-classroom experience and depend heavily on the expertise of professors as well as a variety of books and articles published on education. I am convinced that a learner centered approach to instruction is of fundamental importance and that it will inform most teaching decisions I will need to make to become an effective educator. Knowing as much about the students before school even begins will help structure the content material and guide the instruction methods. Along with this, knowing what the school provides in terms of environment and materials will help formulate a plan to give students every possible opportunity for achievement and success. Wong (2005) defines classroom management as “all of the things that a teacher does to organize students, space, time and materials so that student learning can take place” (p. 84).
... Junior Achievement. My mom volunteered for Junior Achievement 2nd grade last year. She said the children looked forward to her coming every week. She would take donuts every week. She said they were excited to learn and by incorporating the “treats” it motivated them to learn and try harder.
The article defines Self-Efficacy (SE) as a person belief in his/her ability to perform a particular behavior successfully. Researcher suggests mothers’ self-efficacy (MSE) can be directly linked to the increase or decline of a child language development (Albarran & Reich, 2013). This theory is explored by observing 2 factors, perceived barriers and parents’ knowledge and exposure to reading material concerning child development. There are 3 barrier discussed in these article’s. Parent centered barrier looks at the particular situation that would prevent or in decrease a parent from interacting with a child i.e. being too tire, having to work, or just being too busy. Child –centered barriers focus on the child lack of interest in any particular task i.e. being fussy, tired or just not being interested. The last barrier is structural; this particular barrier looks at environment factor that should possible effect (MSE) i.e. nosy back ground, and little exposure to reading material (Lin, Reich, Kataoka, & Farkas, 2015).

Good morning teachers, faculty, administrators, family, friends, and of course students. It is a great privilege to be standing here today and representing our class on our eighth grade Class Day. Can you believe it? Four years ago, most of us walked into this school as nervous as we were the first day of school. We were the tiny fifth graders, the youngest students in this middle school, not knowing where anything was and how to navigate the school. Now, those same four years later, we’re leaving this school behind to a whole new school being just as nervous as we were when we first arrived. It has been a long four years as well as a short four years. Long because of all the tests, quizzes, finals, and projects, but short because of the lifelong friendships, the lasting memories, and the truly interesting and amazing things we learned in-between. The Abington Heights Middle School is definitely a welcoming, fun, memorable, and great school that I will never forget. These four years spent with these wonderful classmates has been an extraordinary journey with many cherishable memories.
My personal philosophy of classroom management focuses on creating an environment where children feel safe and where they feel like they belong. I will create this environment for my fourth grade class through making my expectations of the students clear while developing an engaging lesson plan and personable interactions with my students. I developed my philosophy from studying different theorists and based my philosophy on the theories of Glasser and Kounin. Glasser believed that the teacher’s roll in the classroom is that of a leader rather than a boss. He believed that students should be given power in the classroom and that the teacher should share it with the students. I will use his ‘7 caring habits’ specifically supporting and respecting to help my classroom feel safe and welcoming to my students. Meeting the individual needs of my students will be the focus of my classroom management routine. I will meet individual needs by promoting self management and self efficacy in my students by creating an environment that that has predictable and consistent daily routines while focusing on my student’s successes (Shindler, 2010). Having a predictable routine will encourage a success oriented environment and will reduce anxiety and help towards creating positive self efficacy in each of my students (Shindler, 2010). In Glasser’s Choice Theory he talks about focusing on the present and not bringing up the past (Glasser, 2010). Motivation is defined as the process that initiates, guides and maintains goal-oriented behaviours. Motivation is what causes us to act, whether it is getting a glass of water to reduce thirst or reading a book to gain knowledge. Goal Setting is where we set specific targets aims that we wish to achieve, they need to be S.M.A.R.T or else they become dreams rather than believable goals. .
My classroom set up, will be a warm classroom setting. I will let my kids pick their own setting arrangement the first day, and that will be there permanent seat. I will only change the seating if the kids start to act up, which gives the kids responsibility to take care of there seats. My rules in the classroom will be to get your work turned in on a certain date that I set, to be respectful of me when I am trying to teach the class, and to respect the kids and the things around them. I want to keep my classroom simple so my kids can learn to the best of their ability.
Classroom management has the largest effect on student achievement, so students cannot learn in poorly managed classroom. Additionally, research has pointed out that the quality of teacher-student relationships is the main aspect of classroom management.(…2). Furthermore, when teachers set classroom management plan, the plan will give structure to everything from seating to lessons to grading to the relationship between students. This I Believe Philosophy statement will include my thoughts and beliefs about classroom management with comparison to other theorists’ models. The major theorists that will be mentioned are Barbara Coloroso, Linda Albert, and Lee & Marlene Canter. I highly agree with the Canter’s and Coloroso’s models of classroom management because it best fits my personality as an individual teacher. I believe that an affective classroom management plan is first practiced and then modeled for improvements. My ultimate goal for my Classroom Management Plan is to model self-discipline by teaching it through my daily actions so that students may be able to self-manage themselves accordingly.
I believe Classroom Management is the main component in the educational setting. I believe if students are in a safe environment, then learning can take place. This doesn’t mean punishing behavior problems but rather a combination of setting the tone in a class, preventing behavior problems with interesting and engaging curriculums and effectively including all students in the classroom so that their needs are met. Having the right environment for all students to learn is my major goal of implementing good classroom management--without it the students would not be able to learn.
My classroom management starts with a well-organized, clearly labeled classroom layout so that my students can easily access the resources they need for my class. I display visual aids and reminders around the room to support the students and I display their work in specific places around the room to give them a sense of belonging. I create routines and procedures to support the students and enable them to form smooth transitions between activities. There is a certain way they enter and leave the classroom, distribute books and papers, and move their desks and chairs. In my classroom these mundane tasks are completed quickly, competitively, and with enthusiasm. Having routines in place helps students understand exactly what is expected of them and gives them confidence in their actions.
