Interpersonal Relationships In a world where the reign of complexity rules with the strongest of influence, our ability to communicate with one another allows us to solve even the most difficult of situations. Even so, human beings take communication for granted, we possess the ability to communicate instantly from across the globe and in real time, we can alert others of danger within a minute 's notice, and keep our governments in check. Yet, we squander and misuse our communicative abilities to gossip about celebrity drama or the nonsensical events that take place within our society. These relationships help manage our emotions through constant interaction and provides an open line of communication whenever or wherever it may be needed. However, this poses a question; can humans survive without interpersonal relationships? We worked together and completed our task with ease while also strengthening the bond we share as friends. According to the article, “Interpersonal attraction in exchange and communal relationships.” The group I befriended “will continue to deliver the correct response to the given situation” (Clark, Mills: 1979). Although we share different opinions and the language barrier may get in the way of some aspects of overall communication we persevere as a group and as a team. We do not let our differences define us as we do not allow them to influence the bonds we develop, instead we deal with them and accept each other as is. One instance was when we discussed the presidential race and the wellbeing of our country. A member of our group supported Donald Trump while I and another member supported Hillary Clinton. Through a very long and gut wrenching conversation we settled our differences and opinions and agreed that we are all in for a nasty and unsatisfactory victory regardless of who wins the race. Communication is the foundation of any society. Humans are interactive beings that must communicate in order to survive. Humans develop communication skills as infants; learning to yell when something is needed, cry when something is painful, and smile when feeling happy. As babies age they learn words; eventually learning to compose sentences allowing them to express their feelings or desires. Humans finally learn to communicate within different parts of their life with different forms of communication such as letters, spoken, visual, and more. As one ages, they become aware of the different rules of communication used with certain people and situations; such as learning to speak to a teacher in a different manner than how one talks to their friends. While doing this, people are unconsciously starting to learn how to conform in the different discourse communities. Discourse communities are an essential part of life, and learning to communicate in those communities is just as vital.
Miscommunication is a struggle that lives within the world everyday. Being able to understand what another person is trying to convey is an essential part of the way humans interact with one another. When a message is not translated correctly from person to person conflict arises and heated battles rage within a relationship; whether it is a mother and daughter, or two quarreling lovers, or strangers upon the street. Interpersonal therapy (IPT) is designed to treat disorders by focusing on interpersonal relationships and other factors that bring about interpersonal problems. It is a time-limited psychotherapy originally meant for the treatment of major depression (Klerman et al., 1984). Following that, IPT is also used to treat a good number of psychotic disorders namely bipolar disorder (Franketal.,2005), dysthymic disorder (Markowitz,1996), bulimia nervosa (Fairburn, Jones, Peveler, Hope, & O'Connor,1993), binge eating disorder (Wilfley et al., 2002), social anxiety disorder (Lipsitz, Markowitz, Cherry, & Fyer,1999), panic disorder (Lipsitz et al., 2006), and post traumatic stress disorder (Bleiberg & Markowitz,2005), among other disorders. It is a 12-16 weeks long therapy program, usually accompanied by monthly maintenance IPT treatment, starting out with identifying the main interpersonal problem (ie. grief, role transition, role dispute or interpersonal deficits) which will become the focus for resolution throughout the treatment. IPT is distinct from other psychotherapies, like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) due to its change process. The central change process occurs in the interpersonal context, and not in the patient. The 'medical model' illustrates this concept whereby the patient takes on a 'sick role', and current problem is externalised. The interpersonal conflict revolves around my mother and I. We have always had a strong relationship but lately, have been at constant odds between each other. There is conflict between us because of our conflicting views on whats the better option for our beloved dog. My mother will always hold the power most of the times by default, she is my mother after all, but when it comes to this specific interpersonal conflict, I certainly hold the power. Other family members know of this dilemma as well including my grandmother who is just as conflicted as my mother and I are. My grandmother has a strong attachment to our dog and would effect her emotionally.
The emotional barring that a positive relationship can have profound effects on a student’s output. Hughes and Chen, 2011, as cited in Liberante, L. (2012) states “Teacher-student interactions influences… student’s academic outcomes and behaviours. Supportive and positive relationships between teachers and students ultimately promote a sense of belonging” (p.278). Through the use of a positive student-teacher relationship, a student’s output can increase dramatically and the emotional benefits can give a student a sense of worth. Another vital part towards a successful student-teacher relationship is how teachers can fulfil the expectations set out by their students. Reitz, T. (2001) “Students identified many qualities they feel necessary to have a positive relationship with their teachers… The first quality is the establishment of rules… Another quality is respect… The final quality is the emotional connection that students want to make with their teachers. This includes the teacher sharing personal information about themselves” (p.107-108).
