The novel Divergent by Veronica Roth, has many dystopian elements. In divergent, the problems are created because of the elements of Dystopia. There are many elements that are present and are created through out it. The society is somewhat corrupted ande that makes it non-perfect.
Thare are many elements of dystopia in divergent. Propoganda is one element that is used in this novel. It is used to control Tris and convince others that the soviety is good. For example, everyone believes that you are better off in your assigned faction than being factionless. Many characters feel like there would be nothing to live for if the society wasn´t divided into the five factions. Because being united is the best thing that could happen.
Another element
in the book is that information, independant thought, and freedom are limited or restricted. This element is used a loth in the book. People are not allowed to be with other people that are from any other factions. Tris went to go see Caleb and she got in trouble for going to a different faction. You are expected to act the same and have the same lifestyle as everyone in your faction or else you will get kicked out. In divergent, citizens often feel like they are being watched or under surveillance. Many of the faction leaders look or moniter faction transfers to see if they are doing everything right. Tris feels like she can´t be herself because the leaders will find out that she is divergent. For example, Four says to Tris ¨They are watching you. You in particular, be careful.¨ All in all, I think that divergent is a dystopian novel. The elements of dystopia can be found through all of the book. There is also a lot of evidence that shows how this book could be distopian. I think that this dystopian novel would be great for everyone to read. It is centered around all of the issues in distopian societies.
Dystopias in literature and other media serve as impactful warnings about the state of our current life and the possible future. Two examples of this are in the book Fahrenheit 451 and the movie The Truman Show. Both works show the harmful effects of advancing technology and the antisocial tendencies of a growing society. The protagonists of these stories are very similar also. Guy Montag and Truman Burbank are the only observant people in societies where it is the norm to turn a blind eye to the evils surrounding them. Fahrenheit 451 and The Truman Show present like messages in very unlike universes while giving a thought-provoking glimpse into the future of humanity.
No matter how they are told or expressed, most dystopian stories have several similar assets. They are usually made to be unique, however there are usually numerous links between them. The book Brave New World and the film “The Island” are prime examples of this statement. A few similarities include the actions of hypnopaedia, forbidden love and affection, and un-natural births.
Dystopia represents an artificially created society to where a human population is administered to various types of oppressions, or a human population lives under the order of an oppressive government. The novel Fahrenheit 451 and the film V for Vendetta both effectively display this dystopian concept in their works. The nature of the society, the protagonist who questions the society, and the political power that runs the society are examples of how the novel and the film efficiently capture the main points of a dystopian society. The authors of the novel and the film use their visions of a dystopian future to remark on our present by identifying how today’s society is immensely addicted to technology and how our government has changed over the past decades. Furthermore, the authors use our modern day society to illustrate their view of a dystopia in our
The Hunger Games and Fahrenheit 451 are both great examples of dystopian fiction. A dystopia is a fictional world that takes place in the future that is supposed to be perceived as a perfect society, but it’s actually the opposite. Other things that a dystopian society might display are citizens both living in a dehumanized state and feeling like they’re constantly watched by a higher power. Dystopias are places where society is backwards or unfair, and they are usually are controlled by the government, technology, or a particular religion. The Hunger Games and Fahrenheit 451 are both in the dystopian fiction genre because the societies within them show the traits of a dystopia. Both of them also have characters that go against the flow of the normal world.
The Divergent Series is a novel by Veronica Roth that is set in a sort of dystopian future society that in actuality is Chicago that is being used like a type of experiment. You basically get sorted into these groups called factions where you will live out the rest of your days. But if you choose to leave you will become factionless which is the equivalent of homeless presently. You take a test to decide which faction you are best suited for. Once you have chosen you go through an initiation process. If you choose the faction you weren’t born into you can’t contact anyone from your old faction.
The novel starts out with Tris and her brother Caleb preparing for their aptitude tests. This test shows them (or at least is supposed to show them) which faction they belong in or where they fit in. Tris’s results come back inconclusive, therefore she is divergent, and her results are manually recorded as Abnegation. Divergent, according to Merriam-Webster dictionary can be defined as “differing from each other or from a standard.” In the novel, when someone is “divergent” they fit into multiple of the five factions. They do not conform to only one of the five standards. This forcing of choice causes them to conform to the patterns of a specific lifestyle even when if it means not being completely true to whom they are. Specifically in Tris’s case, she fit into Dauntless (the brave), Erudite (the intelligent), and Abnegation (the selfless). By choosing Dauntless she had to suppress her intelligence and ignore the intuition to help others, which in the end proved to be a difficult task.
She is successful and ranks first. She slowly realizes that in the excitement of the day, the Dauntless leaders have again exercised their power by injecting a serum in members to fight Abnegation for them. This again shows the corruption of total power in society leaders. Realizing the control over fellow Dauntless members tris gets Four and they set out to reverse the serum and fight the simulation. The story continues in Roth’s second book of the Divergent Trilogy Insurgent. Divergent has been well received and in a review given by The New York Times, Susan Dominus wrote that it was, “rich in plot.” Common Sense Media commented on the book’s “deep message about identity and controlling societies” and on its unstoppable
Throughout 1984 and Divergent, conformity and obedience force the characters to go to great lengths in order to follow the basics and rules of the government. Throughout Orwell’s 1984, the individuals of the society hang onto every word, law, and thought of Big Brother. The citizens focus primarily on the Ministries and Party, not forming connections or relationships with others. Each member of a party have certain jobs and clothing assigned to them, separating them for others to easily detect. The same concept lies within the factions of Divergent. Each faction has a different job, and different colors to wear in order to display their role in society. The leaders of each Faction also hold the phrase “faction before blood,” depicting the same messege Big Brother enforces in 1984. Both governments want the individuals to stay within their parties, and do the jobs assigned to them. However, both novels include characters refusing to conform and obey to government rules. In 1984, Winston Smith resents Big Brother, using his knowledge from the Minitrue to reveal the lies the government spreads. Because of the disatisfaction Winston shows towards his government, O’Brien follows him, tortures him, and brainwashes him into conforming like the others. In Divergent, the government leaders label Beatrice Prior as a “divergent,” or one who possesses more than one
The Divergent is a wonderful novel, written by Veronica Roth, that highlights the problems that power-hungry leaders cause by utilizing its wide range of characteristics and personalities. The characters live in a normal environment that is controlled by many leaders. It reveals how closely related it is to real life. Several other characters evolve into this state of selfishness that causes them to endanger the society.
The Divergent series by Veronica Roth centralizes on a society with faction, separating every person by their personality. There are 5 factions, Erudite which is based on intelligence, Abnegation which values the need of others above the needs of oneself, Candor which value honesty, Factionless which are the people who don’t fit in anywhere, and there’s Dauntless, who are considered the strongest soldiers of all the factions. These factions represent the city of Chicago, since Chicago is the only state that survived a war and the people there are the only people who have survived the war nobody knows anything outside of Chicago they have been locked in there for years. There is also a faction that doesn’t quit exist, people feel threatened
Bravery is crucial for survival in this world. When faced with daunting tasks, it is human bravery that pulls one through their fears. This is why it is such a highly prized feature in Dauntless. Veronica Roth created five factions: Amity, Abnegation, Erudite, Candor and Dauntless, each with one prized quality, in the novel Divergent, focusing on the most daring bunch. It is in the defending faction of Dauntless– meaning to show fearlessness and determination– that bravery is top priority. Dauntless, fearless, brave…these are three keywords that guide the plot of the novel and the lives of many. Throughout Divergent, one Dauntless member, Tris, overcomes fears and obstacles, illustrating Roth’s theme that bravery gives the power to conquer.
Beatrice Prior lives in a future version of Chicago where the people live in 5 distinct separated factions. Each faction has a different purpose and way of living. Dauntless, dangerous and protective, guards the city from the unknowns of the outside world. Erudite, smart and cunning, develop the city’s high-tech medicines and technology. Abnegation, selfless and caring, is responsible for taking care of the factionless and running the city’s government. Candor, always honest, provide the judges and lawyers for the city. And last but not least Amity, loving and peaceful, run the farms on the outside of the fences that surround the city. The Prior family belong to the Abnegation faction, and Beatrice has been taught her whole life how to be selfless and caring. When the children of this town turn sixteen they go through a special test that tells them which faction they are most suitable for. Most people only get one result from this test but Beatrice’s test stated that she was aptitude for three factions: Erudite, Abnegation, and Dauntless. This is very rare, but there are some other people like her. They are called Divergents. The day after the test there is a choosing ceremony where the children pick which faction they would like to be in. If they pick a different faction than what their family is in they are “shunned” and hardly ever see them again. Beatrice chooses the Dauntless faction and her family, and most of the town, is in shock. A faction transfer from Dauntless to Abnegation is almost unheard of. But choosing Dauntless is not all the initiates have to do to get into it. All new Dauntless initiates have to train and compete to become a member of Dauntless. One Dauntless tradition is initiates can chan...
If I were to be born into a specific faction, I believe I would most likely relate with the Dauntless group. This faction believes in its members being brave and showing random acts of bravery with everything they do. This includes standing up for other people and also standing up for what you believe in and what you know is right. The Dauntless manifesto states, “We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another… We believe in shouting for those who can only whisper, in defending those who cannot defend themselves.” My parents’ leadership roles throughout their lives would wear off on me and I believe this is the faction that I most likely would be born into.
The novel Anthem by Ayn Rand and the movie The Hunger Games directed by Francis Lawrence and Gary Ross are popular among teens because they can relate to them by the high expectations put upon them. In a dystopian novel or movie, there is a dystopian protagonist. A dystopian protagonist is someone who often feels trapped, struggles to escape, questions existing systems, believes or feels as if something is wrong in the place they live in, and then helps the audience realize the effects of dystopian worlds. These are both good examples because it takes us on a walk through the protagonist's life and only then do we see what dystopian really is.
Divergent, the 2014, action, sci-fi film directed by Neil Burger presents viewers with a futuristic dystopia set in Chicago. After a large war, society has been divided into five groups of people called “factions”. Each faction has their own specialty they are responsible for in order for their society to function properly. Abnegation is the selfless, Dauntless are the brave, Amity are the peacemakers, Candor are honest, and the Erudite are the Intelligent. When a member of society turns sixteen, they are required to take an aptitude test that will tell them what faction they are best suited for. After the test, they are free to choose to stay in the faction they have been in since birth or join any faction of their choosing, but once the choice has been made, there is no going back. After we are introduced to the main character, Beatrice Prior, we follow her into the testing room where she is told that her test was inconclusive, meaning that she does not fall into one specific group in the faction system. She is classified as Abnegation, Erudite, and Dauntless, making her divergent. Because of this, she is faced with the problem of hiding her true identity and blending in with the faction she has chosen to live as, so that she is not killed as a threat to society and the faction system. After she is given her test results, Beatrice makes the difficult decision to leave her family who are Abnegation, and join Dauntless. After she makes the choice to become Dauntless, she is faced with unexpected physical and psychological challenges to be fully initiated into the faction, as well as learning of Erudite’s plot to kill all divergents and overthrow Abnegation in order to take over as head of the government. Although viewers are prese...
