Jasper Jones is a coming of age novel that the author Craig Silvey has set in 1965, in the small town of Corrigan; thick with secrecy and mistrust. Charlie Bucktin, an innocent boy at the young age of thirteen, has been forced to mature and grow up over a life changing, challenging summer. With a little help from Jasper Jones, Charlie discovers new knowledge about the society and the seemingly perfect town that he is living in, as well as the people that are closest to him. The most important ideas and issues that Craig Silvey portrays in Jasper Jones are: coming of age and identity, injustice and racism. These themes have a great impact on the reader. While discovering and facing these new issues, Charlie and his best friend Jeffrey Lu gain a greater awareness of human nature and how to deal with the challenges that life can throw at you. One of Silvey’s major ideas in Jasper Jones is coming of age and identity; in this case, Charlie has been thrown into adulthood and forced to grow out of his immature, fearful self. During the novel Charlie starts to mature, show bravery and stand up for himself. This turn of events occur because Charlie chooses to help Jasper: “But I don’t turn back. I stay. I follow Jasper Jones. And I see it. And everything changes. The world breaks and spins and shakes.” (pg. 12). He made a choice between doing what was right and what he thought was fair. He knew Jasper would be immediately blamed for the death of Laura Wishart. The night Laura Wishart was found dead, Charlie changed as a person: he started to see everything in a different light, even his home life. He also makes a life changing decision and rebelled against was he thought was the right thing. This reflects his maturity and bravery throughout the journey he travels that summer. Charlie eyes suddenly become open to the injustice that the town of Corrigan demonstrates. He also comes to face the issue of racism; not only shown towards his best friend Jeffrey and the Lu family but to Jasper Jones as well. He realises the town of Corrigan is unwilling to accept outsiders. Charlie not only finds out things that summer about the people that surround him, but he also finds out who he is personally. These novels are also the novels that the author, Silvey read that had influenced his writing of the book. These novels shaped the way Charlie thought and how he reacted to certain events through the novel. Often he would refer to a character in one of these books, like Atticus Finch – “What would Atticus Finch do?” Charlie Bucktin. The thoughts allowed Charlie to better handle the situations that he and Jasper were placed in throughout the novel and the different circumstances that affected him. The lack of proper detectives and the absence of modern technologies such as DNA testing, affected how Jasper and Charlie dealt with Laura’s murder, from the beginning of the novel. Through his eyes, we are able to see racism and segregation in the Corrigan community at the time and how Charlie makes sense of all of it. Charlie is still coming of age and through his moral and educational development in the novel Charlie starts to understand what his position is in the community, as well as his relationships with people. Charlie is not subject to racism, but his friends are which enables us to see just how racism worked and how people’s ignorance ignited it. Silvey is using Charlie to teach us to look past labels and to make our own judgment on someone not just by their reputation or appearance.
Duncan Schaffer and Lorraine Quarrles represent all that wrong with Charlie's life. Charlie attempts to steam forward and like a anchor they keep him moored in place. I can not truly sympathize with Charlie though there is a sense of empathy within me. I sense that with Lincoln Peters also.

It follows the life of Charlie Bucktin, a thirteen year old resident of Corrigan, a rural mining town in Western Australia as he matures into adulthood. In order to protect Jasper Jones, the town’s ‘troublemaker’, he helps Jasper to dispose the dead body of Laura Wishart, the missing daughter of the shire president and struggles to keep this dreadful secret. Power relationships in this novel have been reflected, reinforced and challenged in their own context and my personal context through various narrative conventions. Racial power has been reflected in the text through the context in which the text is set. Sexual power has been reinforced in the contemporary context. Furthermore, in both the text’s context and my context, the idea of political power has been challenged.
The novel ‘Jasper Jones’ written by Craig Silvey and the film ‘Dressmaker’ directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse have connected to the audience in very similar ways. The main ways that they have done this is through plot, characteristics and setting. By looking into each of these conventions it will widen the knowledge and have deeper in-depth on how authors and directors use them.
Soon however, Charlie would encounter challenges he never faced with the intelligence of a 6 year old. Before his surgery, Charlie had great friends in Miss Kinnian and the bakery workers. After the surgery, the relationship between Charlie and everyone he knew would take a drastic turn. A growing problem for Charlie’s is his extremely mixed emotions toward the opposite gender. In the final stages of the film we are brought back to the small town introduced to us in the beginning, this time, however, it is in morning for a beloved son. Charlie's death has brought Graham back to Young Charlie. We can see the good side has won the battle for her. As in early situational Charlie has learned her moral lesson and the episode may end.
Charlie struggles with apparent mental illness throughout his letters, but he never explicitly addresses this problem. His friends make him realize that he is different and it is okay to be different from everyone else. This change in perspective gives Charlie new opportunities to experience life from a side he was unfamiliar with. Without these new friends, Charlie would have never dared to try on the things he has. His friends have helped him develop from an antisocial wallflower to an adventurous young man who is both brave and loyal. Throughout the book, many of the situations that Charlie Cullen placed himself in showed how his personality has changed throughout time. As a child it seemed like everyone in the family had a problem, a mom who died while he was young, exposed to drugs

Throughout the movie, he spoke in a low voice. Especially, when discussing past trauma. Charlie's affect was limited/restricted and reported his mood as depressed because he did not know how to make the pain stop. He appeared to be experiencing anxiety and slight agitation. There were no signs of physical abnormalities. Also, resident was cooperative with the exam conducted by the Psychiatrist. Charlie presents as depressed as evidenced by, not sleeping much, but when he does he sleeps too much. He has a loss of appetite and is socially isolated from kids at school. He is alert and oriented times 4(person, place, thing, and time). He was able to sufficiently answer questions and recall most of his past. Some difficulty arose in memory when he tried to remember the past trauma. Insight is considered fair. He is aware that there is an issue that needs to be addressed. The resident has not indicated experiencing any hallucinations, hearing voices, delusions, etc. Charlie has had suicidal ideations as evidenced by thoughts of inflicting harm on himself. He does not feel the urge to harm other individuals. The resident has been unable to control anger at times as displayed by fights at school and withdraws from others in public settings. This is evidenced by sitting at the lunch table alone, and while attending sporting events not knowing how to appropriately respond to
Charlie could have been a lot happier if he didn't get so worked up over situations that didn't necessarily matter that much. In most of the letters that he wrote, there were always lines that stated "I walked home and while I walked home, I cried." "…I started to cry. It was real and panicky, and I couldn't stop it" (Chbosky 136). There were many sentences that were along those lines. He was nervous about high school too, and he started the book going into high school as a freshman. Every freshman is nervous for the first day of high school, so he was overdramatic in the way that he felt like he was the only one who was nervous for the first day of school.
