A quote from American singer Carl Perkins has said, “If it weren’t for the rocks in its bed, the stream would have no song.” I am those said rocks. Metaphorically speaking, a rock is a strong, independent, and reliable object. They are settled and stern in their standings not to be budged by the weak or strong of influences. I have been through various changes and several conditions, yet I have not changed my view on life or my path to the goal. I have gone from a tiny pebble to a boulder, I am still building my way up, making myself stronger, becoming less impacted by the smaller less important things. I continue to work my way up to eventually become a mountain, that is the goal, to be more powerful and reliable each and every day to build myself up to be a pinnacle upon the earth. Rocks are able to be reformed to make …show more content…
They can also be developed in nature to be astounding works like canyons, bridges, or mountains. I have become many of these myself. When I was young like a small pebble I had little if any purpose for my life, I didn’t have a plan or direction of how I wanted to continue it. However, with some help and influence, I have been shaped to the magnificent piece I am today. One might glance at a rock and think there is nothing special about it, most are gray and dull in appearance, but there are those special cases when the rock is explored and investigated to discover a whole new and interesting inside. Geodes are those rocks, upon a first glance they seem very ordinary, but as soon as you crack them open you are exposed to another experience entirely. I as well seem very ordinary when looked upon from the outside. Once you get to know me and explore what I am like, I reveal extraordinary qualities. Other rocks like coal seem useless and black in appearance, but are used to light the world and give warmth to those in

Richard Taylor, an American philosopher and author of, “The Meaning of Life” believes you can live a meaningful life as long as you realize your will and are completely involved in it and enjoy it, then you are no longer needed and your life was a successful one. “This is surely the way to look at all of life- at one’s own life, and each day and moment it contains; of the life of a nation; of the species; of the life of the world; and of everything that breathes” (Taylor p 27). He proves this through the ancient myth of Sisyphus. Sisyphus was sentenced by the Gods to spend an eternity rolling a stone repeatedly to the top of a hill and once it reached the top, it would roll right back down once again. Taylor calls Sisyphus’ life as an “endless pointlessness.” Taylor relates human life to Sisyphus’ life. He believes that both of our lives can have meaning. Taylor asks us to look at Sisyphus’ story in a different way. For example, while the Gods sentenced him to rolling this stone up a hill for an eternity, what if they gave him a “strange and irrational impulse” to roll the stone repeatedly. Now, according to Richard Taylor, Sisyphus’ life would now have meaning and if we were to be as invested as Sisyphus in rolling the stone, then our lives have meaning as well.
In his essay, “Upon This Rock,” John Jeremiah Sullivan details his journey as he explores the biggest Christian-rock festival in Pennsylvania-Creation- and encounters Christians whom he centers his attention on for the duration of the festival. Darius, Jake, Josh, Bub, Ritter, and Pee Wee, the six Christian youth Sullivan meets, explain to Sullivan the situations that prompted them to follow a religious path. The boys explain that “half of their childhood friends had been murdered- shot or stabbed over drugs or nothing”; (Sullivan 21) in turn, they found Christianity as a means for “God [to take] all that anger and stuff […] away” (Sullivan 21). Eventually, Sullivan reveals that he was once a born-again Christian, an Evangelist; however, he
Throughout the decades the face of rock music has changed drastically because of a series of small events that have occurred for example, the song that saw the birth of early rock music The Comets hit Rocket 66 a 50's classic that endeared audiences with its atypical crunchy guitar tone, this was brought about by Ike Turner who dropped his guitar amplifier outside of the recording studio causing the amplifier to break and distort the sound this small accident caused Rock and Rock if we fast forward around 20 years and you have a young man called Tony Iommi working in a steel factory in Birmingham when he loses concentration severing the tips of two fingers causing him to de-tune his guitar to make it playable for his injured left hand and this spawned the birth of Heavy Metal music or is this all just a music purists point of view? or is there more to this than the cute stories and our perception that all of these outcomes could have been predetermined by previous events? could it be that we as listeners, consumers and human beings have manipulated the evolution of rock music to suit our personal tastes to feed our hunger to feel at one with the music? which leads me to authenticity. A few aspects of the criteria for music to be deemed authentic can be broken down into two main categories these are what sub genre of rock music is it and how is it related to its social class and the common behaviour within that class, for a quick example if The Sex Pistols famed for their bond with the working class turned round only to sport a posh upper/middle class accent would they have been billed as the working class heroes? or would they have been merely cast as posh boys playing loud music but with nothing to shout about. The genres of mu...
This paper is an analysis of the grunge movement, an exploration into genre classification, audience and artist identity and how it is related to media and cultural capital. This paper will also highlight the vast difference between literary perception of the movement (analysis and articles written about grunge) versus the perception of inhabitants of Seattle that witnessed the grunge movement as it happened (extracted from interviews in the grunge documentary, Hype!).
To many Rock musicians who have helped popularize Rock in the more modern era, they describe rock as having a blues genre mixed in it. It is characterized as music with heavy beats and melodies when it first started to come up. It is also described as Black Rhythm, blues, and country white music. These bands usually consist of a guitar, drums, bass, and keyboard or their instrument that gives Rock it’s uniqueness. It is generally based on twelve-bar blues, and the first and third beats are heavily accented.
...g.” Getting to the top of the mountain could be metaphorically interpreted as accomplishing a goal. There is a point in life when you have to decide for yourself what your course will be in life. You should not just go through the motions of life. It is always important to set goal and have a purpose. It also important to give anything you are doing one hundred percent of your effort all of the time. The feeling you get when accomplishing a major goal is a feeling that is indescribable, it is just so rewarding.
2. What is the difference between a.. Describe the “rockabilly” sound pioneered by Sun Records in the mid-1950s. The term rockabilly has been used to describe a type of music that was very unique and without a doubt one of the most influential genres of music in the development of rock and roll. Dating back to the 1950’s, Rockabilly was a new and interesting form of music.
Music has always been an important part of my life. During high school I have developed areas of service and leadership through interests in children and gardening, which will continue to be major parts of my life.
Our entire lives have been shaped by the events happening around us. Along with us many factors in our day to day lives have evolved too, including musical genre. One such genre is rock. Rock is a genre for the youth, by the youth, it has evolved to stay with the times and stand up for what’s right. In this essay I will prove why rock is a good example to show how genre has been defined, maintained, constructed and negotiated through the past 60-70 years since the very first Proto Rock song came out.
Throughout my life, music has always been a major influence. It has the power to change my mood when I'm feeling down, but the thing I find most intriguing about music is that it doesn't always end up improving your mood: like all forms of art, it imitates life, which is not always portrayed in a positive light. The musicians that I admire most have the versatility to induce several different emotional responses in the same piece. This quality is present in most of the wide variety of music I listen to, from Russian composer Dmiti Shostakovich, to Chicago jazz band Tortoise, to California pop/rock sextet Mr. Bungle.
What does music mean to you? Music is something that has been around for many years. It started out as just some drums and a few instruments, but has changed a lot over time. The dictionary defines music as “an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color.” When I think of music I think of it has a story combined with instrumental sounds. Over the years, it has changed so much, some for the good and the bad. There are many different types of music and different emotions it will bring.
Simon and Garfunkel were just those kinds of poets. Their words were able to stimulate an emotion with most of their readers. Simon and Garfunkel are one of my favorite artists, and in my opinion one of the most influential lyricist of their time. In their song, “I am a rock”, they are able to make you feel and question for someone who avoiding emotional attachment, and instead of questioning what it might be like, using their words to but you in their place.

...me would be a tree. We start off as tiny beings, and we begin to grow and depend on our roots. Bending at fierce winds and standing straight rooted to its chosen place showcases a tree’s strength. When faced with challenges, I stand with my head up and stick to what I hold most valuable. We learn through falling and standing and observing the situations that pass us by. Every tree has a purpose, whether it’s providing oxygen, giving shelter, or helping others. A tree does not die without serving its purpose. Even after death, a tree does not leave the face of the earth without leaving a token of its existence. It leaves behind a stump, which symbolizes its legacy. I plan to leave behind a legacy or a stump on this earth. My stump will simply symbolize “Jasmine was here.” Like a tree, my magnificence will be something the world holds in great value and appreciates.
