What My Catholic Education Means to Me My Catholic education means a lot to me. If your beliefs are included in everyday life and tasks, your faith in God grows stronger. You will practice your beliefs to help you get through moments in your difficult emotions, thoughts, and problems in life to get a better solution and answer. When God is in your heart, anything can be achieved. A Catholic education helps you understand how God will help you in times of need and that He will always be there. It helped start new beginning in our faith every time I made a mistake because I know God will always forgive me. It has helped me in countless ways. My Catholic education is a path to God, freedom, and nourishment for my soul.

Since I can remember I have always heard that knowledge is power. No wonder my parents went far and beyond to ensure I had the opportunity to attend Saint Mary’s. My parents believe knowledge is powerful when obtained through a Catholic education. Thus, I understand the intent of Saint Mary’s University in developing God’s gift of knowledge with a mind of my own. The Saint Mary’s University liberal education will affect the growth of my own mind and soul which will allow my never-ending pursuit of knowledge.
A well-rounded education is very important and much supported. Two supporters are John Henry Newman and Paulo Freire. John Henry Newman was a professor at Oxford University and an Anglican minister that converted to Roman Catholicism and became a Pope. He delivered several lectures in Dublin, Ireland, about the importance of a Catholic education. These early lectures on education were revised and published in The Idea of a University. One of those lectures, “Knowledge Its Own End,” is about two distinct kinds of education (Austin, 53). Newman believed that there was a need for education purely for pleasure and education that is needed to pursue a specific career. Paulo Freire is a Brazilian literature professor and philosopher. The desire to further education is essential because it expands the mind of a person. College is implemented to attend a school for four plus years and hope to get a job after graduation. Without higher education there would not be any scientist or engineers in the world to continue to make society run smoother. However, it’s actually more than that, it creates long term friendship and builds independence.
After reviewing all the issues studied in this course, the one area where I feel most confident, and would therefore call the "easiest issue" is in the area of Catholic identity. Studying at Marymount has allowed me to deepen my understanding of Catholic identity, and that understanding conforms to the discussion of Catholic identity found in the Handbook of Research on Catholic Education (Hunt, Joseph & Nuzzi, 2004), where identity is included in the theology that makes Catholic schools Catholic (p.31). Simply put, Catholic identity emerges from the theology of Catholicism and the truths taught by the church. College education is a great tool for our self enhancement. It even exposes us to the values and cultures of other places and people. Subjects like history, anthropology, comparative religion, international politics, and humanities can make us much more accommodating and sympathetic to other cultures. This results in a better bond among international communities. By learning about others values, we could be able to contribute to sound political, business, or economic decisions. Math and science classes in college are also very beneficial by giving us basic skills to run the accounting of our life. Studying math can help us become good engineers, architects, or bankers. Studying science can lead us to being able to contribute to the advancement of technology and medicine.
It is easy to think college is not worth the cost to become better, but getting educated molds a better person, and creates happier people in the future and occasionally they become better in health (Leonhardt 25 ). Becoming a better and happier person is pleasing for everyone. Even former President Obama says “‘Education helps us be better people. It helps us be better citizens. You came to college to learn about the world and to engage with new ideas and to discover the things you're passionate about -- and maybe have a little fun’” (Procon.org). Learning and engaging in everything is a skill everyone should have, so like he said we should go to college to be able to do that. Additionally, education shows people to develop more intellectual skill and become more responsible (Pew Social and Demographic Trends). Thus said, being educated and smart is something everyone can do and college helps with that. Likewise, college can encourage someone to be more educated and happier. Reaching the point of happier and more educated is worth the cost.
I learned several things from the Catholic Intellectual Tradition that make Fr. Malloy’s statement true. One of these, is the affirmation of liberal learning by encouraging us to be intellectually curious and to be life long learners. I have applied this in my life, not only religiously, but also academically and emotionally. We are encouraged to keep on exploring and challenging ourselves and the society we pertain to; hence, simultaneously impacting our world through exploration and new challenges. This course helped me flourish spiritually, it definitely challenged my views on certain topics, and allowed me to understand others’ perspectives in a safe environment.

A higher education trains them by better placing those students on a higher status in society, and consequently will help the economic growth. College students also learn to understand the world around them. Educated individuals know when it is the best time to state their views aloud and when it is better to stay quiet. A higher education embraces the ability to find out what is relevant or irrelevant in a situation. Students learn how to communicate, treat people with different beliefs, and interpret their opinions. They cannot be easily fooled by others who use manipulative language. In other words, a higher education will create a better and more organized society, which will benefit the present students and future generations.
Very important to my life after completing my education is having a family. It is my dream to become happily married and have children. Family has always been a great part of my life, and I wish to be a loving husband and parent. I am also looking forward to raising my children in the Catholic faith.
Higher education in the United States arose as an answer to the need to train clergy for the seminary. Throughout the centuries, higher education has evolved to become one of the principal means in educating individuals in specific areas of study. Individuals seek higher education to become more proficient in a particular occupation, area of study, or as a requisite for employment or advancement in specific fields such as engineering, management, or the sciences. The benefits that individuals who attend institutions of higher learning realize are more than education; the benefits are numerous and consist of socioeconomic benefits as well as personal benefits for the scholar, including income benefits, employment advantages as well as personal advantages.
Religion is commonly defined as a group of beliefs concerning the supernatural, sacred, or divine, and the moral codes, practices, values, institutions and rituals associated with such beliefs (Wikipedia, 2006). Most of the major religions have evolved over the centuries into what they are today. In many cultures and times, religion has been the basic foundation of life, permeating all aspects of human existence (Fisher, 2002). Religion is passed on from generation to generation. My religious beliefs were passed on from my relatives on my mother's side. My family has believed in the Catholic faith for many generations. Since I grew up in the Catholic faith I went to Catholic schools my entire childhood. My personal experiences and the Catholic faith made me into the person I am today. Without a religious upbringing I feel that there would have been something missing in my life.
Education will help you grow as an individual because the more knowledge you have the better understanding you will have in any given problem that will come your way. It will give you self satisfaction and will boost your self confidence. As an individual I know it will help me in a lot of aspects in my life. It will give me a financial stability because I will be able to land a good job and a high paying salary. I will learn how to spend my money and will learn how to invest it wisely. The more education I have the more respect and acknowledgement I will get from people. Knowledge is really important that is why we need to take it seriously. It is the strong weapon you can have to conquer this complex world. If you have a good education nobody can fool you and you will not tolerate any mistreatment from people. It will give you a better views in life if you are well educated.
School had a large impact on my life. Until I was eighteen, I did not experience education in the traditional sense. My homeroom was my bedroom; I had economics in the kitchen and science class was often held outside. I studied the usual subjects: math, reading, science, history, and English. I also studied some non-traditional subjects: Bible, canning, sewing, and cooking. My mother taught me to love reading. My father taught me how to find answers to my questions, and my siblings taught me how to explain concepts in a way they could understand. Being taught at home offered me experiences that I would not have received if I had attended a traditional school.
Education is not just what your major is, it is also what you learn along the way. It's about learning about life and who you are. All the while becoming specialized so that you may contribute to yourself and society. It's a journey, and for those of us fortunate enough to embark on that journey I hope that we make the most of it.
