This project changed my idea of what it means to learn because if you asked me what ur means to learn a month ago, I would say a teacher teaching me a concept and then I show them I understand by taking a test or doing a project. Before this project, learning was the equivalent to memorizing since I learned in school and then had a test, I didn't think it showed much usefulness other than I had to get a good grade. I thought to learn was to get information that you may like or not and put it to use. I have math, and socials this semester, for math all I get taught is equations and I solve problems, and for socials I do writing assignments. Doing this project showed me how to get more creative and think outside of the box. This said, I can learn …show more content…
I had to study by searching up how to write an impressive short story, and when I was finish writing a page, I would re-read it, so if I was the reader I can image the scene and make sure it is perfect (no grammar nor spelling mistakes). I found out by doing this project is that I don't have to go to school to learn, there are plenty of other ways, such as finding a new hobby, or trying a new recipe since you would gain a skill. To learn is associated with being boring or dull, but this past month has shown me that it doesn't have to be, I can make learning enjoyable or interesting by finding my own way to understand and use information I get taught. I had never thought this month would change me the way it did, it opened my eyes in expressing myself and to have fun with the whole concept of …show more content…
School is seen as, you go into class, take notes, study then take your test, even I thought about school this way (ironic since I want to be a high school teacher). Even thinking this way, I still found it exciting and pleasurable to attend school since I get taught new information, am one step closer in becoming a teacher and get to socialize with others. Unfortunately, it wasn't all beautiful, school was challenging at times and in order to get a good mark in class, you would have to memorize what you learned which was good in way. By doing this project, I didn't have to memorize anything, it was relaxing, but tested me at the same time which was amazing. This project had made me put school into a different light, it wasn't that dreadful as everyone thought it it to be and the teachers were always there for you when you didn't understand a concept. There was still a big workload, but I would have lots of time to finish it, not to mention, the work wasn't that harsh since teachers would give us homework about something we learned about. For example, this project, I wrote a supervillain story in high school, I used Adobe Illustrator to help me draw Eve 2.0 (one of Thana's robots) and Thana's logo, I had already used Adobe Illustrator, so this project was
In addition to this, I feel that my Team building class gave me good insight into the inner workings and mechanics of how teams work. More work.
In Matthew Sanders, “Becoming a Learner: Realizing the Opportunity of Education,” he teaches the readers that there is much more to college than the basic material in which we learn. We should approach our college education with an optimistic view on learning both who we truly are, as well as the material for specific job skills. Matthew Sanders states, “I am suggesting that you be more concerned about who you are becoming as a learner rather than about the specific job skills you may be acquiring.” It is vital to our growth in our educational studies. There are so many opportunities that come our way during college.
...use of this issue. Even I prefer learning for my own pleasure over school work, but this competition is what molds students into high-achieving individuals. Having to work up to a deadline, conducting research, and collaborating with peers for group projects are all necessary tasks in the "real world". It is true that success can be achieved without school, but school is only one of the many pathways an individual can choose in order to become educated. School provides students with the ability to strive in the real word by providing them with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed. When asked what I am studying for, I can say that I am studying to become someone who can make a difference. I may not enjoy the stress and anxiety that comes with school, but I cherish the fact that school is providing me with the knowledge and skills I need to further my dreams.
Matthew L. Sanders discusses the necessity of taking responsibility for one’s own education in a section of his book Becoming a Learner: Realizing the Opportunity of Education. In this section, Sanders explains how he initially blamed an instructor for not teaching him sufficiently and then learned that “No matter what kind of teacher you have, no matter what kind of class you are taking, if you are a learner you will set out to understand the material and create opportunities for success.” This statement is true and the concept can be applied through many methods to create success for students if they are willing to put forth effort.
Finally, I learned how to be more responsible by myself. In my last classes, my teachers were technically always there to tell me step by step what to do and how to do my assignments. In a certain way, it made me kind of lazy and entirely dependent of my teachers. However in this course it was not like that; instead, my instructor just gave me the assignments, instructions, and deadlines, and I must write my essays and summited it on time. This absence of guide absolutely made me to react that it was time to me to do my assignments by myself, demonstrate what I know, and ask for help just whenever it is
I left that project feeling extremely aware and extremely at peace. After three years of struggling to find answers, happiness, and a sense of purpose, I began to appreciate my present state of mind. I began to revel in the struggle, confusion, and push of not knowing. And as I approached graduation, my high school experience suddenly made sense to me. I understood life as a system of games. High school was simply one of them. I came to realize that playing games was both understandable and necessary as long as we are aware that we are playing them. I realized that a major struggle throughout high school had been my struggle to resist playing its game. I spent my three years at boarding school governed by my passions rather than playing by the rules of the institution. And in refusing to play by its rules, I made it increasingly more difficult for me to function within its realm.
Essentially, this project taught me about social media advertising, as well as advertising in general. It taught me how to create a comedy album, from the set-up, to the event itself, as well as post-production. This project gave me a very well rounded experience that will help me in many of my future endeavors. I feel that very few people can say that have a knowledge like this, and I think it will prove to be beneficial in the future.
I think the project that most impacted me as a learner was the memorial project. This projected made me grow as a learner because I had to work with someone that I had never worked with before. When we started just getting a topic that we both wanted to do was the first thing that made me realize that this project was going make me need to use and learn some new skills. My partner and I had some trouble with trying to come up with a design to show everything we wanted to show for our topic. We had to be patient with each other making sure the we both listing to each other and understanding what and why they wanted to do this. We also has some trouble with communication because we didn’t completely understand what the other wanted making ti hard to finalize our design. Another thing with communication was who was doing what my partner didn’t always know what to do so we would sometimes end up wasting time trying to find something for her to do that she wanted to do. Communicating was something that I really improved on for this project teaching me how to be more specific with what I say so that we don’t get confused later. Over all I think that this memorial project as the one that made me use more of the learner profile skills then any other and helped me improve one one as
According to Byman and Kansanen (2008, p605) ‘… teaching in itself does not imply learning’. The underachievement of young people in education has been a priority in British politics for over two decades (Ross, 2009). The estimates of academic underachievement at Key Stage 4 (KS4) are reportedly between one fifth and one third of the KS4 population in England (Steedman and Stoney, 2004). An Ofsted (2013) report identifies that pupils’ aged from 11 to 16 (early KS4) is below the national average. Underachievement in KS4 has become a recurring phenomenon (Wogboroma, 2014), with several academics and government bodies, identifying a range of significant implications, not only for the individual but also for wider society (Beinart, et al. 2002; McIntosh and Houghton, 2005; Hosie, 2007; Ofsted, 2013; DfE, 2014). This unseen cluster of learners that are academically underachieving is representative of an objectionable waste of potential, in addition incurring subsequent costs, from an individual viewpoint to a national scale (Ofsted, 2013). Consequently, recognizing and instigating timely interventions to tackle underachievement in KS4 and subsequently achieve social justice for this learner group should be a fundamental goal for schools. Motivation is recognised as an effective tool to overcome underachievement (Mega, et al. 2014) Furthermore, the intrinsic loci of motivation has developed to become an important phenomenon for educators, as it produces high-quality and effective learning in addition to creativity and achievement that can be progressively nurtured by teacher practices (Ryan & Stiller, 1991). Theories of motivation, self and society are critically evaluated to determine effective strategies...
I have learned several valuable things from this project experience. First, it’s okay to not know how to do something right away. Ask, observe and experiment. Doing so will greatly enhance my ability to do it correctly and continue to learn. Second, I learned that this can be an experience in frustration if I always try to not make waves. Sometimes waves need to be made to better the project. And third, watch for similar frustrations with my students and intervene before it gets too serious.
In ensuring that genuine learning transpires in the classroom, there are various issues that educators must concern their selves with. Understanding and responding to these issues require extensive knowledge of various theories in education as well as in the application of such theories. One such issue which is the focus of this paper is that on how learning occurs. Student learning is the primary goal of any academic institution, and leading students to achieve learning is the purpose of every educator. However in order for teachers to be able to lead students to learn, it is only logical to consider that teachers must know how learning actually transpires. Towards the goal of helping teachers develop a strong understanding of the different theories that attempt to explain how learning occurs in an educational setting, Marlowe and Canestrari (2006) present excerpts from the writings of different educators and education researchers which explain the dynamics behind being able to learn. These include the work of B.F. Skinner on behaviorism, of Bandura, Ross, and Ross on imitation of aggression models, of David Willingham on cognition and memory, and of Witte-Townsend and Hill on relational consciousness. The importance of these theories on how learning occurs is expounded on by Sontag (2009) in her discussion of learning theories that are applicable to students in the 21st century. According to Sontag (2009) being able to explain how students learn take teachers is a critical step that an educator must make in order to be able to help students learn. By understanding the mechanism involved in the transfer of information from the lesson to the student, teachers would be able to modify the learning environment and their own teaching ...
I think that most of the gear I have lost has maybe not been lost in the sense that nothing of its sort is in my life anymore, but rather it has been transformed into something else. Ignorance has been made into knowledge. Naivety has been made into wisdom. I think that throughout this year, I have learned how to handle stress and time where before these were some things that I struggled with. I learned that college is not a time to invest in my future with just academics, so this idea was tossed aside. Rather, college is a time to invest in my future, but through a plethora of means, in which my academics is contained. Along with that, I realized that building relationships and building myself are just as important. A side lesson that I learned that stems from building myself and relationships is to be more open-minded. This year, I have felt challenged to expand my mind intellectually, emotionally, morally, and philosophically. Where once I was unwilling to go, I am now liberated and feel no barrier in my way. I feel as though experiences such as the trip to Temple Israel were chalices through which my expanded mind has been served. Now looking back, I see that I can have a more grand aspect on different topics that have stumped me before. I also see that I am not alone in this journey to find answers to questions and meaning to actions. I am among a throng of peers that I may trampoline off of into enlightenment and once one of us has reached that place, then we may haul the rest up as
Over the course of the semester, I have learned a few things about myself. I have learned that I can be independent, I always knew myself as someone who could do mostly everything on their own. This semester really made me realize how independent I could actually be. Not only have I learned how independent I am I have also realized the importance of time management. With not having a strict class schedule it was a lot different than what I was originally used to. After a few weeks, I learned ways that would work best for me, for example writing down that I needed to get done. I learned that I need to focus on what 's ahead of me to accomplish what I want to succeed in, to manage what needs to be done ahead of time to stay caught up.
I was born and brought up in India. I went to catholic English medium school. I did my bachelors in India and for further studies came to United States. My twist starts when I wanted to change my study plans from doing masters in pharmaceutics to pharm.D. However, when I applied for pre-pharm I had to wait for one whole semester to get enrolled in the classes. Questions were arousing in my mind, what should I do for these six months. Should I go back to India and come again? Should I travel some places? I have to study the whole pharmacy again, and I have to wait for one semester to start it. What should I do? Multiple questions and the answer was Intensive English program (Iep) at University Of Mississippi.
