Education is concerned with developing the person. Character education promotes especially human traits: courage, mindfulness, ethics. So a vital foundation for character education is establishing a firm idea of what it means to be human. However, the notion of what it means to be human is changing. Our existing cognitive and physical capacities can be augmented by new technology in exceptional ways. Conventional limits to perception and performance may no longer persist. What does that mean for our idea of what it is to be human? What does it mean for character education? Will the future of human augmentation bring more benefits to our society? Or will it result in more drawbacks? There has always been attempts and undertakes to enhance human capabilities, but it hasn’t prohibited us from striving to be more courageous …show more content…

It is tempting to ask “what demands are made of character when everyone has superpowers?” In my opinion, it is beneficial for people to have a greater range of capabilities, but we don’t need to be a society of superheroes. Failure means letting technological capabilities lead the way. Human augmentation through technology can be a good method for medical purposes, but there needs to be regulations if it is used to a point where it robs us of character and our human identity begins to erode. There should be “widespread independent consultation and investment into research principles” (technologyreview.com). While there are research leadership in multiple countries, we must to much more to acquire a clear sense of the global implications of human enhancement and formulate a reasonable strategy for managing it. It is unlikely to stop the growth and spread of technological advances, so in turn we must work to control and handle it in a way that benefits our society more instead of being a detriment to human
