Hard Work: A story from in and out of the workplace. In today's society, there are many jobs that require many individuals to successfully complete. Some work better than others and achieve more. What does it mean to be a hard working individual? This essay will explain this through the questions of what, why, and how? What does it mean to be a hard working individual? In a summary, it can best be put as someone who is dependable, maintains high productivity, and has a good positive attitude. Being dependable means showing up to work on time as well as making sure you have transportation. Showing up late to work can usually result in termination if it occurs too much. Being a hard worker usually means making more money which could lead to a better future down the road. Job benefits are another advantage. These usually consist of insurance plans that are offered from the job after a certain period of time has been spent there. There are also retirement plans that help put together a savings account for retirement in the future. Job security is another reason as jobs will want to keep the hard workers in place instead of others that might not want to work as hard. The last reason consists of being promoted. Promotions in the workplace are usually given to workers that have exemplary work performance because moving up requires more work to be done than the previous
It is safe to say that work comes in many different forms. Whether it be a fast food or a corporate, the people that surround an individual make a great impact on the way he or she may work. Singapore, by Mary Oliver, is about a young woman working as a custodian in an airport who although works alone, enjoys her work and the people she meets. Dorianne Laux’s What I Wouldn’t Do, introduces another young woman reviewing the jobs she has had throughout time and reflects on those that she liked and disliked. Hard Work, by Stephen Dunn, exemplifies a young boy working in a soda factory during his summer break. Searching for happiness in life and work is just what these individuals are doing.
The motivation to be successful is very powerful. Some people will work twelve hours a day, seven days a week in order to feel successful. These people will work so
There are a lot of reasons motivating people to work, such as their happiness, interests and self-esteem. However, it is important that jobs can influence people to keep their ambitions to achieve their goals, to satisfy their basic needs and to focus on one thing with their passion. Florence Nightingale gave up financial support from her family since she had an ambition to improve England’s medical and healthcare environment in the 19th century. And during my high school, “my job” offered me a suitable chance to reach my aim, too. In “Workers” by Richard Rodriguez, undocumented physical labor who comes from Mexico works in the U.S. to earn money for their basic needs. Furthermore, in Carl Rowan’s short story, “Unforgettable Miss Bessie,” Miss Bessie, a high school teacher with a plenty of knowledge, uses her passion to educate Africa American. According to these three people and me, jobs are so important for everyone because people need some ways to satisfy their ambitions, money for basic needs and passion on doing something.
In life everyone grows up trying to decide what to do when it comes time to take on a job or a career. They take in factors of what would make their friends and family proud of them, or what kind of job to achieve to make them seem vital to society. In both Charles Finn’s essay “The Dignity of Work” and Alden Nowlan’s poem “Warren Pryor,” they go into the different aspects of how “work” is viewed. They also point out a very important lesson that people should do what they enjoy in life without regard of others expectations.
A positive attitude is, after all, absolutely necessary to achieve success since it influences the outcome of a task more than any other factor (Jacobs 2016). Jane Satrom definitely fits the bill when it comes to having a positive attitude. During her first year as a teacher, Mrs. Satrom recounts having two students who tested her patience and good heart. The two African-American students “accused [her] of being racist” and were constantly going to any possible extent to “get [her] off topic so they [did not] have to work” (J. Satrom, personal communication, September 27, 2016). This was barely the beginning of Mrs. Satrom’s career and she was already facing difficult situations on the job. However, although she “drove home, crying, many a day, over those two” she kept her positive attitude and moved on. This is a prime example of the correct way for someone to handle an obstacle they
Reliability is doing what you say you are going to do, when you say you are going to do it. If someone is reliable, you are able to depend on him or her at work or school. Working with someone who is reliable is working with someone whom you trust versus working with someone who is not dependable.

These points are just three of many that could be used to describe a hard worker, they are the three that I fell are the most important. Throughout my life, I have strived to be a hard-working individual when it comes to school, my job, and family work. I always try to work quickly and efficiently, and make my work the best that it can be. Perfectionism is a major part of my life and that is one of the driving forces behind my hard work. Sometimes the drive to be perfect can limit my results, but I try my hardest to keep it from restricting me. I always give one hundred percent when it comes to completing various tasks, and find pride in being a hard-worker.
Hard work is challenging work. But why does it have to be challenging work? Because challenging work, when intelligently chosen, pays off. It’s the work that people of lesser character will avoid. And if you infer that I’m saying people who avoid challenging work have a character flaw, you’re right… and a serious one at that. If you avoid challenging work, you avoid doing what it takes to succeed. To keep your muscles strong or your mind sharp, you need to challenge them. To do only what’s easy will lead to physical and mental flabbiness and very mediocre results, followed by a great deal of time and effort spent justifying why such flabbiness is OK, instead of stepping up and taking on some real challenges.
Another reason may also come from an employee getting a good, decent salary. This not only improves the job satisfaction, but gives the member of staff an understanding of the fact that they get fair payment for their labors. “[But] if an employee does not get satisfaction in their work, they may seek satisfaction in other work unrelated areas. He or she may also be content with work as it relates to those work-related areas. Job dissatisfaction may also cause an employee to quit” (Robbins).
