In evaluating myself as a leader I have found that I have many weaknesses that need to be improved upon before being able to lead effectively. This may because I have never really been in a position of leadership, subsequently falling into a follower’s role most of my life. Even though I am not comfortable in a position of leadership, I do exhibit many of the strengths that good leaders need in order to succeed. I have recently been through an abusive situation and I hope that I will be able to use my education, knowledge, and compassion to help others out of harmful situations. I will be able to do this with the law degree that I have been working towards for the better part of the last five years. For most of my life I have been floundering because I have never really been passionate about anything other than sports (soccer) and learning. Most of my free time is devoted to one recreational sport or another. While I love sports I have never envisioned myself coaching outside of the developmental girls soccer team that just moved on to the competitive leagues. I had a difficult time coaching because I had difficulty expressing myself. Therefore, I do not feel that sports are my calling in life outside of recreation and enjoyment. In reflection I do hope that my educational path combined with my recent experiences will help me to use what I have learned to help others. I have never really had any direction in life, even though I feel that I have the potential to achieve whatever I set my mind to. Thus I have struggled with finding a career that I love. While law school has been my focus, I do not know if it’s because I truly want to be an attorney or if it has finally given me a focus and goal to work towards. These traits have helped me to accomplish many career and educational goals as well as helped me to develop long lasting relationships that have sustained me up until the last year. It seems that hard work and determination are essential in accomplishing almost any goal that a leader sets their sights on. It is my hope that these characteristics will help me to persevere through the difficult times that life and school will thrust upon me. Thus I hope to use my strengths to help me steer the course of my educational and personal goals thus learning how to lead others and myself through turbulent times with grace and dignity. Consequently, my biggest weaknesses and hindrances in leading myself and others are my stubbornness and hesitation to recognize when I am wrong. Good leaders need to know when to admit they are wrong thus allowing them to reevaluate the situation and ask for help if needed. It seems that effective leaders know where their weaknesses lie and can ask for help when needed. This helps them to effectively achieve tasks leading towards long term goals because they know what they can and cannot do. According to Grossman and Valiga’s Leadership Characteristics and Skills Assessment, the interpretation of scores for perception of what makes a good leader gave me the following results: good perception of a good leader and the scores for perception of your own ability to lead resulted in low perceived leadership ability for myself (Grossman and Valiga, 2013). Reviewing my leadership qualities, I realized that my existing leadership qualities are same with some leadership traits of Mycoskie in the Big Five Model. Two of my existing leadership qualities is integrity and dependability. When I make a commitment to someone, I know I am able to fulfill it and willing to put in extra time and efforts to accomplish commitment. For example, I promise to become an assistant guitar teacher in the summer course in church every year.
The idea of what makes an individual a good leader; a manager or a worker is generally based on what are his/her perceived strengths. In Clifton and Nelson (2010) book “Soar With Your Strengths”, the reader is encouraged to focus on their strengths rather than their weakness to excel in school, in business, or in the workplace (p.19). In an organizational leadership role, management must understand the strengths and weakness of their subordinates. Successful organizations identify and improve upon their strengths. Simultaneously, effective leadership also acknowledges the existence of weakness while effectively isolating it. More often than not, unsuccessful organizations fail to achieve success because they focus on their faults rather than their strong suits.
What is a leader? In times of crisis the ultimate survival of a group depends on the leader, or person who steps forward to take control, direct others, and maintain order. Although in today's society people are judged based on their appearance, yet looks have no influence on whether or not a person is capable of being a successful leader. Instead, good leadership is based on the individual skills and traits that the person possesses. The characters Ralph, Jack, Simon, and Piggy in William Golding's Lord of the Flies are perfect examples of people who may not be the best looking physically, but who despite this have the superior qualities to be an excellent leader.
Being a leader you need to be in tune with your talents, strength’s, and weaknesses. Personally I feel I have many skills and talents. I am a great friend, I’m trustworthy and dependable. Every leader must be able to accept the fact that they are not perfect and each person has things that they exceed at and things that come with a bit of difficulty. I do not see myself as being outstanding in a certain area but I do think that one of my talents is adjusting to change. When I came off to college I did miss my family a lot, but I kept myself busy by being more outgoing and finding new/different things to do. In order to lead people in a positive direction you need to be able to relate to them on a more personal level. It is much easier when people feel comfortable around their leader. I always like to lend a helping hand or even a shoulder to cry on when it is needed. My strengths include integrity, optimism, faith, innovation, and adaptability. The general personality traits, which are related to success both in and outside the workplace, are all inherent in my answers given in the Leadership Assessment Quiz. With statements such as, “it is easy for me to compliment others” and “team members listen to me when I speak,” it is apparent I possess these characteristics. Whereas my task- related personality traits associated with successful leadership, such as courage, still need to be developed. Not only do I know this in myself, but it is clearly pointed out throughout the test, with statements such as, “resolving conflict is an activity I enjoy” and “I would enjoy coaching other members of the team”.
Traits of a good leader are trustworthiness, respectfulness, honesty, and be stern. When you have leaders that take their role seriously, you can form a backbone to an organization that cannot be broken. You have born leaders and you have trained leaders. Martin Luther King was a natural born leader for the Civil Rights movement. King saw there was something that needed to be changed and he took the steps to change the world.
Although I have many core values, including diligence, happiness, helpfulness, true friendship, freedom, and intelligence, the most significant in my life are love, morality, honesty, and forgivingness. Throughout my life, these particular values have proved key to becoming the person I wished to be. “The term leadership involves our self-images and moral codes” (Values in Leadership). In order to lead and to be someone who upholds their values, one must be fully aware of what is important to them and what drives them.
I think this is an issue because although I do enjoy motivating others, I need to ensure that I am providing positive feedback, not to forget the negative because as humans there are always certain aspects that we can improve on. I want to ensure that others do not feel criticized or afraid to provide me with constructive criticism on my work ethic and my leadership style itself. Another one of my weaknesses I would say is that I have a tendency to express my views very strongly sometimes coming off as arrogant when I am in a group or leading a project, I want to manage this weakness by ensuring that when I am in a group I immediately ask my other peers for feedback on the statement I just provided because this will allow me to know what their thoughts are and how they view my perspectives. Another one of my weaknesses is I have a hard time accepting change. For example, I need to learn how to cope with change and realize that not everything I engage in or work on will always go my way because others will have different perspectives and they will not necessarily agree with my ideas all the time. Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. Being part of groups in university for class presentations, being the organizing secretary of my campus fellowship, being a youth leader in my church and the church admin, also being part of a family. Leaders are charismatic, inspirational and trust worthy. I have gained some important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. There also different contexts of leadership, e.g, leading oneself, leading other individuals, leading groups, leading organizations. Some traits that are often associated with being an effective leader include a measure of intelligence, high energy, self confidence, dominance, and a need for achievement. An effective, charismatic leader must lead by example. That leader must be able to know what is going on, the job or task that is being accomplished, and be able to lead the group into performing the task at hand successfully.
I fall into a unique, more introverted and innovative personality type. Generally speaking, leaders are often expected to be extroverts. That seems to be the societal ideal. However, there were some well known introverts such Einstein, Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela that obviously were successful leaders and innovators with a mission that suited them.
