While in jail, Martin Luther King Jr. wrote a letter confronting criticism written by the clergymen. The clergymen were telling King not to protest, King led a protest and was placed in jail because, he didn't have a permit. The clergyman said that he was "unwise" and "untimely". While writing his letter, Martin Luther King uses rhetorical devices. For starters, Dr. King wasn't an outsider; he was well known. He was the president of the Southern Christian Leader Conference with different denominations and he was invited to Birmingham. The letter says "...Birmingham asked us to be on call to engage in a nonviolent direct action program if such were deemed necessary." He believes he isn't just anybody coming to Birmingham and he isn't an outsider because, they invited him. He relates himself to Apostle Paul, and how he left his village to carry the gospel of Jesus Christ, and he's going to travel to Birmingham to protest and to bring peace. The letter states "so am I compelled to carry the gospel of freedom beyond my own home town. Like Paul, I must constantly respond to the Macedonian call for aid". King believes that laws should be just and obey decisions of the court. King wrote "we so diligently urge people to obey the Supreme Court's decision of 1954 outlawing segregation in the public school, at first glance it may seem rather paradoxical for us consciously to break laws". This means that he wants people to obey the court system. This claims that all laws must be taken into consideration. He also wrote how you can obey some laws and break others. The letter said "How can you advocate breaking some laws and obeying others?... an unjust law is no law at all." This means that some people tell others what to obey and what to break, and also relates to condoning people to do right and
