We live in a world that is constantly bounding forward. In that push for innovation, working long hours often overshadows what it takes for a person to maintain a healthy lifestyle. How can we expect to advance as a society if we are not taking care of our own health first? In order to achieve successes beyond what we ever have before, it is necessary for every person to be operating at maximum capacity. Companies that implement nutritional plans and allow their employees to exercise during work hours see improved health of their workers, happier employees, and a spike in business productivity. There is always a presence of the drive to “be better” in business, and this can only be grasped if every individual takes the time to address the basic …show more content…
Omitting nutrition and exercise from the agenda can result in employees with health related illnesses such as obesity, high blood pressure, and Type 2 diabetes. As a result, this could spiral into other serious reverberations such as slowed brain function or even death that comes with a diet high in saturated fats and sugar (AZ Central). For any business in search of revenues, unhealthy employees are undoubtedly detrimental to productivity. For example, look at any business that blossoms off part-time employees, such as McDonald’s. A majority do not offer health benefits comparable to companies that hire primarily full-time employees like Kaiser Permanente. Therefore, a company like McDonald’s budgets little money towards the concern for the nutritional lifestyle of its workers. Consequently, many of these McDonald’s employees are obese or highly susceptible to health related illnesses since the fast-food giant asserts little emphasis on a life of healthy living. Many employees thus consume a higher quantity of McDonald’s food while on the job, contributing to the harmful effects of a high fat and low nutritional diet. Moreover, because most of these fast-food buildings do not provide workers with an area to work out while on break, employees cannot reap the benefits of a midday workout. These include …show more content…
In hindsight, businesses that succeed in implementing these kinds of health programs produce overall happier employees. According to the American Psychological Association, “for employees who are more physically active, job burnout is less likely to develop into depression” and being allowed to exercise at work doesn’t cut into valuable family time at home (APA). The psychological effects that exercise provides for a person are unparalleled in the sense that it grants employees an emotional boost. After working out, people tend to feel better about themselves which stimulates happiness. When a person is happier, especially while at work, performance in their job will escalate far beyond a person who may be depressed or feeling down from a lack of physical activity. In addition, employees who spend more time with their families, instead of cutting out valuable interaction in order to exercise at home, experience stronger emotional relationships with their loved
This is an essay written in the MIT Sloan Management Review that presents the correlation between businesses and the issue of obesity in order to persuade businesses to take action in regards to preventing the issue. Therefore, its target audience is anyone who currently works in business or plans to do so in the future. In this review, the author begins by citing four internal and external reasons for which businesses should care about obesity: self-preservation, public criticism, employee productivity, and opportunity. The author proceeds by providing an idea as to how businesses can assist in reversing the trend. In order to do so, he analyzes what he considers to be the two sides of the obesity problem: physical activity and food consumption.
...ter for obese individuals than for average weight individuals. The healthier workers are, the fewer medical services they use. The five leading causes of death in the U.S., heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and diabetes — are directly linked to unhealthy lifestyles. Clearly, encouraging healthful habits presents an opportunity to improve workers’ well being, reduce the need for medical services and help control costs.
The people in the workplace can be categorized into two groups: the employer and the employees. The employees work for their employer and in turn, the employer has the duty and responsibility to ensure that the minimum safety requirements are met. However, employers are not required to provide health insurance benefits to their employees. More often than not, providing health insurance benefits is very costly to the employer and in an attempt to mitigate the costs, employers’ encourage employee participation in various healthy lifestyle programs and initiatives as well as providing incentives for their participation in such programs. These kinds of actions are not always met with enthusiasm, some find it unreasonable to be expected to do so on their own time to change their lifestyle to suit their employers.
Some people think eating healthy and exercising daily is too time consuming and expensive. The Department of Health and Human Services recommend that a person get two and a half hours of moderate exercise or an hour and fifteen minutes of intense exercise a week (n.d., paragraph 2). The Department also suggests a half an hour of exercise minimum daily (n.d.,paragraph). Unfortunately to some, those thirty minutes are thirty minutes more than they want to spend or have the time to spend exercising. The cost of eating healthy can also be more than people are willing or able to spend. The healthiest diets seem to cost about $1.50 more than the least healthy diets, which is on average $550 a year (Eating healthy vs. unhealthy diets cost about $1.50 more per day, 2013, 1,3). For some people, the time and money seem to overpower the benefits of treating the body correctly to ensure its longevity. The benefits of healthy eating and moderate exercise far outweigh the monetary cost and...
Nutritionism is an ideology that believes that the nutrients in foods are the key to understanding them. Nutritionism believers are so focused on the nutrients that food contains that they forget about all other aspects of food. The problem is that consumers rely on packaging to tell them what nutrients a food provides, since nutrients cannot be obviously seen, and they rely on science to tell us what nutrients are good and which are “evil”.
Education plays a dominant role in the lives of students all over the United States. Since most students spend roughly eight to twelve hours in school, it is important to make sure that they are provided with a healthy and nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack.
With the health care costs reaching high number there is no wonder we have a large number of absenteeism. So many wait to the last possible painstaking work day to decide to see a doctor about their aliment, and all of that could be prevented. Preventing oneself to have to take time off from work is one way to keep costs low. There are so many areas that need to be addressed when it comes to what is going to slow us down as a company. According to estimates by Dr. Jaime Claudio(1991), a corporate wellness consultant for Health Plus, a provider of health-care insurance, a comprehensive eating awareness and weight- management program designed to improve long-term habits could generate an 80% reduction in the incidence of potential problems caused by obesity in the workplace. These problems include hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease, and diminished work efficiency. Obesity is not the only eating disorder that is a problem, there is bulimia and anorexia. Smoking, drinking, substance abuse, and stress are problems that are brought into the workplace and stop productivity. We have to be aware of issues that are there but are not usually thought of as an illness.

Another large debate in the issues and impacts of obesity is the responsibility of employer’s. Especially for those whose obesity comes from a sedentary lifestyle. Or perhaps need the preventative measures of keeping obesity at bay. A hot topic on the rise is whether or not employers should be mandated to give employees a work-out period in their schedule. The employers could offer employee’s incentives for utilizing resources (a company gym, discounted memberships, and dietician, walking a company track) and by using the resources keep costs low. Though initially it could be costly to take on the responsibility to offer extra incentives to employee’s it could offer long term potential savings. (Villareal, Apovian, Kushner, and Klein 2005) Those whose companies offer various programs and actively engage in them express more happiness, productivity, a greater quality of life, and overall better health. Better health allows for employee’s to serve their employers better. They use less sick pay, keep insurance premiums low, and are more likely to be in tune with their daily job. So while the initial cost may be high, the long term financial gain of a happy, healthy, productive team is hard not to invest in!

People is always asking: “Why is important to have a balanced diet? Why is necessary to have a balanced diet on a daily basis? And why do professionals tend to recommend a balanced diet?” The human being has essential needs to its existence: breathing, feeding, and keeping the body in constant movement. The majority of the people are aware of this, but they do not have a balance among these things and even more important they do not eat the adequate food to keep their body healthy. Food is one of the most important factors because it gives the energy the body needs daily. In other words, few words food is the fuel that provides glucose, which is carried to each cell of the body through the bloodstream. This process is extremely important and this is influenced by the type of food that each person consumes. A balanced diet is important for human beings, and makes reference to a good nutrition with regard to the food they eat; which contains macro nutrients that are carbohydrates, fats, and proteins; these provide energy and basic materials that the body uses to grow and stay healthy.
