Introduction With the implementation of diversity into the place of work there will be barriers and challenges that would be faced by the organisation and its employees. Diversity needs to be managed effectively by the organisation and when done so will benefit the organisation immensely and promoted harmonious relationships in the workplace. Barriers and Challenges to implementing diversity in the workplace Barriers of Implementing Diversity in the Workplace There are four barriers which result when there is diversity in an organisation. The barriers are; Ethnocentrism: There is a belief that a certain group of individuals would consider
themselves superior than others i.e. a country, culture, language and behaviour of one group is better than another. This is also the case with religion, where members of a certain religion would think that they are superior to other religions. Ethnocentrism is present in organisations where a manager would give preference to people of his/her ethnicity, they would receive better paying work positions, privileges in the workplace, be consider intelligent, reliable and talented. Prejudices Members of staff would be prejudice towards others. This would stem from their first impressions of people and cause perceptions that are not true and based on bias. Stereotypes Stereotypes can be defined as a thought that can be adopted about specific types of individuals or certain ways of doing things. In an organisation stereotypes are very common, it is damaging as this affects decisions and behaviour in the workplace. Female members of staff are often stereotype they are not considered to be as talented, reliable and capable as their male counterparts and would therefore be passed over for key positions in an organisation.
Today, competent administrators show sensitivity to individual needs by encouraging upward mobility among all staff members. These forward-thinking leaders understand how important it is to treat all people fairly and equally and consider the dynamic forces that exist among employees. Sincerity in these matters is important, because a manager’s actions far outweigh their statements. Therefore, workplace leaders must learn to pinpoint and cultivate each employee’s special skills and promote upward or lateral mobility by providing training for the entire talent pool. To this end, managers must continually seek opportunities to learn more about diversity.
Diversity management requires that both the individual and the system adapt to each other. It consists of a culture change that will remove barriers to success due to differences.
