Challenges of Diversity in the Workplace
To make any changes in the work set up we are bound to have challenges. As we know that diversity is hard stuff to be managed are the main challenges while dealing with diversity could be:
Communication:
In order to succeed the diversity program the perceptual, cultural and language barriers need to be overcome so that we can achieve success.Ineffective communication of key objectives results in confusion, lack of teamwork, and low morale.
Resistance to change: There will be people who always want to go on the old way because they are so rooted it in and avoid any kind of change. The employees always seek the people who look like them talk in their own way so they tend to avoid change as diversity requires the acceptance from employee mainly to work together and embrace the change.
Implementation of diversity in the workplace
The real definition of diversity includes different elements of the identity and culture of each person. Diversity involves cultural differences, such as origins, religious or political affiliation, race, and gender, and other more profound differences, such as experiences and personality. As Banks argues in her research, the real definition involves several elements of our identity (149). Therefore, the way in which we define and conceptualize diversity affects the way in which we interact with people of others culture, race, and affiliations.
The dictionary definitions for the term “Diversity” are fairly similar in nature. The American Heritage Dictionary describes the following “The fact or quality of being diverse; difference” and also “A point or respect in which things differ…variety or multiformity”. Merriam-Webster describes the definition as “…Being composed of differing elements” and goes on to state, “the inclusion of different types of people (as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization”. This definition shows much more regard for people that are multi-cultural. Dictionary.com describes another angle saying “A point of difference”. The Encarta online dictionary has, in my opinion, one of better definition sets. They state “A variety of something such as opinion, color, or style” and “…socioeconomic and gender variety, in a group, society, or institutions…a company committed to diversity”. After exploring the various definitions, I noticed that the terms may be interchangeable, but the words are used laterally.
...ate its employees’ attitudes and their work with colleagues. This should be incorporated into their assessments and reviews, and any issues that are identified should be addressed promptly when delaing with their perfomance in their assessment. Such issues include an employee who only delegates work to specific individuals based on their race or an employee who disregards ideas from certain work colleagues due to their age. However, a manager who identifies diversity-related issues should not adopt a confrontational approach when discussing the issues with an employee. A good approach would be to encourage the employee to work with colleagues from different generations and backgrounds. The initiation of such interactions will encourage the employee to learn more about their objectives, talents, and communication styles and how they compare or contrast to their own.
One of the best definitions for diversity I have come across says, “Diversity is the mosaic of people who bring a variety of backgrounds, styles, perspectives, values, and beliefs as assets to the groups and organizations with which they interact ” (Rasmussen, 1996, p. 274). This definition has three noteworthy points. First, it describes diversity as a mosaic, which is different form the traditional label of a melting pot. A mosaic enables people to retain their individuality while contributing collectively to the bigger picture. Second, this definition of diversity applies to and includes everyone; it does not rule out anyone. According to this definition, we are all diverse. Finally, this definition describes diversity as an asset, as something desirable and beneficial! When viewed from this perspective valuing diversity is openness, fun, and can even be a cause for celebrating in discovering how we can join together to create more as a united team than any one of us can on our own. It is vital to business survival that the workplaces strive to attain this ideal collaboration.
To be successful in managing diversity in the workplace first one must understand it from a personal perspective. To be able to derive knowledge and strength from one’s lineage and differences shows deep facets in character. These traits show brilliantly when dealing with individuals of many cultures and backgrounds in the workplace. A leader with this ability can handle everyone uniquely and ethically and is in tune with what differentiates one associate from the next. Once one has a firm grasp on who they are then and only then can one expect to have the aptitude to lead a diverse team.
There are many different forms of diversity that effect human behavior and the culture of companies. These many different values, skills and abilities, ages, and occupations will be a challenge for managers today to find creative new ways to incorporate each individual’s ideas into their business and to create a productive culture that values every form of diversity.
Businesses that promote diversity in today's global marketplace are better able to attract and retain the best talent. Employing a diverse workforce allows a company to utilize the potential within the job market to its fullest and contributes to overall economic growth and prosperity. Differences among co-workers should not divide a workplace. Rather, differences among co-workers should be used to foster creativity and innovation, thereby driving profitability and business success.
In summary, most workplaces are becoming increasingly diverse as people from different genders, races, cultures, ethnic origins, and lifestyles find themselves working together. The key to making diversity work is management. Knowing what they are and understanding what effects (positive or negative) they have on the organization is very important to the success of the company.
In recent years, organisations are much more reliant on diversity teams to develop products, make decisions and also gain the business success (when and how). Therefore, diversity teams are becoming a very important element for the organisations. In USA, diversity usually refers to demographic characteristics such as age, gender, and ethnicity, however, diversity is not only refer to demographics, it also means the diversity in psychological characteristics like skills, personality, abilities, and education backgrounds (book diversity). During the decision making process, different team members can bring their different perspectives and stimulate the debates.
Diversity is defined as race, gender, age, language, physical characteristics, disability, sexual orientation, economic status, parental status, education, geographic origin, profession, life-style, religion, personality, position in the company hierarchy and any other difference[3]. In other words, diversity refers to ...

Making sure all members, students, parents and guarding’s are welcomed at all times in a well-mannered environment Workplace diversity is important within the organization as well as outside ensuring all different are put aside and everyone can come together and work well as a great team.

Diversity is a value that shows respect for the differences and similarities of age, sex, culture, ethnicity, beliefs and much more. Having a diverse organization, helps notice the value in other people and also how to teach respect to people that might not know how. The world is filled with different cultures and people that might believe in different things as you, but that doesn’t mean you need to treat them any different. It is imperative for people to grasp diversity because it’ll help people how to engage with others in a respectful yet a hospitable way.
