Maestro by Peter Goldsworthy provides an insight into 1960s/70s Australia and helps reinforce common conceptions about Australian culture. One common conception Goldsworthy reinforces in this text is Australia’s increasing acceptance of multiculturalism. Maestro, set in the 1960s to 1970s, shows Australians growing more accepting and tolerant of other cultures. This shift in perspective was occurring near the end of the White Australia/Assimilation Policy, which was phased out in the late 1970s/early 1980s. An example of this shifted perspective in Maestro is Paul’s father’s opinion about living in Darwin:
When Australia opened it’s migration policy, after 1945, to include those from a larger number of non-English speaking backgrounds, many moved to Canberra to help build the Capital during the construction boom of the period. Yet this did not create the harmony that was hoped for.
Throughout Australia’s history, international migrants have made vital contributions to Australian regional areas through trends of; population growth, revitalising local communities, helping to fill workforce shortages and by creating new jobs (through the increased demand in services). Currently regional areas face a range of challenges including; ageing populations, population decline and skills shortages. However, regional Australia is also presented with some major opportunities including; an increased demand of exports due to booming International economies (particularly south-east Asia and China), rapidly-evolving technologies, energy, telecommunications, water and transport opportunities for our regions, growth of towns (particularly

Australia demonstrates the ability to absorb and take advantage of different cultures just like the United Kingdom. In the 1950s, Australia experienced a major multicultural breakthrough. This was through the Gold Rush. A huge number of migrants and immigrants were brought together in Australia. This brought a major challenge as it led to unsettlement in the gold fields. This was a good lesson for the Australians as they learnt that people with different cultural backgrounds can stay together.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have been the first nations, which represented the whole Australian population, for centuries. However, the continuous European colonization has severely affected these peoples and, over the decades, their unique values and cultures, which enriched the life of Australian nation and communities, were not respected and discriminated by numerous restrictive policies. As a result, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have turned into the voiceless minority of the Australian population. Fortunately, in recent years, these issues became the concern of the Australian government, promoting a slight improvement in the well being of native Australians. Nowadays, there are numerous social work
What is Social Justice? Not many people have an understanding of this big issue still facing us today. This is affecting not only Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, but almost everyone in the world. I have chosen this topic because I believe that this issue is needed to teach residents and students how to respect one and other. This is especially important when the matter deals with the issue of background and culture.
A social issue or concern refers to an issue that influences a considerable number of individuals within a society. Though many start with a few protestors, the further an issue becomes exposed to society, the more attention and individual’s interest it will garner along the way. When thinking of pressing social concerns currently, many issues come to mind; equal pay for women, being accepting of all genders and sexual preferences, protecting the environment, ending racism, to name just a few of the hundreds that are present today. Specifically, one resonated with my own personal interests, more specifically, my service learning site of Elmwood Gardens, and stood out among the rest; higher education for every American citizen. Although almost

Although functions of mediators and arbitrators have several characteristics in common, there are significant instrumental differences that make them distinct from one another. Firstly, whereas the arbitration process is similar to litigation in its adversarial nature, in which parties have the objective to win the dispute, the fundamental goal of mediation is to bring the disputants to settlement through compromise and cooperation without finding a guilty party. In arbitration, parties compete against each other in “win-lose” situation. During mediation, parties work on mutually acceptable conditions with the assistance of a facilitator. In this process, mediators do not have power to make decisions, they work to reconcile the competing needs and interests of involved parties. The mediator’s tasks are to assist disputants to identify, understand, and articulate their needs and interests to each other (Christopher W. Moore,
Mediation is a way to solve a dispute without having to resort to court procedure which sometimes could turned out to be rigid, formal and time consuming especially when it needed a lot of paperwork and the possibility of adjournment which could consume years. Besides that, unlike in court, mediator as a third impartial party did not acted as a judge who decides on the resolution however, the mediator will help the parties to explore the needs and issue which before preventing them from achieving a mutual resolution and settlement. The mediation process gave the authority towards the parties to agree with each other and open up the chance for the parties to meet with a resolution at the end of the mediation session.

Poverty, violence, crime and racism are major social problems. If we look at the definition of what a social problem is, according to James M. Henslin,"A social problem isan aspect of society that people are concerned about and would like changed. Social problems begin with an objective condition, some aspect of society that can be measured or experienced...The second key element of a social problem is subjective concern, the concern that a significant number of people (or a number of significant people) have about the condition"(Social Problems,2003,p.3). Steinberg believes that disengagement has what it takes to not only be a general social problem but says it is as major as the issues I stated in the beginning. Steinberg (1996) states,"Although it is less visible, less dramatic, and less commented upon than other social problems involving youth...student disengagement is more pervasive and in some ways potentially more harmful to the future well being of American society"(p.28).
