We as a class have watched the movie ‘Whale Rider’, created by Niki Caro in two thousand and three. We are writing a response in paragraphed sentence form to analyse and evaluate this emotional film. I strongly believe that three themes I found intriguing were respect, tradition and cultural identity. A major theme in ‘Whale Rider’ is respect, the film made it obvious that Koro holds the most respect for he is the chief and everyone is expected to abide by his rules. Pai shows strength by standing up for herself in a passive aggressive way when being confronted by Koro who is her grandfather, but her strength comes with negativity. This theme is relevant to society because people of all ages can use persistence to gain respect from themselves and others surrounding, persistence can be used as an amour, a protection against those who show strength through violence and bullying. The perspective of persistence is shown through Pai’s strength by standing up for herself although she was being scolded for breaking tradition. For example when she saved Paikea their great ancestor she had to ignore Koro’s words saying not to touch the whale but she showed persistence and did what she knew was right, saving Paikea and the rest of the beached …show more content…

Teachers encourage children to show persistence throughout their schooling so they can protect themselves from bullies, rumours and rude remarks. “Persistence is the key to success”, this quoted from Goolwa Primary School that has been used for years to motivate kids to be persistent. Persistence links back to the major themes due to Pai’s motivation do to what’s right. Her actions may show disrespect to her Grandfathers’ beliefs but they are all for a good cause. Pai’s Grandfather Koro also shows persistence in the way he doesn’t give up on his students and continues to teach, he is very patient with the boys but frustrated at Pai’s constant effort to break
