A Long Walk to Water is a Realistic Fiction book that can be about Determination and it is made by Linda Sue Park. Nya is the main female character, and she has to fetch water everyday and it takes 8 hours of the day to get water and come back. Nya sometimes has to move to a lake during dry season and still has to get water, Nya. also doesn’t get to go to school or learn. Salva is the main male character, the part where Salva lives has been having war and Salva has to get to a refugee camp in Ethiopia along the way Salva meets a boy named Mariel and he finds his uncle, he makes it to a camp but a couple years later the government is falling and they have to go to another camp. Nya shows the theme Determination because she never quits walking she keeps going to the pond. Nya is from the tribe Nuer they are rivals with the DInkas, Nya lives in a village in Southern Sudan where there’s a pond Nya has to go to so she can get water for her family. Nya’s family includes her Mom, Dad, her brother Dep, Akeer her little sister, a little baby brother, and Nya’s uncle. My evidence to show that Nya shows the theme Determination because on page 20 it says, “Nearly a full day of walking altogether. This was Nya’s daily routine, seven months of the year.” and this supports the theme of Determination because even though she could be playing or learning she walks to get water and never gives up even though it takes 8 hours to walk there and back twice a day. Another reason Nya shows the theme Determination is on page 8-14 because it says, “Then she picked another thorn and used it to poke and pry the other one out.” and “Nya drew nearer.” which means even though she had a thorn in her foot she still kept walking even if it might of hurt still after she took the thorn out. FInally Nya shows the theme Determination is on page 26 and it says, “Nya’s job at the camp was the same as home, to fetch water.” This is the reason why Nya shows the theme …show more content…
Salva doesn't know where his family is and later on he gets to move to New York.. Salva wants to find his family but he doesn’t know where they are and they don’t know where he is. The reason Salva shows the theme Determination because on page 53 it says, “The worst moment of the day happened near the end, Salva stubbed his bare toe on a rock. The pain was terrible, but Salva still walked to the rock.” this shows Salva has determination because even though he hurt his toe he still kept walking and didn’t give up. Another reason Salva shows determination is on page 61 because it says, “Uncle when you go back you might meet my parents, you could tell them where I am.” this shows Salva has determination because he never gave up trying to find his family he still looks.Last reason Salva shows the theme Determination is on page 67 it says “If they are here, I will find them.” this shows Salva has determination because he still wants to find his family even if he can’t find them he still won’t give up
To begin, Salva went through a dangerous war but he managed to be mentally strong. When Salva’s uncle had died, the group of refugees that Salva had been traveling with started treated Salva as extra weight. Salva made the choice to keep going. He was determined to prove to the group that he is not useless and can be independent. In Chapter 11 it says, “The way they were treating him made Salva feel stronger still. There is noone left to help me. They think I am weak and useless. Salva lifted his head proudly. They are wrong and I will prove it.”(66) This quote shows that Salva became stronger because it helped Salva realize not to terror his life and that he does not need to depend on anyone and that he is more than what they see and think of him.
One example of the theme occurs when the author first introduces the story. “But the summer I was 9 years old, the town I had always loved morphed into a beautifully heartbreaking and complicated place.” (pg. 1). The author is saying that the year she turned nine, she found out something about her town that broke her heart and changed the way she saw it. This quote is important because it supports the theme. It shows that now she is older she has learned something about her town that made her wiser than when she was younger. She is now more informed because the new information changed her and caused her to begin to mature.
Jimmy Dean once advised, “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to reach my destination.” The novel A Long Walk to Water authored by Linda Sue Park, is a work of realistic historical fiction and a dual narrative focused on adjusting to change. One storyline is about a young eleven year old girl named Nya who is apart of the Nuer tribe and lives in Sudan. Nya lives the life of a young Sudanese girls because they collect water for their family every day. The other storyline is about an eleven year old boy named Salva who is in the Dinka tribe and lives in Sudan, but travels throughout many countries and states in his life. Salva’s story line shows how getting attacked by rebels and escaping from civil war changed his and many others’ lives. Both characters face many changes throughout the story. Linda Sue Park wants readers to know to accept change for good or bad.
According to her book, in chapter 9 page 53, it states, “It was the hardest thing Salva had ever done, taking only tiny sips when his body cried out for huge gulps of thirst-quenching, life-giving water.” This quote explains the obstacles against nature because Salva had to save his water for his journey into and out of the desert. Even though because of how warm the desert was, his body needed the water to continue his walk. He has to either decide to save his water for the walk because of how long it was going to be to get out, or drink the water and may not make it out. The changes in climate help Salva by learning how to handle different temperatures and environments. It also helps him when he has to go to a Kenya refugee camp and to swim across the crocodile-infested water. Salva eventually learned a great lesson about having to move to multiple places because of different reasons. He learns that having hope and persistence will go far. In addition, to the multiple changes in climate, Salva uses strength to get through his long
In A Long Walk to Water by, Nya’s section demonstrates determination and how determination is an important attribute for people to succeed and survive. Nya, an eleven-year-old Nuer girl who is living in Southern Sudan during a drought is required to walk back and forth to and from a pond to get water for her family. Firstly, Nya spends most of her days getting water from the pond but she is determined to provide her family with water so she continues her journeys to the pond and back for quite a long time. For instance, the text in A Long Walk to Water explains, “Waiting for water. Here, for hours at a time. And every day for five long months. Until the rains came and she and her family could return home”, (Park, page 27). Nya knows that she
Theme is the moral of the story. There can be 1 for an entire book or many in one book. Bravery helps people stand strong for what is right even when times are tough. is my thematic statement. Our scene is when Bod is on the big rock and the Jacks are telling him why they need to kill him and who they are. Bravery is the theme here because he shows that he will stand up ever when he is afraid. And when he is face to face with the people that want to kill him, he doesn’t run away. One of the Quotes that I believe shows bravery is , “‘you’ve not faded’ said liza ‘anyone could find you.’ ‘Good,’ said Bod. ‘I want them to find me’”. I believe this shows bravery because he is standing up to the jacks even though he might die. Another quote that
“All of the adversity I’ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me.” Walt Disney. The books A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, a fictional book, and Iqbal a fictional book, share the same theory. A Long Walk to Water is a book about the true story of Salva; a little boy that gets separated from his family because of the war in South Sudan and later becomes the leader of a group called the Lost Boys of South Sudan. This novel also includes a fictional story of Nya, a little girl that can’t go to school, because she has to walk to the water well twice a day, taking up most of the day. Salva helps Nya get a water well in her village years later by using his organization, Water for South Sudan. Iqbal is the true story of Iqbal Masih, a little boy that became a child slave, but was able to set himself and his friends free from slavery. This book is told in the point of view of Fatima a fictional little girl that was one of the children who was enslaved in the same factory as Iqbal. In each book, the characters grow stronger because of a cultural conflict. Cultural conflicts can force people to become stronger.
There were many themes illustrated throughout the memoir, A Long Way Gone by Ishmael beah. These themes include survival/resilience despite great suffering, the loss of innocence, the importance of family/heritage, the power of hope and dreams, the effects of injustice on the individual, and the importance of social and political responsibility. Every theme listed has a great meaning, and the author puts them in there for the readers to analyze and take with them when they finish reading the book.
There are many people that can’t have what you do. When you sit there and think about how poor you are and how much you don’t have you should really be thinking of the people that have even less. Linda Sue Parks was one of the people that did and she wrote a book called A Long Walk to Water which is a true story. In the novel there is a young boy named Salva Dut. Salva Dut was an 11 year old boy who was separated from his family because of a school shooting. This happened in Sudan which is now South Sudan because of war. In hopes that he finds his family again he will walk and walk everyday. Salva also faces many challenging things while he’s walking such as finding food and water, avoiding gunmen, and wild animals. Salva had a lot of accomplishments on his way too like leading 1500 lost boys of Sudan to a refugee camp by the Gilo River, then he goes to America seven years later and lives with a family in New York, and he finds his father many years later and starts a group called Water
The definition of the word theme is the message about life or human nature that is “the focus” in the story that the writer tells. (Glossary of Literary Terms). One of the messages the author is trying to get across to the reader is, the ability to accept ones true self. June May continuously worries about what her family will think about her. “And rather than be impressed, I am worried about the expense, as well as the appearance it must give Aiyi, that we rich Americans cannot be without our luxuries even for one night.” (187). Her family is over joyed with them visiting and could care less about judging her or her father. June learns by the end of her trip that she needs to accept herself and stop worrying about what others my think. How she sees herself is what matters. Another theme in this story is that blood is thicker than distance. This meaning regardless how far away family may be, they will always be a part of her culture and history. June May’s family in China loves her and cares for her, despite the fact that they have never met before. None of that matters because family is blood and no matter the circumstance they will always be a part of her Chinese heritage. “You wrote and said you would come for only one day. One day! How can you see your family in only one day!”(186). June’s father, Canning Woo, had told his aunt that they would come to China and visit for one day. His aunt was
“A Worn Path” is a short story written by Eudora Welty. It is based on an elderly African-American grandmother named Phoenix Jackson, who goes for a walk to the town of Natchez on a cold December morning to get some medicine for her ailing grandson. This story speaks of the obstacles Phoenix endured along the way and how she overcame them. The theme, central idea or message that the author wishes to convey to his or her readers, in “A Worn Path” is one of determination. Phoenix Jackson is determined to get to Natchez, in order to get medicine for her grandson; she does not let any obstacles get in her way. The theme of determination is shown in many ways throughout this short story.
Theme plays a very important part in this short story. Theme is the idea of a literary work abstracted from its details of language, character and action. The great example of theme that is evident throughout the entire short story is the duty to perform certain acts. We can see here that the Irishman Donovan is very big on obeying his duty to carry out orders that have been authorized to him.
My second reason the theme is struggling is that after the incident of father getting apprehended Mother, falls into a deep depression as she does not respond to Parvana or anyone else she just cries on the spot where father would sleep and on page 51 it says “Mother there's no food left” and this proves my theme because it’s about how Parvana's family has run out of food and since they don’t know what to do and it counts as
A determination is a driving force that helps people through rough times in their lives. Without determination, people would no longer strive for their goals. Throughout the short story, ‘Then Later, His Ghost,’ Sarah Hall shows how strength and determination can get you through these tough times. This theme is made clear through the severe setting the characters are faced with and her use of symbolism.
Unlike the other aspects, theme isn’t instantaneously perceptible to the audience. Theme could be regarded as the message for the audience that is derived from the plot. Depending on the exploits of the protagonist, the theme of a story could contrast from a moral lesson to an allusion to another story. In order for theme to be executed appropriately in a story, specific points must be mentioned give the audience an indication to the theme itself. A brilliant implementation of this was in The Bucket List; a movie about two lung cancer diagnosed men who met in a hospital. Since they were terminally ill, they opted to embark on an expedition to complete their bucket list (a particular amount of accomplishments a person aims to complete in their lifetime). The theme in this movie is to live life to its fullest regardless of what is stopping you. The inclusion of theme in a story is essential because it leaves the audience pondering over the message of the
