Reflection #2 It seems as if more and more Americans are getting sick. With obesity rates steadily climbing with an endless peek. It’s forcing us into a widespread epidemic; leaving one-third of the population overweight. Unfortunately obesity never comes alone. The effects of this self-inflicting disease can greatly lower someone mental health. While also increasing their chances of diabetes, cancer, heart disease, stroke and chronic illness. Leaving us to ask, if you’re sick how can you work? We are now forced to adjust the way the workplace is ran to face this epidemic. Wellness programs are starting rise across the country. With a birth during the late 19000’s, corporations are now heavily invested in this practice to mainly reduce health care cost of their employers. But their issues. Seems to be a lack of participation amongst employees. Why might that be? Well first you are not giving the option of participating if you want to, but forced. Secondly you can be fined for poor health habits like smoking. Thirdly it may violate your right to privacy and anti-discrimination laws under legal protections of the workplace. And lastly which may be the most important reason of them all. You can be fired for not making the cut of the assigned goal at hand. But according to serval studies corporate wellness programs can reduce health care cost.
Decrease the rate of illness and diseases. Increase employee relation, morale and much more. So how can you get your employees excited about this new activity if you are new starting CEO? Well start by leading by example. Engage in the wellness program along with everybody else. They say “monkey see monkey do”. And if they don’t see your participation many will question why are we doing this if you aren’t. As a CEO you are more heavily invested in this company than any other employee. So it would only make sense to be engaged. Give out periodic rewards to employees that make any set of goals. We all want a reward when completing a task. Added bonuses at the end of each stage will make people more motivated to finish. But most importantly just express the direct benefit it will have on your health. We all want a long prosperous life. that. It takes time to build up these corporate wellness programs and your first shot at it may not be successful. Instead of being so quick to wave the white flag try again but implement these tools the second time around. First develop realistic goals! Goals the average person can achieve while also managing a work schedule. Then go on to constantly monitor everyone progress, don’t just check in at the very end. Keep an open window of communication that should readily available to everyone. And lastly adjust projects when they need to be adjusted. Nothing ever goes as planned. Be prepared to make changes to the schedule. By maybe extending a deadline of a certain goal. Or even getting rid of certain aspect of the program to accommodate everybody.

Employee wellness programs, also known as a “worksite wellness program”, are programs that are designed to promote and support the health, safety, and well being of a company’s employees. Wellness programs are meant to improve the health of the staff, their morale, and in turn also help improve their productivity. There are many components that make up employee wellness programs, for example; Health Screenings, Health Fairs, Fitness classes, Smoking cessation classes, and even wellness issue workshops. Employers have begun adopting these programs in hopes of helping their employees while they are at an age when health interventions can still help transform their long-term health choice. This paper will focus on trends found between employee weight and productivity, and the impacts these could have on a business overall.

The clinical e.g. used injections and bodily waste e.g. period pads must be in the clinical waste bins. It’s also important that the clinical waste bins are cleaned twice a day. Healthy and thriving workforce is key asset to any organization and the workplace has significant impact on people’s health and well being. Most of the companies, especially in the current economic climate, are actively seeking ways to reduce operating costs. Yet most organizations are ill prepared to meet the challenges associated with the changing demographics of their workforce.
Wellness provides the mind, body, feelings, and spiritual well-being individuals gain in their daily lifestyle. When most individuals in society hear the phrase wellness they assume it is referring to physical wellness. Which is true, but did society know that physical wellness is part of the seven wellnesses that are broken down into extension? Which are known for physical, emotional, intellectual, social, spiritual, environmental, and occupational wellnesses. These seven wellnesses help provide ways for individual to do daily and guide individuals to maintain a good health from inside and out.
Healthy People 2020 focuses on many initiatives, however, the ones that interest me the most are making access to health services easier, achieving equal health by eliminating health disparities, and overall improving health-related quality of life. A main concern of Healthy People’s is disparities, and it is their goal to “achieve health equity, eliminate disparities, and improve the health of all groups” (Healthy People 2020). A disparity is when a health outcome is seen to a greater or lesser extent between populations. Healthy disparities are usually closely linked to disadvantages such as social, economic, and environmental. In order to eventually achieve a health equity, we must value everyone equally and address inequalities, injustices, and eliminate disparities within the healthcare system.
Healthy people 2020 is an initiative that has been taken to make the world healthier. Healthy people 2020 has set numerous objectives some that has objectives have data and some that doesn’t. In order for Healthy People 2020 to be successful, it is dependent in part on the ability of health agencies at all levels of the government and on non-governmental organizations to assess objective progress. The health topics that are of focus are general health status, health-related quality and well-being, determinants of health, and disparities.
With the health care costs reaching high number there is no wonder we have a large number of absenteeism. So many wait to the last possible painstaking work day to decide to see a doctor about their aliment, and all of that could be prevented. Preventing oneself to have to take time off from work is one way to keep costs low. There are so many areas that need to be addressed when it comes to what is going to slow us down as a company. According to estimates by Dr. Jaime Claudio(1991), a corporate wellness consultant for Health Plus, a provider of health-care insurance, a comprehensive eating awareness and weight- management program designed to improve long-term habits could generate an 80% reduction in the incidence of potential problems caused by obesity in the workplace. These problems include hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease, and diminished work efficiency. Obesity is not the only eating disorder that is a problem, there is bulimia and anorexia. Smoking, drinking, substance abuse, and stress are problems that are brought into the workplace and stop productivity. We have to be aware of issues that are there but are not usually thought of as an illness.
The second company that I will cover is General Mills, they do not have as intense a program as General Electric but they have a very well rounded health and wellness program that I believe Norfolk Southern could take an example from. General Mills has a screening tool, a computerized self-assessment that “helps employees identify health risks, motivate healthy lifestyle changes, and learn about health and wellness resources” (Workplace Wellness).
When thinking of my overall health, a few aspects stand out that I think I could definitely improve on. When I think my current personal wellness I think it is fairly decent. There are definitely people out there far worse than myself. It could be better because there is always room for improvement. I’m a big fan of personal growth. To me if a person decides to stop growing or wanting to better themselves either mentally, physically or emotiontally. Then whats the real purpose for living? I am a fairly active person. I love to hike, stay fit and eat healthy. Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t hard for me which I think definitely contributes to a wellness.
If one wants to live an enjoyable, fulfilling life they must know what it truly means to be well. Living a wellness lifestyle means incorporating all aspects of what it takes to flourish as a human being. It goes beyond the health of the physical body and incorporates the important social, emotional, and spiritual factors that play a part in every person’s life in one way or another. Knowing how to act correctly, control our feelings, channel our frustrations, and improve in each dimension of wellness will lead to a satisfactory life. Spiritual, physical, emotional, nutritional, and social wellness define the biggest components of life and thriving in them is vital.
Human resources will need to place emphasis on employee wellness my initiating programs that “include work-life balance processes, stress management, and therapy programs, and facilitating an open dialogue about mental health and illness to remove much of the stigma that plagues the conversation and ailments (Guppta, 2016).” By utilizing flexible work schedule options, demanding jobs with high-stress levels are possible because employees’ free time does not have to be sacrificed.
Another large debate in the issues and impacts of obesity is the responsibility of employer’s. Especially for those whose obesity comes from a sedentary lifestyle. Or perhaps need the preventative measures of keeping obesity at bay. A hot topic on the rise is whether or not employers should be mandated to give employees a work-out period in their schedule. The employers could offer employee’s incentives for utilizing resources (a company gym, discounted memberships, and dietician, walking a company track) and by using the resources keep costs low. Though initially it could be costly to take on the responsibility to offer extra incentives to employee’s it could offer long term potential savings. (Villareal, Apovian, Kushner, and Klein 2005) Those whose companies offer various programs and actively engage in them express more happiness, productivity, a greater quality of life, and overall better health. Better health allows for employee’s to serve their employers better. They use less sick pay, keep insurance premiums low, and are more likely to be in tune with their daily job. So while the initial cost may be high, the long term financial gain of a happy, healthy, productive team is hard not to invest in!
I have learned a lot about my health and wellness thorough out this semester it is truly amazing. The impact these seven different dimensions have on our health they are, physical, intellectual, psychological, spiritual, social, environmental, and occupational all play a role in our health. All in so many different ways working together to make a brighter and happier healthier us. These seven dimensions make up whom we are and how we live our life is all based upon how we balance these dimensions.
