It was a hot summer afternoon with the smell of fresh pizza out of the oven in the air just after lunch at around 4:30 pm when it happened. He was an African American man, about 5’9”. He looked and smelled as if he had not shaved or showered in months. He had on a stained navy blue button down shirt almost 2 sizes larger then him and wore saggy torn up pants which were held in place by a belt. As he asked for a cup of water I replied by saying all we had were bottled water and since it was not my store I had to have him pay for it. As I said this he began to get frustrated and started throwing whatever he could find to the ground then pushed over a large stand full of calzones causing it to come falling down and causing a huge mess. After being told that cops were on their way the man left the store and did not return for some time.
At approximately 1850 hours, I approached Jackson approximately five spaces inside of the Westfield Shopping Town Blue Garage where I identified myself both verbally and with a badge as Nordstrom Loss Prevention. At this time Westfield Mall Security observed the apprehension. I then asked Jackson if he knew why I stopped him, Jackson was absolutely silent in which I asked him if he had a medical condition or if he understood my questions. Jackson shook his head ‘yes’ to asking if he understood me, I then asked Mall Security to assist me with the escort due to Jacksons strange behavior.

One major difference in this McDonalds than the other Mcdonalds was that the janitor here was a young Caucasian male that looked like he was around 25. He had on the same uniform as the other staff member and wore black glasses. All the Janitors in Washington Heights mainly consisted of Hispanic women. This janitor though seemed frustrated because he really had no space to move or clean. People were cycling in and out of the restaurant. When I was there the African American woman next to me spilled her drink all over the floor. The janitor told her it was okay many times as she kept apologizing. I could tell he had a hard time by the moans he made and he kept running from one end of the restaurant to the other. Also since it was raining he constantly went to the entrance to mop, but was constantly stopped by the people coming in.
