On a 57 acre plot of land, atop Mount Saint Albans in Northwest Washington, rests the Washington National Cathedral. As the second largest cathedral in the United States and the sixth largest in the world, Washington National Cathedral, characterized by its majestic Gothic style architecture, houses not only awe-inspiring artwork, but also soothing medieval gardens that leads an individual to marvel at its sacred beauty. On the front steps, peace overcomes the atmosphere and the hustle and bustle of the city fades away. Though there are tourists rustling around, the entire world seems to have stopped and a stale, humid silence engulfs the air. Situated flawlessly on the interior walls of the nave are immense and brightly colored stained glass windows. The colors of the rainbow seem to shower down upon them to form breathtaking images. Wonderment and mystery flows from the windows as the yellow sun shines brightly through them. On the right and left of the nave, statues of important historical figures are exhibited. The silent faces of Rosa Parks, George Washington, and Mother Theresa inspire their onlookers to delve into their stories out of mere respect and admiration. Inside the Holy Spirit Chapel, the intricately carved wooden reredos behind the altar features a serene vision of heaven. The dark bronze painted oak panels and numerous powder white doves that appear throughout the chapel remind one of the comforts from simple times spent under a shade tree with grandparents.
