This paper explores the self-proclaimed pharmacy in all of North America, known as Walgreens. This paper will go over what made Walgreens the top pharmacy by diving into How technology has helped and improved the company as a whole, the development of the company 3 years prior to 2016 as well as the SWOT (Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities & Threats) analysis of the company. Walgreens in the beginning was just an ordinary neighborhood pharmacy that provided goods like first aid, cosmetics, health aid, etc. This huge corporation was by a guy named Charles R. Walgreen, in a town called Dixon just right outside of Chicago. Walgreen made it an effort to provide outstanding customer service in addition to making sure the customers need come before all, moreover he wanted to create products and services within the company that would serve as a benefit to not only customers but his employees as well, this is a trend that's still going strong to this day.

Unlike its competitor ‘Rite aid’ who offers a very convenient loyalty system that can be used at Macy’s, at&at, Balance Rewards is exclusive to only Walgreens and Duane Reade. I know what the Walgreens company was going for, but I feel extending their service to give their customers more chances to gain points and sale opportunities. Opportunities: Walgreens offers a lot of opportunities to move in the company, for an example great pay and benefits, more chances to give back to the community. According to Smithson, Walmart can expand its markets to new and emerging markets especially in the third world countries, which can significantly increase its revenues. Secondly, the company can reform is employment practices and improve the quality standard and in doing so, attract more customers and improve its brand image. On the other hand, the company faces threats such as the rising healthy lifestyle trend I that the company in most cases does not provide customers with healthy goods. At the same time, the company can capitalize on this aspect and increase its revenues. Aggressive competition from other discount retailers such as Target creates a great threat to the company (Smithson, 2015).

Their company has drastically grown and improved over the years, but their commitment to their customers, clients and communities has never wavered. Also, mergers and acquisitions could be used by the company to its advantage. That would be following into footsteps of the CVS recent acquirement of Arbor Drug and Revco and comparable transactions performed by the CVS competitors such as Rite Aid acquiring Marco, Thrifty Payless, and K&B.
Walgreens was founded in 1901 measuring 50 feet by 20 feet by Charles R. Walgreen, Sr.. Mr. Walgreen was born near Galesburg, Illinois and his family later relocated to Dixon, Illinois at town about 60 miles north of his birthplace. Mr. Walgreens’ father was a farmer who turned into a businessperson and saw a great potential of the Rock River Valley (Walgreen, n.d., p.1). At age 16, Charles Walgreen had his first experience working in a drug store. He didn’t always have pleasurable experiences but it was a job with pay. He had an accident at a shoe factory that cut off his left middle finger from the top joint. This injury also stops him from playing any sports at school. After a year and a half with the drug store, Mr. Walgreen left to pursue something bigger in the big city-Chicago.
Strengths for Duquesne University would be that it is nationally ranked number 115. This is a number that can beat many competitors and creates benefits for those that attend. Classes that have fewer than twenty students is 40.9% and classes that have fifty or more students is only at 9%.. Religious values are what many people look for to keep that connect they have with their beliefs, having these values instilled in the curriculum could be a benefit view for parents and students.
Since 1901, Walgreens has had a strong passion for customer service. The founder, Charles Walgreens, goal was to create a drugstore that was like no other. He said that for as many drugstores as he had worked at, he had never worked for one that had a focus for good customer service and low prices. Walgreens has grown by leaps and bounds since 1901 and is now recognized as the leader in the market with over 7000 stores. Charles Walgreen had an eye for good managers. He said he was able to pick people that he knew were smarter than him so to promote them and make them the heads of his drugstores. As a store manager, not only is it your job to run a store which includes ordering, customer care, and inventory control, but also it is your job to manage the staff. As a part of managing staff, it is their responsibility to hire, train and develop, and terminate if need be. While there are many jobs to choose from when it comes to HR and employee staffing, I choose this one because it is by far to me the most intense.
Walgreens ensures to have high quality products and solutions by making it convenient for clients to get in and out with what they actual need, enhancing its beauty products and stimulate the convergence of health care by putting everything together. In addition, by utilizing over-the counter health service and providing wellness products, the company helps its customer to find more seamless solutions. Employees are trained to make friends and build relationship internally with their customer. Beyond accelerating the products in the physical store, delivering well experiences to customers also need highly engaged employees offer superior customer care in every community. In addition to provide outstanding customer service in retail stores, the company started a piloting program where people are able to order their prescriptions through phone and takes advantage of convenient curbside pick up. In 1978, when two executives Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank received news they were fired from their jobs at Handy Dan Home Improvement Centers, they decided to take something negative and turn it into an opportunity. They put their experience and knowledge of the business and industry together and developed a business plan to create a chain of home-improvement warehouses. Their idea was to create a business which would be larger and more profitable than any of their competitors. So in 1979, one year after being fired, they acquired their funding and opened three stores in Atlanta which they branded with the name Home Depot. Today, Home Depot is the world’s largest home improvement chain and second-largest retailer after Wal-Mart, operating approximately 2,250 stores throughout the Americas (Parnell, 2014).

Walmart is one of the most successful franchises of all time and continues to take fire from multiple angles, whether it’s about the costing of jobs, the wages, the health insurance, the small business destruction, or the environmental impact, but can always back itself up by negating those claims with facts that proves that it is beneficial to the community.
This is a good question. Walmart started as a small five and dime in the city of Bentonville, Arkansas by a man named Sam Walton. After a great success Sam and his wife Helen moved to Rogers, Arkansas where he opened his very first Walmart. He had some retailing experience after his time in the war and he chose Bentonville for the hunting season and because his wife wanted to live in a small town. His ideas of not pocketing extra cash from manufacturers, but rather giving deals to customers and trying to make profit off of how much he sold, changed the way retailers make money in America. Of course with these buildings and land, equipment and fixtures lie within them. The value that Walgreens puts upon the equipment and fixtures super cedes any other factor of importance. Likewise, CVS appears to consider the same items as significant. However the only item that CVS embraces value to that Walgreens does not are their leasehold improvements

Grass opened Rite Aid’s first store, through Rack Rite, in 1962, as a Thrift D Discount Center, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. 1963, Thrift D Discount Center became a drugstore chain when they opened five more stores. In 1965, the Thrift D Discount Center expanded to five northeastern states by quickly acquiring and opening new stores. In 1966, the first Rite Aid store opened in New Rochelle, New York. 1976, they introduced seventy Rite Aid private label products. The next year, 1968, they changed their name, officially, to Rite Aid Corporation and started trading on the American Stock Exchange. Then, two years later, in the beginning of the 1970’s, they moved to the New York Stock Exchange. Again, two years later, 1972, they had been operating 267 stores in 10 states. 1981, nine years later, they became the third-largest retail drugstore chain in the country. In 1983, they made over $1 billion in sales. In 1987, their twenty-fifth anniversary was celebrated and they, by then, had 420 stores in 9 states and Washington D.C., as well as Pennsylvania, where they started their business as a Thrift D Discount Center, in Scranton. Their market had greatly expanded and they had passed the 2,000-store mark to become the nation’s largest drug store chain in terms of store count. Walgreen's was the one that stood out for me was its diversity outlook and their corporate culture. While doing research about this company I came across the section of Diversity and Inclusion at Walgreen's, which I love one part of their paragraph, “Diversity isn't about tolerance, but acceptance. It is also not about what you look like, but rather about celebrating our differences and recognizing the unique value that every person brings to the organization.” This makes me happy to know that a company like this oversees looks and does not judge, they just value the skills the person is able to bring to the table and want the best work from each employee.
