In the chapter “Waiting between the trees.” from the Joy Luck Club, we encounter Ying-Ying’s 1st marriage, and how it affected her and others around her. Throughout the text it has this theme of marriage and relationships, and with ying ying she ended up killing her first child out of fury and depression due to the fact that her husband was cheating on her with an opera singer. My perspective on this chapter, the situation and story that Ying Ying describes is that it was all a “Lie”. The reason I describe Ying Ying’s first marriage is a lie because it is evident that the husband’s desire and intention to be in a relationship was for her physical aspects and that she was a virgin. These trips began soon after we married, but they became longer after the baby was put in my womb.I remembered that the north wind had blown luck and my husband my way. So at night when he's away, I open my bedroom windows, even on cold nights, to blow his spirit and heart back my way. What I didn't know is that the north wind is the coldest. It penetrates the heart. This quote, to me, has a significant meaning. A meaning that goes deeper and it's almost said and described with emotion and longing. The reason why I state this is because Ying says that she opens her bedroom windows even on cold nights so that he would come back, to be with her and spend time with each other. She waits for her husband, She most likely misses him, therefore opening the window in her bedroom to let the North Wind in. But at the end of the quote she says, “What I didn t know is that the north wind is the coldest. It penetrates the heart. This quote has this aura of betrayal and lies. In my opinion, Ying is saying this in the future and talking about the past because the way she describes it and the way she expresses it shows this disgust and sadness that she went
