Volleyball has a rich history dating back over 100 years ago. In the beginning of volleyball history, the sport was not very popular. It was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts (History).William G. Morgan was born in 1870 in New York and died in 1942. He had originally called volleyball, mintonette. He made the game using components from basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball (History). The first net was borrowed from a tennis court and was set at 6'6". The game was added to high school and college physical education programs and intramural programs in 1916. In 1919, American Forces exported 16,000 volleyball to its troops and allies, which helped the expansion of volleyball grow into foreign lands (Volleyball). The three hit rule was instituted along with back row attack rules in 1920. Those rules are still useful to this day. The YMCA held its first national championship in New York with 27 teams from the 11 states represented in 1922 (Volleyball). This was a very big accomplishment for the sport. The USVBA, United States Volleyball Association, was formed to help make rules in 1928 (History). In 1964, volleyball was introduced to the Olympic Games in Japan (History). This proved that volleyball had grown internationally in less than 70 years. The American Volleyball Professionals, also known as the AVP, was made in 1983. In the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, both men and women teams won silver and gold medals (History). The Women's Professional Volleyball Association, the WVPA, was formed in 1986 (History). The rules are made to keep players safe and to make the game fair. A team plays with 6 players on the court with a minimum of 3 players (Recreational). The best of 3 games will win the match (Recreational). The team who reaches 25 with at least a two-point advantage will be the winner of the game (Recreational). For a deciding game, it will be won by the team who scores 15 points with a two-point advantage (Recreational). Rest periods between each game will be no longer than 2 minutes (Recreational). Each team is permitted 2, 30-second time-outs per game (Recreational). Time-outs can be requested when the ball is not in play (Recreational). The serve is one of the most important parts of the game and has very specific rules that players must follow (Recreational). The server has 5 seconds to begin the serve from the time the official blows his or her whistle (Recreational). Once the serve has begun, the server may not touch the out of bounds line until the serve is complete (Recreational). The ball that is served is allowed to hit the net and is still in play as long as the ball goes over the net and stays in bounds (Recreational). There are rules about the ground and net that must not be broken. If a ball hits the ceiling or lights, it is still in play unless the ball goes over the net directly from the ceiling or light (Recreational).
