My heritage from my father's side of the family begins in the Barbados Islands, Atlantic, though much of my family spread around the world. They lived a peaceful life. In the 1970s my great grandfather was offered a job and moved to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. As a middle class family my grandmother, Candice Boyce, was student in middle school. Candice graduated high school in 1974. My great grandfather flew to Los Angeles, California over a job offer. After he and the family arrived in California, they gained their citizenship 5 years later.

I wake up to the sun shining through the window and the faint laughter from my family downstairs. It's the first day of our annual trip to Rhode Island. I lie in bed for a few moments and think about one thing. Rhode Island. I wouldn’t rather be anywhere else than here. I glance at the clock and it is only eight in the morning, but everybody is already up, enjoying breakfast, and getting ready to head to the beach. It's not supposed to rain until later in the day, so hopefully we can enjoy our day at the beach before it rains. I eventually make my way out of bed and tiptoe across the frigid wood floors and join my family downstairs. Everybody is up except my brother, Thomas.
Since I am not of native decent my family has gone through the immigration process on both sides. My family tree dates back generations to Ireland and England. My father is mainly Irish, his Irish roots trace back to his grandparents. His family had remained in Ireland for centuries until later immigrating to the U.S. The history further than my great-grandparents is vague as my father’s family had lived in Ireland for generations before. Despite being predominately Irish my closest roots with immigration come from England. My grandfather on my mother’s side is a first-generation citizen and is the only immigrant I have known in my family. He often discusses his roots in England and what life was like adjusting to life in America. His stories provide a unique perspective of life in America, verse life in England where our family originates from.

In the Southeast and south central area the islands are mountainous, (Sierra Maestra.) Rather than that the rest of the Islands, islets, and cays are flat. Cuba is a communist state. Arawak or also known as Taino, Indians have populated Cuba and this happened once Columbus landed on the island in 1492. Then shortly after died from an illness he battled due to diseases the sailors and settlers had transmitted aboard.
The British, Dutch, and French had begun to claim some of the smaller islands in the Caribbean despite Spanish protests, claiming that the Spanish had no investments in the smaller islands of the Lesser Antilles, and that they belonged to whomever could “effectively occupy” them. This policy of Effective Occupation legitimized the settlement of Montserrat, and other islands, by the British. The first settlers of Montserrat were most likely Irish Catholics from St. Kitts (which was also claimed by Britain) who arrived there in 1632.
Over the last five hundred years the Cayman Islands have had a rich and diverse history. They grew from being very isolated islands inhabited mostly by crocodiles and turtles to being one of the worlds premier tourist and financial centers. Being so small and isolated has given the Caymanians a strong sense of history and culture that is distinct, even from their Caribbean neighbors. They enjoyed a relative sense of insulation from many of the problems that plagued the rest of the region.
Let’s begin with the location of Barbados. Barbados is an Island of a cluster of Caribbean Islands. Its location is on the boundary of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, in a somewhat strange location, if you may. The Island is 166 square miles and is located 13 degrees North, 59 degrees West, leaving it at around 270 miles north-east of Venezuela. Closest to the Island are the nations Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Barbados is generally a flat island, with a central highland; the highest point being Mount Hillaby which stands at 336 meters tall. Barbados is also known as “Little England” by the British. Barbados was named by Pedro A. Campos, a Portuguese explorer, who originally named the Island “Os Barbados’ (The Bearded Ones) because he believed that the islands fig trees looked like beards due to their drooping aerial roots. The capital of Barbados is Bridgetown.
Millions of years ago fierce volcanic activity began deep below the sea, in the region known now as the Caribbean. Some of these volcanoes managed to push their way up from the ocean floor to become islands; the tallest of these islands is Dominica. Since then Dominica has seen many different inhabitants, some stayed for thousands of years while others abandoned the island as soon as they arrived. From the ancient Ortoroid, Igneri (Arawak), and Kalinago (Carib), to the Spanish, French and English, every group left their mark and thus Dominica has a very rich and diverse history.
The view was so beautiful. I could see coconut trees for miles. Or maybe they were palm trees. I couldn’t tell the difference. I could also sight the ocean, surrounding the entire island. The ocean was clear as glass. I could see many tall skyscrapers and Pearl Harbor in the background, and I could also sight the outline of a beach and mountains in the distance. Welcome to Hawaii, one of the best places to be.
Last summer, I went to Hawaii with my family and friends Vasu and Parth who are now in high school. The lesson which I learned is to not play when someone is tricking you. We landed at 9:00PM, rented a car, reached the resort which had seven restaurants, two swimming pools, and a sandy beach nearby.
There are two sides to a person’s family and one side of my family has been traced all the way back to slavery. My father’s side of the family originally came from a Georgia plantation. Although my father is Afro-American, his great-great-grandfather was a general who owned slaves. From Georgia my father moved to New Jersey. After settling in New Jersey, my father enlisted in the military and began his life as a military man. My mother’s side of the family is all from Puerto Rico. My grandparents moved my mother and her sister to America when they were very young. They moved to Macedonia, Illinois. When my mother got older she too enlisted in the military as a nurse. My mother met my father while they were both serving in the military in Germany. After they both finished their time in the military, my mother mov...
I still remember the day I went to Hawaii. It was the best experience ever. The best part about it is that I spent the whole time with my family and my best friend Joe.
I once sat down with my Palestinian-born grandmother and inquired about her life as a child. I had always been aware that she was not a natural-born American citizen, and I was intrigued by her upbringing and how exactly she ended up in Cleveland, Ohio. As the conversation developed I found there were details that stuck out to me more than others. As a child, my grandmother wanted to learn English so that if she ever came over to the United States she would not be questioned by other citizens in regards to the authenticity of her citizenship. She also explained to me that she had a rather difficult time securing the correct paperwork and necessary legal components to obtain her citizenship.
