My chosen artwork is "The Starry Night" by the famous Post-Impressionist artist Vincent van

Gogh. He painted it in 1889 during his stay at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum near Saint-

Rémy-de-Provence in southern France. Van Gogh's paintings are among the most valuable and most

collectible pieces of art in the world and his painting "The Starry Night" is one of the

world's most recognizable works of art.

Vincent William van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853 in the village of Groot

Zundert,Netherlands. Van Gogh’s career as an artist began when he was 27 years old and lasted

only ten years during which time he created approximately 900 paintings and 1100 drawings. Van

Inspired by these artists’ harmonious matching of colors, shorter brushstrokes, and liberal use

of paint, van Gogh adopted brighter, more vibrant colors in his art and loosened his brushwork,

emphasizing the physical application of paint on the canvas. The style he developed in Paris

and carried through to the end of his life became known as Post-Impressionism, a term

encompassing works made by artists unified by their interest in expressing their emotional and

psychological responses to the world through bold colors and expressive, often symbolic images.
Van Gogh's expressive and emotive use of color and his dramatic and distinct brushwork became

hugely popular and went on to greatly influence Expressionism, Fauvism, and early Abstraction

art as well as various other aspects of 20th-century art.

One artist who had a great influence on van Gogh's artistic style was Paul Gauguin, and by

painting side-by-side during the time that they shared a house in Arles, France, they
