Can we take law in our hands? This is what vigilantes do. They are normal people who don't have any authority or right to enforce any legislation. They try to protect other people around them by enforcing the rules that are not followed. However, vigilantes might end up causing more harm than good. Recently, many vigilante groups appeared due to lack of law that is a result of the unstable political situation Egypt has been going through. In the last three years Egypt has been suffering from many issues like traffic problems , thugs everywhere and a remarkable increase in the number of harassed women. In Eid El Adha ; an Islamic celebration ; many people took advantage of the crowd to harass girls and the police didn't take any action and that's …show more content…
They also argue that this is the job of the policemen and that the policemen are the people who have the authority to do this. I strongly agree that when a woman is harassed she should go directly without thinking to the police office and file a complain, but what if the policeman refused to file any complaint. What if the policemen aren't as helpful as they are expected to be? How should the women suppose to act? Who is going to protect her? Unfortunately , policemen in Egypt refuse to file or document any complaint against the harassers(). Further more, the policemen may put the blame on the woman and claim that they can't help her. In a situation like this someone have to act to protect egyptian women. Someone have to step out to put limits to these harassers and show them that there are consequences for harassing a woman. As long as the policemen are not willing to help even by reporting a complaint file, Egypt will be desperately in need to campaigns like …show more content…
Imagine going to the police office to file a complaint against a harasser and then you find the policeman there harassing you. What makes the situation worse is that other policemen just stand there laughing or checking the woman out instead of acting and protecting her. If the person who is have authority to protect Egyptian women from being harassed is joining in the crime, who will look after these victims. where should they go to complaint ? Women are afraid to go to the police office so they don’t harassed there. A Cairo-based psychologist called Salima Barakat believes that the psychological drawback of being harassed from a person that have the authority to protect the victim from being harassed is far more than the psychological effect of being harassed by normal people in the street. Salima Barakat argues that this drawback is a result of knowing that the policeman will not be punished. Vigilante groups like “Estargel” appeared in egypt to show regular men and policemen that harassing a woman verbally or physically is not okay and to show them that there are people out there that will look after egyptian
There were many accounts of what happened in Prineville on that fateful day in 1882, in Reign of the vigilantes, William Thompson told a very different account of the events of vigilantism that occurred on March 15, 1882 Thompson bent the truth to protect himself.
Throughout the tale of time, thoughts of revenge have corrupted even the most innocent of minds. In Andre Dubus’ “Killings”, Matt Fowler is conflicted by two opposing forces: his own desire and his wife’s demand for the death of their son’s murderer. Through her manipulative words and her emotional meltdowns, Matt Fowler ultimately succumbs to his wife’s request and commits the gruesome act, which causes the audience to reevaluate the appropriateness and cost of vigilante justice.
... stand up for their rights because there is no one to support them. Furthermore, police officers are being unresponsive when women are being a victim of rape. Therefore, laws oppress women by not punishing men when they commit rape or any other violent crime toward women.
In order to deal with the occurrence of sexual assault in our society, we must examine its causes more deeply. We must understand the sociology of sexualized violence in order to effectively explain its groups and individual dynamics.
Vigilantism - The term vigilantism is defined by the textbook as "the act of taking the law into one 's own hands" (Schmalleger 140). Although today this term has a negative connotation, most of the original vigilantes of the American West were honest men and women trying to forge an organized and predictable lifestyle out of the challenging situation which they encountered. Furthermore, vigilantes, who often times faced unscrupulous, money-hungry desperadoes, did what they could in order to bring the standards of civilization, as they understood them to bear in their communities. The idea of "vigilante justice" is often rationalized by the idea that adequate legal mechanisms for criminal punishment are either nonexistent, insufficient, or inefficient. Additionally, vigilantes typically see the government as ineffective in enforcing the law and often claim to justify their actions as a fulfillment of the wishes of the community. As defined by the legal-dictionary.com website, vigilantism is referred to as "Taking the law into one 's own hands and attempting to effect justice according to one 's own understanding of right and wrong; action taken by a voluntary association of persons who organize themselves for the purpose of protecting a common interest, such as liberty, property, or personal security..." (thefreedictionary.com). An example of vigilantism would be George Zimmerman, who decided to take law into his own hands by profiling someone as a criminal and shooting
It is estimated that nine out of ten women will be victims of sexual advances at work. The courts are making it easier to hold a company liable for any sexual harassment behavior that occurs within the workplace. The employer does not even need to know that the sexual harassment is taking place for an employee to file a suit and win. It is almost impossible to find a ?solution? or ?magic key? that will end the problem. There is no guarantee that anything will prevent sexual harassment from happening. There are only suggestions that might help in depleting the problem.
What NYC police department does in the 1980s, has a good effect of controlling crime rate. However, some of the rules that they used are against the state law. The NYC police department can be considered as a rule-breaker as well. According to Gladwell,“previous policy administration had been handcuffed by restrictions”(154, Gladwell). When the police department says “handcuffed by restrictions," they mean the limitation of state law or the constitution. In order to control the crime rate, they become both lawmakers and law protector. Under the excuse of controlling crime rate, the police department’s illegal operation attracts minimum attention. “If you pee on the street, you were going to jail”(154, Gladwell). Those over sentencing seems to work on lower the crime rate. However, it brings creates a bigger question — police department and government’s abusing power. The NYC police department’s operation shows that if needed, police department or government can act without the limited of legislation. Police have the right to decide who should be arrested instead of following the law. This is a setback for law and democracy. Iran is an extreme example of abusing power. The regime of Iran took the right from women using the name of religion. According to Nafisi, “When [Nafisi’s] students came into that room, they took off more than their scarves and robes”(281, Nafisi). When Nafisi writes, “more than their scarves and

I am almost certain that these women know that in other parts of the world, women have equal rights as men and treated equal. Even though I know not all women in Egypt are treated wrong or less than men, it is still not right that it is not a law that women are to be treated the same as men. It should be well known and a standard for women to be equal as men. They should not have to be accompanied by any male companion in any part of public property. It is sad to see that not all women in the world are treated equal but men
Have you ever wondered about the possibility that the law can be used to take away your rights and liberties? If so, wouldn’t it be just a matter of time until someone uses it to enforce their insular opinion? Muslims in European countries are baffled by the recent bans to wear the burqa or the “face veil” (i.e. France). The veil’s significance to the Muslim women community became a trigger for social discussions for terrorism, women’s rights and multiculturalism. President Sarkozy of France argued that the veil is not a religious symbol, instead, it’s another form of “enslavement” which France shouldn’t tolerate (Janmohamed). Arguments about market exploitation, misogyny, discrimination, and even secularism, all come to play in the clash between
The building of mutual trust between police agencies and the communities they serve are critical to maintaining public safety and effective policing. In past as well as recent history controversial uses of force among other types of incidents have damaged the relationships between police and their communities. The United States is a vast land of various races, ethnicities and religious backgrounds in which law enforcement must navigate daily. Many communication barriers still interfere in the building of relationships between various cultural groups and the law enforcement that serves them. While each group brings its own stack of beliefs and backgrounds, it is still important for law enforcement to become familiar with those they may encounter
From the ancient kings of Greece to our modern democracy, order has consistently been maintained by means of laws. To incentivize compliance and to reduce violence within a society, these laws are enforced through penalties according to the crimes committed. However, an individual is not only tasked to abide by these laws but also to preserve justice and condemn unjust laws that contradict the laws of a higher power. To address this conflict between moral and government-made laws, we are compelled to civil disobedience in the case of unjust laws.
Unfortunately, in the past few years, the very people who are supposed to be protecting our rights have disregarded this unconditional right. The government has the ‘monopoly of coercion’ in that they allow the protectors of a city carry weapons to intimidate wrongdoers. This can either be a great way to keep peace if the guardians seek peace, however, Hannah Arendt’s ideology of the banality of evil surely applies to a few guardians. Not everyone in a clean-cut uniform is a good guy. (Banality Of Evil Lecture). This responsibility has proven to be too much for some people to handle and the result is death of innocent people all based off of racial
It is the practice of being feminine or masculine (West and Zimmerman 1987) plays an important role in the Egyptian society. Men express their masculinity and show it off when they harass a woman. It is horrible how a community thinks that harassing women is a way of doing gender and expressing masculinity. If women will not take any actions against sexual harassment, then men will see this as acceptable to harass a woman anytime without being punished. Therefore, it will negatively affect women as individuals, but it also gives others, who see the abuse, the idea that it is acceptable to be treated like an
To conclude sexual harassment is a tremendously huge issue that should be taken seriously. The only solution for tackling this situation is to speak up when this situation happen to someone. Encourage the victim of sexual harassment to come forward and report to proper authority as soon as possible. The longer the victim waits, the less probability that it will be corrected. If there is someone out there that had been victim of harassment confront the person regarding the situation. Call for help and consult with local HR representative or appropriate authority. Do not become part of the statistics of such shameful acts. Get help! Finally, sexual harassment laws must be strengthened in order to fix what has become a serious problem today in the workplace in order to avoid having more victims.
