Is Being Lazy Okay? Often times in life a person encounters a task that he or she just has no interest in preforming. After the person realizes that they do not want to preform that specific task one of two things always happens. Either that person will do the task in spite of the desire not to. Alternatively, the person will procrastinate doing the task. A majority of the time procrastination is the wrong choice. So, if putting that daunting task is the wrong choice why do so many people around the world struggle with procrastination (Myself included)? The most obvious answer is they are lazy. For a majority of lazy people that idea of putting a task off until tomorrow is much to enticing to pass up. This is the start of a vicious cycle that …show more content…
(Mitchell Moffit, 2017). By using this quote Mitchell is attempting to use the rhetorical appeal of pathos he wants the lazy people to feel connected to the real world. Mitchell wants the people watching the video to see the pattern that plagues them and so many others. The meaning behind Mitchell’s quote is to make people question all the times they are put a specific task off until the next day only to not do that task. He wants them to think of all the time that they procrastinated. In order for people to stop being lazy Mitchell realizes that the cycle needs to stop. In order for the cycle to stop he want people to realize that if they do not have the motivation to do a task today, they want suddenly to find the motivation to do the task tomorrow. The motivation to do task will not suddenly appear, tomorrow will come and desire to do the task will not. So, the person should make a choice, the can do the task or they give up on that specific …show more content…
Here Mitchell is attempting to use the rhetorical appeal of logos. Mitchell wants the reader to come to the logical conclusion that not all tasks where created equal and that some tasks are not as important as others. Sometimes it is just easier to give up on a mundane task that does not mean a lot. However, giving up on a task is not necessarily a bad thing. In his video Mitchell implies that giving up on a task is not always because you cannot accomplish it. At some point a person has to come to the realization that it would be much easier to just give up on a task then struggle to get it done. When a person realizes that the task is not a priority it should be okay to give up on it, and once that happens the person should feel less guilty. If the task is important obviously the person should not give up on it. The uses of this quote was included to lead the reader to the conclusion that it is okay to be lazy sometime, but that giving up on a task is only an option if the task at hand is not a
In order to make these appeals to pathos, he presents laziness as a solution to some of man’s greatest desires. As a society, one of our major problems is happiness. Many people live their lives as sad drones stumbling through whatever life throws at them. Morley promises happiness to the “thoroughly and philosophically slothful.” He also assures the reader that the lazy man does not have the responsibilities of “the bustling man.” In more recent times stress has become a major problem for America; people adopt pills, books, candles, and even whole lifestyle changes trying to find a solution to the stress. Morley presents a resolution. One of man’s greatest desires is to be liked and respected. Morley comes out and says it very bluntly, “People respect laziness” (Morley 65). He later states that if one stays lazy through and through, that people will let you be. Too many times people have the tendency to get involved in others. When one presents themselves as a lazy man, the intruders will pass by and allow one to continue
Giving up shows a lack of self-respect and self-worth. Each time we push through adversity, we become stronger and more capable of dealing with the next adverse situation. Adversity in life is an inevitability and as such, pushing through those hardships build our soul’s armor and our ability to overcome. Never give up!
This essay discusses on Morrie explaining to Mitch that people live today senseless lives, he explained to Mitch stating, “So many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half-asleep, even when they're busy doing things they think are important. This is because they're chasing the wrong things. The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning" (Albom 43). This quotation from Morrie is a significant one. Morrie grasps what purpose means in humanity’s existence. Mitch’s perception of happiness was conflicting from Morrie’s. Morrie felt content when he was eating, dancing tango, and spending time with his family and friends. Mitch lets his job dominate his life. He
Steve Jobs is trying to say that you should live every day like it is your last. He knew his life had value to him and his family. He felt like life was worth living even though once in a while a hard choice would come along to toughen his life. Making a choice is very hard, but when making a choice it should be one that you will not regret later in life. Making choices is one of the hardest things in life so you must see all the good and all the bad to the outcome of your options. Live everyday like it is your last. Ebert says that life is a very precious thing. Hamlet wants to die, but him not knowing what is on the other side scares so he decides to live. Even though Ebert had to get surgery, he got through it and learned to still live his life with no regrets.
People want to be happy. No person is happier than the one with no responsibility. Christopher Morley writes his essay, “On Laziness,” to provide his opposition to this point of view and improves his point with the development of style.
I think that what the author was trying to imply in this passage was that in his personal experience, he has noticed that many people take many things for granted and that they don’t live their lives according to what they want and need to do. So much is wasted during one’s lifetime, and people just allow their lives to pass them by.
In chapter 1, it talks about the starting point of all achievements is desire. He writes that the desire or impulse to achieve something in life can be so great that any obstacles no matter how big or small can stop an individual from reaching the goal he has set up for himself. A person with burning desire, an obsession with success can go to any lengths until he succeeds. Failure does not bother him and...
First, he mentions the Germans and the events of WWI, saying “If the Germans had been as lazy. The world may have been spared a great deal.” Alluding to a tragic event and implying that it could have been prevented by adopting laziness instills a sense of guilt and uncertainty on the audience. It makes the reader question themselves; they begin to think “what if?” in other aspects of their life and wonder if any conflicts they had could’ve also been avoided if they had been indolent. Secondly, he appeals to the reader’s emotions by presenting benefits that entice the readers; he suggests a relief of responsibility when he alludes to a man that “[...]stopped answering letters, buying lunches for casual friends and visitors from out of town, he stopped lending money to old college pals and frittering his time away on all the useless minor matters that pester the good-natured” and he claims “People respect laziness”. Additionally, he claims “the man who is really, thoroughly, and philosophically slothful is the only thoroughly happy man.” He elicits an interested, hopeful, response from the audience; he promises happiness, respect, and relief of responsibility for nothing, or rather from doing
Could one argue that laziness is a favorable quality in humans? At first glance, Christopher Morley seems to do just that. Yet, upon further inspection, his argument is a satirical one whose purpose is to show the negative qualities of the very thing that he appears to be defending.
This message allows people to look deeply into their own actions and decisions. People simply are not polished by nature, work is involved in becoming a better person. Seekers of life objects that are possessions and desires will falter. The word show that life is a constant flow of change, people that hold onto “things” will be the ones in misery.
A. H. C. Chu and J. N. Choi, psychologists, distinguished two types of protracting, they discovered that active procrastination has attainable characteristics that lead to positive personal outcomes (Choi and Moran). These positive personal outcomes are a result of waiting at its finest. People with these adequate dilatory skills have probably learned from their deficient habits in the past that may help everyone know that the view of holding off can change. Writing this essay has changed my view on procrastination slightly, as I can see how it can be good for you. With my siblings, free time is limited. So taking time to do something more entertaining helps me take a break from stressful work. Then when I get back to it I feel more confident that I can focus and finish it. That’s an example of active procrastination for me. Frank Partnoy shows historical views on procrastination, in an article about his book, such as how “The Greeks and Romans generally regarded procrastination highly. The wisest leaders embraced procrastination and would basically sit around and think and not do anything unless they absolutely had to” (Gambino 2012). Those Romans and Greeks were able to enjoy their time of relaxation, using procrastination as a healthy tool rather than a bad habit. Even wise leaders used it! What an amazing realization that we get procrastination from
Hard work is challenging work. But why does it have to be challenging work? Because challenging work, when intelligently chosen, pays off. It’s the work that people of lesser character will avoid. And if you infer that I’m saying people who avoid challenging work have a character flaw, you’re right… and a serious one at that. If you avoid challenging work, you avoid doing what it takes to succeed. To keep your muscles strong or your mind sharp, you need to challenge them. To do only what’s easy will lead to physical and mental flabbiness and very mediocre results, followed by a great deal of time and effort spent justifying why such flabbiness is OK, instead of stepping up and taking on some real challenges.
People all procrastinate at one time or another. Procrastination is the practice of delaying work on important tasks in favor of less challenging ones. Chronic procrastinating hinders productivity and affects our state of mind by creating anxiety and stress (Reichelt). As deadlines approach, one often feels frustration and guilt for not starting on a task earlier. We often assume that projects won't take as long to finish as they really will, which often results in a mad scramble to finish the project in the twenty-four hours before the projects deadline. One of the biggest factors contributing to procrastination is the misconception that we need to be inspired or in the mood to work on the task at hand (Reichelt). However, the reality is that if you wait for the “right time” you will most likely wait for an indefinite amount of time and the task will never get completed.
About 4 out of every 10 people avoid facing difficult task and deliberately look for distractions, and unfortunately there are distractors everywhere. When there is a significant period between when you intended do a job and the time you actually did it, you procrastinated.
Many people go about their lives cycling through the routines of society. After experiencing the mundane routines of everyday life, some may succumb to lethargy and apathy without realizing it. These people often ask themselves why is it that their lives and the world around them do not seem to make any positive progression even after reaching adulthood. One answer is laziness. This personality trait can easily grow and become a negative impact if not kept in check. Its adverse effects, such as low moral integrity, mental stagnation, and intellectual degradation, on a person and the world around them is a topic that was written about by the writer, Ernest Smartt. In one of his essays, “The Negative Effects of Laziness”, Smartt goes through
