I chose to write on the Code of Ethics Plan for Vidant Health. The Code of Ethics Plan does reflect the values and purpose of the company. The company’s values are safety, excellence, compassion, teamwork, educations, and innovation. The ten page plan is titled “Ethics and Compliance Plan” and is broken down in numerous sections to include: purpose, mission, vision, key elements, program goals, standard of conduct, and responsibilities of all stakeholders. The Standard of Conduct is where I found information related to the values and purpose of the company. The components of the Code of Ethics was clear and did set definable expectations of employees and corporate conduct.
This plan has very explicit expectations for the following job roles: Board of Directors, Audit and Compliance Committee of the Board, Entity Board of Directors and Subsidiary Boards, Vidant Health CEO/Divisional Presidents, Corporate Compliance Steering Committee, Chief Audit and Compliance Officer, and Vidant Health Personnel (Vidant Health, 2015). Each section has listed bullet points of expectations for conduct. I was able to obtain the plan by accessing the company’s policy and procedure section located on the company intranet homepage. Every employee completes an annual requirement related to the “Code of Ethics Plan” and their responsibility. The authors of the journal article titled “Similarities in Business and IT Professional Ethics: The Need for and Development of A Comprehensive Code of Ethics”, describe a study completed in 1990 that concentrated more on the values postulated as being important to society, rather than on the levels of morality at which the values may be present (Payne, 2005). “The values identified in that article as being important were the values of integrity, justice, utility and competence.
At the highest level of morality, these values can be described in the following ways. First, integrity requires the decision-maker to adhere to the values of sincerity, honesty and candor. Justice entails the use of equality and fairness in decision-making. Competence is the value that forces workers to be competent, to maintain state of the art knowledge in their fields. Fourth and finally, the concept of utility dictates that the decision-maker will ‘‘actively seek information on the impact its decisions will have on all parties and it will weigh this information equally (Payne,
2005)” Code of Ethics should be written with the company’s profession and culture in mind. This plan should not and will not lay out specific rules and/or processes for every situation that may arise in the business. Spiro mentions the following about a company’s Code of Ethics: “It should address both the particular nuances of the company's industry as well as its broader goals for social responsibility and should be concrete enough to serve as a guide for employees in a quandary without laying out rules for every situation that could arise (Spiro, 2010).”

The main points of provision five of the ANA code of ethics are as follows: section 5.1, which is moral self-respect, suggests that nurses must care for themselves as much as they care for their patients. Nurses must do their best to maintain professional respect to themselves in regards of their competence and moral character. Section 5.2, which is professional growth and maintenance of competence, suggests that nurses must continue to self and peer evaluate themselves throughout their careers. Nurses must continue to learn current, up to date nursing practices through self, peer, and higher education. Section 5.3, which is wholeness of character, suggests that nurses must develop and take into consideration their own moral perspectives when practicing in their careers. Nurses are encouraged to express their moral viewpoint when it is helpful to the recovery of their patients, but must never express moral beliefs based on social stigmas that could negatively affect patient outcomes.

The major areas of my values and ethics can be summarized in six words: excellence, personal integrity, responsibility, ambition, accountability, and determination. Excellence guides me when setting targets in all my undertakings; I normally strive to achieve my best. Personal integrity and accountability enable me to make sound judgments to avoid engaging in actions that will hurt me and/or other people around me. Responsibility is important to me as it enables me to identify the part I need to play in my family, at the workplace, and in the community. Lastly, ambition and determination are applicable in providing me with the momentum needed to ensure that all my initiatives and tasks are done to completion.
An organization needs to adhere to ethics in order to effectively implement its mission, vision, and objectives in a way in which offers a solid foundation to management and their subordinates to properly develop and implement its strategies. By doing so, the organization as a whole is essentially subscribing to one commonality that directs all of the actions of the employees of the organization. Additionally, it assists in preventing such employees from divergence in regard to the proposed strategic guideline. Ethics additionally ensures that a strategic plan is developed in accordance to the interests of the appropriate stakeholders of the organization, both internal and external (Jin & Drozdenko, 2010). Likewise, corporate governance that stems from various regulatory parties makes it necessary for organizations to maintain a high degree of ethical standards; this is done by incorporating ethics within the organization’s strategic plan so as to foster a positive corporate image for the stakeholders and general public (Min-Dong Paul, 2009).
The nursing code of ethics has a very standard definition. It is the base on how nurses should guide themselves in conduct by making the right decision regarding ethical issues. According to the National Student Nurses Association “students of nursing have a responsibility to society in learning the academic theory and clinical skills needed to provide nursing care” (2003). In the clinical setting nurses have a lot of responsibilities while caring for an ill patient, they have the obligation to practice their profession with compassion, love, and respect the uniqueness of each patient, as nurses we are not supposed to deny care to a patient because of their economic status, their skin color, race, or the nature of health problems, we are here to help the people in need in particular those of susceptible populations. The NSNA states that the code of conduct is based on an understanding that to practice nursing as a student is an agreement that trust and honesty is depended on us by society. The announcement of the code provided direction for the nursing student in the personal development of an ethical foundation and not limited to the academic or clinical environment but can assist in the holistic development of a person. The values that impact my decisions include: accountability, truth, honor, spirituality, reliability, kindness, ambition, family and compassion just to name a few. My grandfather was a successful business man in the 1930’s through 1980’s. He was a firm believer that you are only as good as your word. He did business with a hand shake and a smile. Teaching his grandchildren that if a man’s word is of no value, neither is he. Furthermore, he taught us the importance of sticking with your fundamental beliefs and principals. The value that is non-negotiable in my life is integrity. I believe it is important to be ethical, honest, truthful, reliably and trustworthy in every aspect of life.
