NNN MN an upscale retailer is one of the latest to reveal being a victim of hackers. Many Customers were affected, not just the store itself. Customers cards were being use to make unauthorized purchases. This situation put the retailer at risk of losing current or potential customers. Many individuals would question its security measures potentially bringing the company’s overall goodwill down. Neiman Marcus hack affected everyone involved, also questions the idea of how secured we are when it comes to making credit card purchases and how communication plays a major role overall in the problem.
In todays world hacking is extending and for those that hack use it for economic benefits and to steal identities. With the recent hacking that compromised NNN MN around Christmas time the hackers were using malicious software to make credit card purchases once a customers used their cards in store. The company received signals of fraudulent activity months before but didn’t take actions necessary at the time since it wasn’t for sure. The retailer mentioned how many customers were affected, “More than 1.1 million customers were affected in the recent hack of high-end retailer Neiman Marcus, the company has finally revealed (Wired).” The number of people affected was high although it was just unauthorized credit card purchases without identity theft being compromised.
Another concern was that the retailer saw glitches in the system and actions were not taken immediately. According to the report “Among the revelations: The company apparently missed 60,000 security alerts about the hack (AJC).” The company responded with “Neiman Marcus’s system could have been set to automatically block the malware as soon as it detected anomalous activity...

Hacking is something that can hit anyone; hackers are just waiting for the right time and place. It is something to be concern and has affected a vast majority of people. The problem escalates to affect everyone in general from retailer, customers, and banks. All this hacking that has occurred within a year including the Target Hacking that was even bigger have established the ideology of just how secured is our information when we make purchases. Its only within a swipe that we can become victims of fraud. Retailers should take necessary steps to be more precautious and alert customers as soon as a problem arises. Failure to communicate within the company is essential just as it is to communicate customers of possible hacking.
The Minneapolis based Target Corporation announced in December that criminals forced their way into the company’s computer system. The data breach compromised 40 million credit and debit card accounts of customers who shopped during the holiday season between November 27 and December 15, 2013. The data captured was far broader than originally imagined as hackers gained access to 70 million customer’s personal information including names, home addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses. Additionally, expiration dates, debit-card PIN numbers, and the embedded code on the magnetic strip of the card were stolen.
Hacking into large companies or agencies to steal one’s card information has become simple. Lewis (2013) says that, “Hacking is incredibly easy; survey data consistently shows that 80 to 90 percent of successful breaches of corporate networks required only the most basic techniques“(p. 1). On November 27, 2013, Target’s security was breeched when forty million credit and debit cards were stolen. The breach lasted from November 27 to December 15, 2013.
Zappos has got a customer base of nearly twenty-four million people. In the period of January 2012, Zappos has undergone suffering due to data security breach which provided hackers private info of their customers. The securities breach shown customer names, their addresses, and phone numbers but did not provide the credit card information of customers. After Zappos got to know about the security breach, Zappos have sent bulk emails to all the customers informing them about the security breach and recommended that they change their login details on the website.
While it is wrong to stereotype hackers as evil people with malicious criminal intentions, they cannot be stereotyped as compassionate freedom fighters as the hackers like to see themselves. Hackers must also realize that the actions of criminals will always reflect poorly on the hacker community as a whole, until the hacker community tries to police itself, which will never happen. Their actions are by definition, criminal. They can suffer consequences, which include being criminally prosecuted and hated by the information security community.
About 15 million United States residents have their identities and information used fraudulently each year. Along the use of their identities, they also had a combined financial loss totaling up to almost $50 billion. Major companies such as Apple, Verizon, Target, Sony, and many more have been victims of consumer information hacking. In each of the cases, millions of consumers’ personal information has been breached. In the article “Home Depot 's 56 Million Card Breach Bigger Than Target 's” on September 18, 2014, 56 million cards were breached due to cyber attackers. Before the Home Depot attack, Target had 40 million cards breached. Company’s information is constantly being breached and the consumers’ are the ones who end up having to pay the price. If a company cannot protect the information it takes, then it should not collect the information.

In summary, as a customer representative, I have been in unpleasant situations that have required me to calm irate customers. I’ve discovered first hand, that an apology is worth a thousand words; from experience, I understand the impact of being a great listener, especially when dealing with irate customers. However, we know that providing great customer service doesn’t end with apologizing, or being a tentative listener. It is our duty as CSR’s to go above and beyond providing customer satisfaction. We must show our customers that we value and appreciate their services, by providing them with the value of service they will appreciate. In the process we will gain loyal customers, prevent customer defections and generate free advertising by word-of mouth.
