As my journey in Diboll High School is coming to an end, anew begins as I now begin to decide on a career. The career I have chosen to seek is a veterinary technician. During my job shadowing experience, I discovered the requirements I need to obtain in order to pursue this career, such as training and schooling, specific skills, and the day-to-day veterinary technician routine.
Vet techs assist veterinarians in the care of animals, assist in surgeries, and perform initial evaluation of the animals condition. Check vital signs, collect samples, give vaccinations, and clean and wrap wounds. So it would be in order that proper training and schooling be given to ensure animal healthcare. science is needed as well as a license or certification, but this varies by state. Other school classes and training that can help prepare someone for this career are math, science, animal anatomy, and obviously college. Possible schools where I can receive the qualifications and training needed for this career are Tyler Junior College, and the Veterinary Technician Institute of Houston. Another path to follow for this particular vocation is to begin working as a kennel worker and work up to be a vet tech. Above all, I believe the most important skill vital in this profession is to truly be passionate about animals.
In this career you will be around animals majority of the time, so I believe you should really look for their best interest at heart. Nevertheless, other important skills are communication, working well with others, technical skills, patience and physical stamina. For instance, during my job shadowing I observed that vet techs never have time to sit. The clinic is always busy. Animals are constantly brought in to have their vital signs checked, taking stool samples, or to be given a vaccination. Veterinary technicians are also responsible for examining blood work, and urination tests. So with that said, they were always busy at …show more content…
work. During my job shadowing, I had the privilege to survey the everyday duties of Mrs.
Julie, a veterinary technician at the animal clinic of my choice. Her first tasks of the day consisted of going to the back kennels to check up on some animals who stayed overnight at the clinic for ensured recovery. She administered their medication if they needed any as well as vaccines, and checked their vital signs. After that pet owners began to show up for their appointment. I was allowed to accompany Mrs. Julie and Dr. Penn the vet, in to the patient room and observe how a vet tech assists the vet in anything he might need. For example, Mrs. Julie had to hold a small yorkie so that Dr. Penn could give it a vaccine to help her with her urination problems. Throughout the day many dogs were brought to the back to have a checkup, have their vital signs checked, or have blood drawn. Furthermore, I watched how Mrs. Julie drew blood from a puppy, and went to the lab and inserted it into a the centrifuge, as well as run a heartworm test. Later in the day, Mrs. Julie had to go assist Dr. Penn in a surgery to remove two cancerous tumors from a dog. I observed how Mrs. Julie administered the anesthesia and monitored the dog to assure that it would be fine. She also helped to hand any medical instrument Dr Penn would need as well as move the lights to so that he could see effectively where he was making an incision. Around 12 o'clock, I was allowed to go to my lunch break. Afterword, it was later
in the afternoon and the clinic was not very occupied and I had permission to leave early due to the fact that the afternoons were usually the cleaning period of the day and nothing interesting was going to happen. Needless to say, I honestly enjoyed seeing the animals and seeing how the veterinary technicians worked hard to ensure the health of their patients. After my job shadowing experience I would still strongly consider this as my future career because I love animals and care about their well being. Moreover, that is the main focus of my choice of career. Something I discovered about this career that I did not know before this experience is how crucial vet techs are in the clinic. They are essentially nurses and without them, there would be chaos in every healthcare establishment. I gained knowledge of the essentials I need to acquire to be successful in this career being preparation and education, particular abilities, and the everyday-duties of a vet tech.
Veterinary technicians are like the techies of the theatre; the organization would be able to function without them, but it would be much harder. Things run a lot more smoothly with vet techs. There are multiple benefits that come with being a veterinary technician. These benefits include, but are not limited to, a high job outlook, great room for advancement, and only two years of schooling (depending on the route you take). Above all, the animals, who aren’t always able to help themselves, are being taken care of.
Cons are stress like when working long hours of the day, dealing with death of pets and distraught owners, exposure to allergens like pet dander, fur, along with radiation that have to deal with day-to-day basis. Combine them all with playing multiple roles throughout the day- receptionist, nurse, kennel attendant, technical assistant, janitor, and counselor. Unpredictable animals when animals feel threatened or alarmed and in unfamiliar area and especially when the animal is sick or in pain. Odd hours meaning depending on the employer his/her expectations may be expected to work on nights and or weekends. Weather may not be exempt either.Risk of getting injuries. Pros are pay that vet tech may not start off with twenty dollars but there room in there to grow. Room for advancement vet techs have the option to develop within their field which can translates to more money and opportunities. Flexibility vets have flexibility to work in a diverse set of environments. Opposite of a boring work environment the work environment is constantly changing every day. Hands on working with animals. Vet Tech has always been an option for me, helping animals is something that is very interesting. It was introduced in 1989, the AVMA officially adopted the name “Vet Tech.” In 1998, emergency vets debut on Animal Planet. And in 2008, student population grows from 500 to 700. There are about 17,000 people employed in the career field chosen. Some of the common trends of the job would be, working at Zoos, Aquariums, Boarding Kennels, and Wildlife sanctuaries. These jobs are usually found working in an animal clinic or hospitals and sometimes at farms because that is the “normal” areas for this occupation. In this career there are some general duties such as: Observe animals behavior and conditions, Provide nursing care, Bathe animals, Clip nails, groom animals hair, keep animals calm during exams or procedures. The more specific duties of the job would be to: take x-rays of animals and develop them, get utensils and prepare the animals for surgery, keep and record patient's history. Most of the clinics are open 24 hours. There is not anything that is unusual about the number of hours/nature of the job. (Bls.gov.vettech)
A vet tech can work in different work environments, such as animal hospitals, and private clinics. Working in various, environments create skillful tasks, which include: lab work, radiology, nursing care, surgery, x-rays, and assisting veterinarians in surgeries (Money Careers). One reason to become a Veterinary Tech is because they get to meet new animals and take care of them too. This career is very important because the well-being of animals is just as important as the well-being of humans(Vet Tech Guide). Animals need to be thought of humans just in a different shape. Loving, respecting, and comforting animals is just a small part in the career of a Veterinary Technician; being detail oriented, strong, and being educated are also very important qualities for a veterinary technician to have.
Surgical Technicians are needed tremendously for a surgical procedure to run smoothly. For surgeries, hospitals and offices are staffed with a trained medical team ready to take action when they are needed too. For as long as I can remember, my childhood dream has always been wanting to become a veterinarian. While other kids were outside having fun at the playground, I was at the library reading books and learning about the different animals. However, as I matured, I realized that being a veterinarian isn’t just about caring for and assisting injured animals. Being a veterinarian means having the ability to make quick decisions in stressful situations, showing complete dedication and passion to this profession, and being able to effectively communicate to pet owners.

During a person’s schooling, Veterinarians are expected to make decent grades and to show an interest for learning the sciences as well as technology. Besides having the education, a person must also indulge in some training both on the job and in shadowing experiences. Most if not all training will be completed in veterinarian school and will allow the veterinarian to start working right away. “According to the 2006-07 edition of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook, in 2004 annual sala...
In one way or another, I have been taking care of animals my entire life. Growing up, I was completely dedicated to animals, caring for what could be considered a mini zoo. Naturally, as a child, I was set on a career as a veterinarian. Like most children, I was naive about the veterinary profession, but I had plenty of people to warn me about its challenges. Albeit initially discouraged from becoming a veterinarian, my search for a meaningful career not only revived my spark for veterinary medicine but also gave me the maturity and experience necessary to succeed in it.

Many people in the world today suffer with problems such as anxiety and depression. As a way to treat these problems, those people should use animal-assisted therapy. Animal-assisted therapy (also known as pet therapy) is used in many hospitals and is growing more every day.
This experience demonstrated the dependence animals have on humans, the important part a veterinary nurse plays in society, as well as the ethics in animal welfare. During my 6 days in a kennel and cattery, I improved my efficiency as I was partially responsible for preparing certain wards, I believe this skill will help me during this course as nurses will need this trait when monitoring the health of multiple animals. I also learnt the value of excellent observation skills as the staff noticed small changes in the animals’ behaviour and catered for this.
I changed into my scrubs in the car and headed in for my first day. I was feeling a bit nervous because it was my first day and I’m a little shy, I also hadn’t eaten anything all day as I usually skip breakfast. As I went in the desk clerks greeted me and I told them I was here for my internship. One of the ladies walked me to the back of the clinic. As we walked through the clinic we passed a few tables with unconscious dogs lying on top of them. The desk clerk introduced me to one of the vet techs and told me I would be following her around today. The tech was working on an unconscious dog; she was spraying antiseptic on the dog’s abdomen in preparation for a surgery. She explained how my day was going to go and asked if I wanted to watch a surgery and I told her I would love to. She continued preparing the dog and when she finished she hauled the dog into her arms and carried it into the operating room. The tech introduced me to the vet that was preforming the surgery today and explained that I could sit or stand to watch, but to maintain some distance to not
