People spend their whole lives trying to gain knowledge in many different areas, while others stay focused on a single topic. Once vertical and horizontal thinking are combined people can gain more knowledge and understanding within several different topics. Sven Birkerts, the author of “The Owl Has Flown” explains in many ways how vertical and horizontal thinking are used in everyday life. Vertical thinking is a way in which a person goes more in depth to gain a better understanding of a certain topic. On the contrary, horizontal thinking is gaining more understanding on several different topics, but not as in depth as vertical thinking. There are other components to consider when trying to reach vertical and horizontal Engagement. Finding …show more content…
These environments are places that are specified for a person to help one gain vertical and horizontal thought. This is brought up in Birkerts essay when he says “because only where silence is possible can the vertical engagement take place.” (Page 35). Silence can mean something different for everyone. One person could reach vertical engagement better with background noise, but there are some people that prefer complete silence. It depends on the persons preferred environment as to where they can reach vertical engagement. People need to start taking life in and broadening their understanding by locating a place where they can experiment with horizontal and vertical thinking. The process of combining the two thinking methods can make a person more sensible about the world around them. Birkerts also states, “The only remaining Oases are churches (for those who still worship) and the office of therapists.” (Page 35). This quote displays what environments are ideal for Birkerts to reach a vertical engagement. This is very important because it shows that every individual has a different atmosphere that can help them vertically …show more content…
Practicing both of these engagements is vital for a better understanding of life. When horizontal and vertical thinking are one day combined in today’s society we will see a huge increase in growth. Once society has reached that level of growth people will gain more understanding of overall life. Incorporating these two engagements in everyday life creates knowledge and experience that can last a life time. Once this engagement has been reached one will become a more well-rounded thinker and wise
In this time, most teachers’ brains have been numbed from all of the talk about the thinking process and abstract thinking skills (Ravitch). Students need a lot of knowledge to be able to think critically as they are expected to (Ravitch). We stand on the shoulders of those before us, we did not restart as each generation comes up in the world as we wish it would (Ravitch). What we need to be learning is how to use our brain’s capacity to make generalizations so we can see past our own experiences
Onora O’Neill in her text “Environmental values, Anthropocentrism and Speciesism” discusses first different views that give humans an ethic through two utilitarian thinkers (Bentham and Mill), and then in her turn tries to come up with an ethic that protects the animals and the environment by also protecting humans.
Engagement in classroom discussions influences positive engagement in the workplace by allowing the individual to be more social and attentive when put in the environment, and to also makes the environment a great place to work. ...is a wide umbrella that cannot be acquired simply by creative and critical thinking. In certain cases like literature, only one of them is enough with the help of reasoning. It depends on the subjects whether creative or critical thinking leads to a influential or the amalgamation of the two like in the natural sciences. Knowledge can be generated from these two but only to a certain extent because none of these would work without reasoning or perception. Newton’s creativity required perception and to understand music emotions are to be understood. Therefore thinking is not the only way to acquiring knowledge.
As a student, there are so many ideas and concepts that surround us and can be overwhelming. The secret to investigating the ideas of others is to be inquisitive, yet believing. It is extremely difficult to balance these two contradicting ideas, but when one masters this skill they will be able to elaborate upon the ideas of others. Learning from other people is a great way to develop your own ideas as well.

This will help us understand other people better. It will make us more flexible. And perhaps we can all pick up tips from each other on how to be more effective.
...been generated over time through develops in technology, scientific advancements as well as advancements in math and the arts. Architecture and engineering incorporates math and the arts through designing buildings or constructing bridges using both creative and critical thinking. Another example is computer graphics pertaining to the incorporation of math and arts. This knowledge is generated over time through developments in technology from pushing new limits and expanding on old ideas. Both critical thinking and creative thinking are needed to generate new knowledge.
In daily lives, one needs to have different skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication, as well as social skills. I have always had the ability to open my mind to new ideas and experience different things. Then, I apply that to make personal decisions and create a desire to learn new things, improve skills and find challenges. Throughout the day, I think about a wide range of things. Thinking expands my knowledge, skills and aids in discovering how I can share my thoughts to others. Anything to do with mental growth is great to me. Things like science and math amaze and intrigue me, which is why I think I am so good at both of these subjects. Overall, I am a curious person, making myself believe that I achieve intellectual

Critical thinking a strong and powerful way to use the brain, it is used by millions everyday some without knowledge that they are even using it. Critical thinking according to Diane Halpern as " The use of those cognitive skills or strategies that increase the probability of a desirable outcome...thinking that is purposeful, reasoned and goal directed - the kind of thinking involved in solving problems, formulating inferences, calculating likelihoods, and making decisions when the thinker is using skills that are thoughtful and effective for the particular context and type of thinking task. Critical thinking is sometimes called directed thinking because it focuses on a desired outcome." Halpern (1996).
