Every specie of animal have their own way of communication. There are ways to communicate without the use of actual words. The use of nonverbal communicators is important to understand if you want to get your message across because ninety three percent of communication is nonverbal communication. Nonverbal communication has three main categories: visual, auditory, and invisible (book). Visual communication consists of body language, facial expressions/eye contact, and gestures. The auditory communication system includes how we use and interpret volume, tone of voice, and silence. The invisible communication system covers physical space and time. Every person and every culture uses time differently. In America, people are monochronic, meaning they run on time. People are expected to be punctual because that shows they are responsible. If someone is late for a meeting or a prearranged time, they are thought to be inconsiderate or unreliable. But in other cultures, such as Mexico, people are polychronic, meaning that time is irrelevant to them. They have a very loose and flexible schedule. The essence of time could also be interpreted as how much a person is valued. People who think they are important do not think they should wait because their time is more valuable than others. It is also important to note that time in relationships shows that the people in that relationship are valued. But when it comes to holding a conversation through email or text messages, people do not want to have to wait for a response. In every society nonverbal communication is one of the most powerful tools that a person can use to interpret the message that is being delivered. Even though verbal communication is fairly straightforward, nonverbal communication allows others to sense the true emotions of the person that is expressing them. For example even though a person may say that they are not irritated, their usage of voice may display otherwise. Nonverbal communication not only reveals hidden messages, but it also complements, substitutes, and exaggerates verbal communication.
When we think of communication, we tend to think of speech, but there is a lot more to it than verbal communication. Gesturing, tone of voice and facial expressions are all parts of communication that are not verbal. We may not even always realize how much of communication is non-verbal, because we normally don’t think about it that way. It is amazing to see how much nonverbal communication plays such a large role in simple day to day activities. We do most without being conscious of it, as it is second nature to us. We share our thoughts and feelings with face expressions, and often feel the need to support our words with gestures to further convey our point we are trying to make.
