The love of A Mother There are many beautiful and innovative works of art from the eighteenth- century. However, the “Venus Consoling Love” a painting of the Rocco style by Francois Boucher is quite relative and stood out to me because I believe it depicts the story of Venus the goddess of love and her beautiful winged children. This speaks to my life because I am a mother with three children. You can clearly see how Venus is disciplining Cupid by disarming him of his arrows, while the other two winged creatures are looking rather delighted by this. Cupid was always misbehaving. Cupid was mettlesome, carefree, and loved using his arrows, often in a troublesome and sometimes damaging ways. This portrait speaks to me so much because it reminds
me of my life with my children. Venus is the goddess of love and her son Cupid believes it is his responsibility to spread his mother’s love. In this painting, it is interesting that Cupid is positioned closest to Venus and has her full attention. This is generally the way it is with the mischievous child. Like my life, my attention is somewhat honed in on my “wild child” with my older child watching with a smirk on his face, amused by the whole situation. As shown in the painting, while Venus is disciplining her son Cupid, her other children are laughing at this situation. Although Venus is taking away cupids arrows she is doing it in such a loving and comforting way. I believe this is why the painting is called “Venus Consoling Love.” This painting is delightfully sensual and enticing while also being quite innocent. “With the idyllic Venus Consoling Love, Boucher flattered his patron by portraying her as the goddess of love. Venus is surrounded by attentive doves and cupids, the nubile Venus relaxes on a bed of sumptuous rose and blue satin robes nestled in a bower of leafy trees and windswept grasses. Boucher delighted in sensuous contrasts of flesh, fabric, feathers and flowers.” (Fiero 179) (348)
In Under a Cruel Star, Heda Margolious Kovaly details the attractiveness and terror of Communism brought to Czechoslovakia following WWII. Kovaly’s accounts of how communism impacted Czechoslovakia are fascinating because they are accounts of a woman who was skeptical, but also seemed hopeful for communism’s success. Kovaly was not entirely pro-communism, nor was she entirely anti-communism during the Party’s takeover. Vanitas paintings are two dimensional compositions of symbolic content and iconography. The various objects used in the design of these paintings symbolize the brevity of life, the vanity of wealth and beauty, and the inescapable reality of death. This form of art was developed out of Northern Europe in the mid-16th century and through the 17th century. The word “vanitas” is Latin for “vanity.” Vanitas paintings are designed to remind its viewers of the verse in the Biblical book of Ecclesiastes that says all earthly things are “vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” Artists who painted vanitas wanted their viewers to remember that the wealth, beauty, and achievements that people desire and obtain will pass away and that death is a sure thing. Mortality is the message present in each vanitas painting and each artist expresses this meaning individually with the use of iconography, color, and various techniques.

The Ladies Paradise by Émile Zola Zola's portrayal of men and their attitudes towards women may be the relation between that of, the controller and the controlled. One is made to believe that it is the men who control the women, and although this is the case in most instances of the Ladies Paradise, there are two people who ensue in resisting against all odds, at being run over by the machine that captivated and engulfed the late nineteenth century bourgeois household unit. They are the elegant Mademoiselle Boudu and the brushy eye-bowed Monsieur Bourras. One of the main characters, Monsieur Mouret ("governor" of the Ladies Paradise), spectacularly uses the lower classes as a tool to increase the perception of happenings in his store. So as to invoke middle class ladies of France not only to enter his palatial trap set for the nineteenth century consumer, but as well to create their desire of acquiring greater material possessions than they may actually need.
Throughout the novel "Little Altars Everywhere", written by Rebecca wells, there are changes between the relationships of its characters. Viviane, the mother of Siddalee, Baylor and Little Shep, is one of the main characters, and most of the changes revolve around her. Throughout the novel, it is portrayed that Viviane has a closer relationship with her eldest daughter, Siddalee. Viviane has always been a distant mother, who is more worried with social things such as her "Yaya sisterhood", than developing a close relationship between her and her family. Viviane is not only distant with her children, but she does not have a solid relationship with her husband, Big Shep.
A Love Affair in The Storm by Kate Chopin Kate Chopin's "The Storm" is a short story about a brief love affair that takes place during a storm that has separated Calixta from her husband and son. The title "The Storm" is an obvious reference to the storm outside, but more importantly to the love affair that takes place. The title refers to nature, which is symbolically used again and again in the story. Chopin uses words like "somber clouds", "threatening roar", and "sinister intentions" to describe the approaching storm. Later in the story those same words in reference to the storm outside, will also be represented symbolically to the storm brewing inside with the love affair.
Raphael’s painting is arranged with the Madonna in the middle and the two infants placed in her arms and at her feet, allowing for them to capture the viewer’s attention as well. There is no one focal character, as each is placed to draw attention to all three of the characters as a whole, something that is not seen in Titian’s Venus of Urbino. In Titian’s, Venus of Urbino, Venus is clearly intended to be the main focal point, whereas the two other characters in the background are meant to support but not overpower Venus herself. The differentiation between these two character placements in each painting is extremely important when it comes to determining the overall meaning and understanding what the artist was trying to portray with their works of
Reunion, by John Cheever, is a story told through the eyes of a young boy, Charlie, who is recalling a meeting with his father who he hasn’t seen for more than three years. It is set in New York where Charlie’s father lives. He meets up with his father during a stop over between trains.

This is the conflict that Paul faces from the moment he falls in love with Agnes. His devotion to the church and ultimately God are thrown into the cross hairs with the only possible outcome being one of agonizing humiliation. Grazia Deledda’s The Mother presents the classic dilemma of having to choose between what is morally right and being true to one’s own heart. Paul’s inability to choose one over the other consumes his life and everyone in it.
The novel, Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology and Less From Each Other (2011) written by Sherry Turkle, presents many controversial views, and demonstrating numerous examples of how technology is replacing complex pieces and relationships in our life. The book is slightly divided into two parts with the first focused on social robots and their relationships with people. The second half is much different, focusing on the online world and it’s presence in society. Overall, Turkle makes many personally agreeable and disagreeable points in the book that bring it together as a whole.
Simone de Beauvoir, the author of the novel The Second Sex, was a writer and a philosopher as well as a political activist and feminist. She was born in 1908 in Paris, France to an upper-middle class family. Although as a child Beauvoir was extremely religious, mostly due to training from her mother as well as from her education, at the age of fourteen she decided that there was no God, and remained an atheist until she died. While attending her postgraduate school she met Jean Paul Sartre who encouraged her to write a book. In 1949 she wrote her most popular book, The Second Sex. This book would become a powerful guide for modern feminism. Before writing this book de Beauvoir did not believe herself to be a feminist. Originally she believed that “women were largely responsible for much of their own situation”. Eventually her views changed and she began to believe that people were in fact products of their upbringing. Simone de Beauvoir died in Paris in 1986 at the age of 78.
The Birth of Venus is a beautiful Renaissance canvas masterpiece created by Sandro Botticello. The picture illustrates the birth of Venus in a very mystical way. Venus has emerged from sea on a shell which is being driven to shore by flying wind-gods. She is surrounded by beautiful roses which are painted in a truly remarkable color. As she is about to step to land, one of the Hours hands her a purple cloak. The back drop includes the sea and a forest. The overall effect of this painting are almost overwhelming, color and beauty meet the eye in every angle.

Venus, the Goddess of beauty and the mother of Cupid, was offended when people believed in a rumour that Psyche, the most beautiful of the three daughters of the king and queen, is Venus’s daughter from a union with a mortal. She ordered Cupid to revenge in her behalf. However, Cupid, fell in love with Psyche.
