For centuries, the number of smokers in the United States has been consistently decreasing. However, a recently popularized trend among teens has reason to cause alarm in families and neighborhoods across the nation.
Living in a modern technological era, the idea of trends is nothing new. A viral trend such as a new dance move or a funny interview quote can be circulated throughout social media platforms in minutes, and can be seen by millions in mere hours. However, the largest, and most vulnerable type of consumers are underage kids, and they are continuing to have an increased role online. Through online sharing, an electronic cigarette known as a JUUL became instantly popular among middle schools, high schools, and even colleges across the nation. The product is very addictive, containing over 5% nicotine, but most kids who use the device initially are not aware of the dangerous health risks. Vaping e-liquids, a solution of propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, flavors and nicotine is a market with many unknown effects. Furthermore, most of the young people who use the product are unaware of the potentially dangerous consequences. People

They were certainly not created to be purchased by a majority of students who have yet to fully develop mentally. However, when compared to cigarettes, JUULs are not even close to as bad for to your body. There may be no need to overreact to this JUULing practice, however, it’s clear that anything involving vaping when started young can be a introductory platform to smoking real cigarettes. If using a JUUL becomes so much of habit for a student that they have to use it in the classroom, then we can see the addiction has gone too far. Using an electronic cigarette like a JUUL in a classroom is feasible due to the lack of smoke, which is part of the reason for its sudden popularity amongst
Advice on the Risks of Nicotine Replacement Therapies for Smoking Cessation (e-cigarettes gum and patches) Are e-cigarettes better than other conventional therapies?
Tobacco companies have relied on the media to lure children. They quickly realized that ‘the company that dominates is that which most effectively targets young”(Imperial Tobacco document.) To counteract the idea of disease and other negative aspects of tobacco, the industry used imagery in the media such as natural settings and healthy actors doing active things. This helps them to insinuate that smoking leads to success, romance, sophistication and other advancements in their lifestyle, which was easily imprinted in the minds of children. A document found among Imperial tobacco files described their priority: “…having our imagery reach those non-reading young people who frequent malls should be our chief goal.”(1.170) Unaware of how important the under 18 market was to the industry, the government could only attempt to lengthen the distance between schools and billboards because they’re ineffective attempts were ignored by the large corporations. With many billboards concentrated in small areas it put the idea in children’s minds that smoking was socially acceptable and that t...
They might not contain as many harmful chemicals in actual cigarettes, but there are still some nasty kinds of health and danger risks that lure in vapes. It might be still early in the game for vapes, but as time goes on, people find out more and more that vapes are really dangerous for humans. As said in previous paragraphs, things like this can still be worked and improved on to make vapes more safe for users at all times. Though vape companies say they are “safe”, the outcome of vaping can be really bad, and at the end of the day maybe staying away from vapes is safer than anything
While todays major tobacco producers deny that they market to the youth. However, we still see them subliminally targeting children through magazine advertisements, store posters, and Internet ads. In addition, they continue to use product placement strategies in mov...
Smoking is a lifestyle, a habit, and a trend. Smoking has become a social activity among teens, connecting them through the craving of a smoke. Smoking is seen as seductive and cool in the media and movies which influences teenagers to smoke even more. The World Health Organization has stated that “Tobacco kills around 6 million people each year. More than 5 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while more than 600,000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.” As of April 2016, only 7% of teenagers in the U.S. smoke, but it is said that tobacco use will kill 8 million people annually by 2030. 99% of adult smokers start in their years as teenagers. Smoking is an epidemic that has taken control of people’s lives since 1881 and the media since the early 1900s. Smoking currently kills about 440,000 people a year in the U.S. I feel that it is an issue because it is the #1 most preventable way to die, but people still continue to smoke because of how it looks and how they are perceived as a person if they do. The fact that people become addicted to a trend that will attribute to their death for the sake of being thought of as cooler, is a problem that needs to be addressed.
Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are battery operated heating devices that work by turning nicotine into vapor that is inhaled to emulate smoking tobacco but without the harsh toxic chemicals attributed with smoking cigarettes. The liquid nicotine substance inserted in the e-cigarettes is primarily a solution of water, propylene glycol, glycerin, and small amounts of flavoring, available with or without nicotine that is vaporized by an internal heater (Popova 924). Furthermore, the amount of nicotine can be adjusted from nicotine free to extra strength. This allows users to control their amount of nicotine with the most promising option to be nicotine free or detached from the tobacco imitating device. E-cigarettes can be practically taken anywhere. Most are designed to resemble the typical cigarette and others may appear in a pen-like shape. Not to mention, the cost of e-cigarettes are relatively low compared to buying tobacco products. Given these points, e-cigarettes is a better solution to the discontinuance of smoking tobacco because it does not contain toxic chemicals associated with the smoke from cigarettes, it is a more affordable, and permits its users to control their nicotine intake to eventually curb the nicotine
Discussion Alternatives to smoking Effects of an e-cigarette E-cigarettes, or rather the liquid that is vapourised, have been found to contain two TSNA’s (tobacco-specific nitrosamines). These TSNA’s, Nicotine-derived nitrosamine ketone and N-Nitrosonornicotine, are proven as two of the most carcinogenic of the TSNA’s. This shows that despite being advertised as a more ‘clean’ alternative to cigarettes, they contain some of the same substances that make smoking the danger that it is today. E-cigarettes also contain nicotine. Furthermore, many e-cigarettes have been tested for their contents, with great variation between the levels of nicotine within the e-juice.
One of the newest trends in America is an alternative to smoking called “Vaping”. There are many advocacy groups that are currently petitioning and fighting legislature that would make this new trend illegal. Many claims have been made stating that vaping is more dangerous than smoking traditional big brand tobacco. There are also arguments that there have not been enough studies to prove that vaping is less harmful than conventional smoking methods, which is not the case however. Vaping has been around since the early 1960s and has proven to be healthier than its tobacco cousin, the cigarette. Currently the United States Government is trying to pass a law that would ban the production, distribution, and sale of many vape products. This ban would make it so the big brand tobacco companies would once again be the number one source for nicotine. I strongly believe that vaping is a safe alternative method to smoking that will reduce many medical risks and diseases associated
In recent years, smoking has started to take over the lives of many teenagers. The number of teenagers smoking has increased dramatically in the last several years. This is a major problem because smoking can lead to sickness and major diseases that can lead to death. Teens tend to participate in this while out of the presence of an adult figure. Although teens should not be smoking in the first place, an adult figure should be around to help insure that their children are doing the right things, even when they are behind sealed doors with their peers. Teenagers as they mature become a model for younger children and when they set the example of smoking can ruin their respectable image to the children that look up to them.
Everyone knows that cigarettes are horrible for your health and increase your risks of cancer. Not too long ago there was a big advertisement for e-cigarettes also known as vaping. It was advertised to be a healthier alternative and comparable to a nicotine patch to help you quit smoking. Many people began to question this new form of smoking and if it was really a safer alternative. Even though vaping is a safer alternative than smoking, vaping is not harmless because you are still getting nicotine, inhaling poison and risking a weaker immune system.
Since the discovery of vaping, in the year 1963, and its reinvention in the year 2007, there seem to always be something new in the industry. Looking closely, you will realize that the vaping devices we had last years are different from the one we have today, in one way or the other. Manufacturers of vaping devices and accessories don’t seem to rest. They are always looking for innovative ways to improve vaping experiences and enable as many people quit smoking by offering satisfying vaping sessions. In order to achieve this, technology has played a very big role.
One of the biggest problems with society today is children and young adults are turning to electronic cigarettes for a source to nicotine. It is understood that some people might think that electronic cigarettes are better for people but here is why they are not. Electronic cigarettes have the same consequences as normal cigarettes with very few differences, such as in electronic cigarettes there is no tobacco and there is no carbon monoxide. Some might not know what is really in electronic cigarettes. Many people don’t know that there are over seven thousand chemicals and cartridges in these devices. Smoking electronic cigarettes has the same effects as normal cigarettes; they as well have been known to cause cancer and other diseases. Here is why electronic cigarettes are just as bad for the human body as
Teen Smoking Teen smoking. Those two words mean a lot of things to a lot of different people. To some it means nothing. They are just two meaningless words found under T and S in the dictionary. To others it is as if these words symbolize some sort of treason or crime against society. Yet to others it is just another stereotype to be placed under. And to some it is a salvation. An escape. Unfortunately I am writing this paper so you will get my positions on teen smoking rather than other peoples. Teen smoking gathers a lot of emotions when I think about it. It makes me very angry sometimes. My first draft of this was good but I saw myself getting angry and lashing out on everyone, so I revised it. But enough of that, I find teen smoking to be a very controversial subject. To be completely honest with you I am smoking right now as I am writing this. Obviously I am a smoker. I am 17 years old and I am a smoker. In the late 1990’s, the statistics showed that approximately 25% of teens smoke. That’s one out of every four teenagers. High school is a tough time for teens. These years are critical to a teens future. This explains why a vast majority of smokers start at 16 years or younger with the most common age being 14 years old(freshman). It has also been proven also that teens who score lower in school smoke more than higher scoring students do. It seems that everyone smokes in our school. Our school is overrun with smokers. It is right now at least 50% smokers and 65% if you count the people who will smoke before their high school career is up. We practically encourage it. I mean Fireman’s Field practically condones teen smoking. Teen smoking is defiantly a problem in our school, as well as schools all over the United States. I feel that teen smoking is a huge problem. I feel that too many teenagers smoke cigarettes. It is something that needs to get dealt with. But before I get into that I should probably start with the causes of teen smoking. There are several factors that start teens on smoking cigarettes. There has to be considering that over 1 million new teenagers will start smoking annually. The most common is peer pressure.
Today, there has been an increase in the amount of teenagers who smoke half a pack a day of cigarettes. The number of seniors in high school who have tried cigarettes has decreased over the years, but the number of those who smoke occasionally or half a pack or more a day, has increased. There are many factors as to why teenagers smoke including advertising and teen behavior. There are also a few ways we can stop teenagers from wanting to smoke. Therefore, we need to make teens aware that smoking is not good for you and it is not cool and we need to figure out why teens think it is cool. We need to find out why teens smoke and how we can make the
A study from Hatsukami and colleagues (2010) about reducing the levels of nicotine in tobacco, in order to help prevent addiction and help wean off the habit brought a different alternative to quit tobacco. A new technology has arrived and it has been beneficial by weaning off smokers from nicotine and it is called the electronic cigarette. According to Stifferlin (2014), “researchers found that based on the evidence, e-cigs are much less harmful to smokers and bystanders compared to conventional cigarettes” and researchers also found “that e-cigs can help some users cut down on their use of regular cigarettes and even quit.” Due to the fact that e-cigs are fairly new, researchers are still unaware the health issues it may bring. Currently e-cigs are better than a traditional cigarette because of the fewer toxins it
